I'd just like to show my support for this plea. Level 42 were never really ones to mix up the set list and I'm sure Mark will be performing the same set every night, especially as there will be a lot of sequencing and backing tapes being used in the set. It would be nice to be surprised (hopefully pleasantly) by hearing it as it is played and not by seeing it on the digest. I'm just hoping for Love Meeting Love, Kansas City Milkman and an instrumental or 2. That's not much to ask is it? Yes, the MK model is 34". I believe the SC model is 31". However, Alembic will make any bass in their catalogue any scale-length you want (and I don't think they charge extra for it, as every Alembic is custom to begin with). > What a dream to play. I haven't yet had the pleasure of trying the Mark King model, but plan to do so at the Bass Centre on this trip. I did, however, recently try my first Lakland, a Deluxe 4, and everything I've read about the broken-in feel of the neck is true. It was incredible - I can't believe I enjoyed a bolt-on bass so much. I may have to get one. > Collecting basses is becoming an addiction. I can't afford this. Thanks for the help. Audiophile imports lists it on their web site, however a few years ago somebody had warned us that they'd ordered a copy of the Guaranteed Live video and received a dubbed copy that was in Mono. They're charging around $40 for this as I recall, so you might want to make sure it's an original :) > You mentioned a Live Wembley Video with Gary on drums. I have Wembley > Live with Phil and "Fait Accompli" with Gary. Are there other live > videos that I am missing? Actually, that Live at Wembley is a CD, not a video. Gary is on the Guaranteed Live video however (duh, of course he is). > I think the "Boon" in those videos is an imposter!!!!! I'd say the real evidence is the fact that this "imposter" actually cracks a smile during the Lessons in Love video. :) Favorite drum track? Hands down, Hours by the Window. Here in the states we called it "Blue Eyed Soul" It started about the time of Hall and Oats cross-over to R&B charts with "I can't go for that" I may have the title wrong but The Climax Blues Band's "Couldn't see the light"??? was for a long time believed to be a song by the Brothers Johnson. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Bass Talk From: "Takeo & Tomoko Sonoi" Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 11:36:45 -0600 Greg wrote: >I had the thrill this weekend of playing a Stanley Clarke edition Alembic. >I had not known that he played a shorter scale bass than standard. >I guess the Mark King version is 34 inch scale, anybody know? Yeah, he plays short scale bass. Mark King had several Alembic basses. The famous two Alembics he uses on stage are both medium scale....e.g. 32 in....he sold his long scale Alembics when he sold his stuff in '97. You can order from Alembic however you want it. When I got mine in '96, I ordered with a lot of options.. They are dream to play...I agree. But I had to sell mine last year for school. Oh well, I still have 2 Status, including the one MK played on Guaranteed live. Takeo. ------------------------------ Subject: Wally Badarou/Gary Husband/Nik Kershaw/MK gigs/drums From: Bill Burnett Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 00:55:40 +0000 Hello all I introduced myself a couple of weeks ago (bass player in sphere etc), thanks to those who replied to my enquiries - I am writing to all now. I had no idea that so much discussion would be posted everyday (I am new on the net!!). so bear with me while I backtrack a little. A) RE: WALLY BADAROU VIDEO it is likely that the track in question is Chief Inspector, however one other single has been released by wally, Hi-Life. In either case, both tracks can be found on the album Echoes (island records 1984 cat no.CID104). I checked Islands web site & all that appears to be currently in print is his second album Words Of A Mountain (anyone who doesn't own this magnificent work should take themselves outside and have words immediatly), but if it is Chief Inspector, you may still find assorted 12 inches around, as this has been re-released at least 3 times to my knowledge. B) RE: GARY HUSBAND VIDEO Yes it is indeed published by Warner Bros. Full title Gary Husband - Interplay & Improvisation on the drums. as I live in England. I have no idea where to order it in the states. but if anyone requires a european format version it is distributed by I.M.P. England 0181 551 6131. this is a must for L42 completests. it has funk improvisations with Mark King. group performances & improv with Allan Holdsworth. And Husbands own group featuring Steve Topping (the guitarist who briefly replaced Boon before Alan Murphy). as well as stuff with Gary Moore, Jack Bruce, & Mick Hutton (former bassist with Bill Brufords Earthworks!!!). Gary is an extrodinary musician, I saw him last year in a tiny club in north London playing mainstream jazz with about 2 drums & only brushes!!, then a few months ago playing keyboards in Billy Cobhams Band!! Bastard. C) NIK KERSHAW seeing Nik Kershaw list L42 as one of his favorite bands, comes as no suprise to me. I Don't Know if