Talking as I did of Boon seems equivalent to criticizing Bill Clinton at the democratic national convention or saying Hitler was not that bad at a bar-mitzvah. Hey, I hate boon and that is allowed. You CAN love Level 42 and hate boon you know. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Oi Gaffa!! From: "Spencer, Paul" Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 12:37:42 +0100 (British Summer Time) Morning all, >First: can someone tell me more about the BASS PICK / THUMB PLECTRUM Mark used / uses. Did he always use one? I looked around, but I can't find one for myself. Is it to ease the battering on your thumb, or to produce a better string slapping sound, or both? And what exactly does it look like, is it plastic or metal?< I believe you are referring to the black (sometimes white) thing worn on Mark's thumb? If so, this is made from the musicians universal tool, nothing more than good ol' gaffa tape! It is worn purely to protect ones thumb from the constant battering it gets from bouncing off the strings. Apparently the sound produced from a taped thumb is not as good as a naked thumb, but if you still want some skin left...! (check out Carl's page - the excerpt from the Expohal where he explains this and plays some neat bass!) >Second: Bass amps. I use an old makeshift amp with speakers which works fine but is not very loud. I am considering using an old stereo FM amplifier with speakers. I have heard that you cannot do that and it will damage the stereo amp (i.e. you can ONLY use a BASS amp for a bass guitar). I have also heard, however, that you can do that provided you keep the volume very low, and the stereo amp will not be harmed. Can someone maybe tell me a bit more about this?< Whilst I am not a technical buff, the way I understand this is that it wouldn't really be suitable because the impedance (quoted in ohms) for the input wouldn't match, so if the level was too high it would literally blow your amp. My advice, buy a combo amp with a DI output. (also if buying a bass amp, always get one with more output than you need, it gives good headroom) On the Boon thingy. Why does everyone bite when comments like that are made? You know soon as you read it that it was posted to get a reaction, a bit of infamy. But you had to give in didn't you, well didn't you, you know you did! The point I'm making is this; if no one reacted to those types of comments, you would probably see less of them. Maybe? Okay I know, I know it's just a theory. Well that's my contribution for now, back to work. Paul.. BTW..... There's one thing I have never understood about the way some people sign off with quotes. I mean to quote a line from a level 42 song and then say which song it comes from after it to an audience of such knowledge about the subject seems rather daft! People aren't half strange! ---------------------------------------- Paul Spencer Faculty of Applied Sciences University of the West of