Kershaw is Known in the states, but to me, like L42 he represents the epitome of great 80's pop, marrying catchy, jazzy tunes to highly inventive, suprisingly complex arrangements - If you've never come across him, check out his classic album The Riddle - and try the track Easy, on which Mark King plays, and features the kind of bouncy groove & breezy chorus, that wouldn't sound out of place next to Micro Kid. - Nik has been out of things for nearly a decade now (something to do with his lyrics containing scathing attacks on corporate music industry mentality!!) but is currently attempting a comeback and I have seen him thrice at london jazz clubs with a blinding band in the last few months, if you get a chance, check him out live. D) MARK KING GIGS I can see from the postings that many U.S. fans are coming over for the Shepherds Bush Empire gig on the 30th. Did you know that he is playing on Thursday 28th at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon, which, in south London is only about 10 miles from the Shephards Bush gig. if anyone fancies this gig as well, then a would be happy to provide directions, booking info etc & see you there. I'll be the one with the sore thumb. E) FAVORITE DRUMMING TRACKS Phil: 43: for percussion & textures Almost There: for energy & perfect fills The Machine Stops: for that wonderful cycling high hat groove (the same one that turns up in the latter stages of hot water live on A Physical Presence) Children Say: fantastic sense of space, amd that perfect push on the snare every 4th chorus bar Sleepwalkers: for that double high hat pedling trick (I wonder if Phil has ever tried rally driving) Gary: Over There: great use of triplet percussive elements (particularly on the live version!) If You Were Mine: you try miming this while driving, I've scared a lot of people with this track Mark: There Is A Dog: it may not be authentically latin, but for explosive enthusiasm, this has no peers Manu: I know he isn't really level 42, but check out Desire, Jung, & most of all Judgement Day on Changes (one of the most underrated albums anywhere, ever) Manu Katche is god, if Arthur C Clark is right. one day we will all evolve into him. Thanks for your time P.S. does anyone, anywhere, know what Mike Lindup is doing now???. for when you sing you're song I am forever yours love - Bill -- Bill Burnett ------------------------------ Subject: Drum stuff From: "Adam Hankinson" Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 02:40:13 -0000 >Come on Adz, where is your two pence (that is your currency >now, isn't it) on this? Yep, My opinion on drummers etc (probally only worth 2 pence) :-) Ok, Here's the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Phil Gould is god. As a Bass player, I look for tight funky grooves. Something that Mark can put his magic to. So Basically, anything up to and including True Colours. Highlights including Heathrow, Kansas City Milkman, 88, Why are you leaving?, 42, too many to list! In the the world machine and after era's. It is difficuilt to decide what is played and what is programmed. But "Lying still" blows me away! Gary Husband is without doubt a huge talent but, and it pains me to do this, I have to disagree with some friends here. If you were mine. That so called drum solo at the end..... hmm it kills the song. Yes his patterns are very complicated and clever but lacks the dynamic quality. (a personal view!) Gavin Harrison. Now then!!! ;-) this guy (kid) is the dogs thingies. When I saw him playing such funky grooves one handed whilst playing the percussion with his right hand, I thought "oh yeah, what a poser!" But after watching him carefully, and I do admit this. I watched him more than Kingy at the last gig at the RAH! I was amazed. Try and get hold of his solo album its a strange listen but very interesting. Ok, I play drums.... but I only play pitty patty stuff with a German umpah band ( http://welcome.to/jagermeisters ) There are a lot of good drummers out there on the digest and I am enjoying reading their comments on this. Anyone who was at the Britfest will be witness that Im am no drummer. But do you guy's remember me pulling of that fill in Guaranteed with morgan?? ha ha My drumming highlight!! I took a bow! :-) Adz P.S. Manu Katche. Another top player (Mike Lindup) I really want to get hold of "Dyzrythmia" anyone know how? ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Best Drum Tracks From: Mark Perrella Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 23:38:43 -0500 Here are my top three: 1. If You Were Mine: A highly energetic and powerful track that shows off Gary's technical chops. 2. Children Say: Lolita has it straight on this one regarding Phil... "Especially the subtlety of Children Say: how he approaches the beat." 3. Forever Now: Phil has it all on this track.... a solid groove with a heavy hook that makes this song one of my all time favorites. I think that Mark played a little fretless bass on the "Guaranteed" album, but I forgot what one can really sound like until I pulled out my old Gary Numan, "I Assassin" CD on which Pino Pallidino forces amazing sounds out of his Music Man Stingray fretless.
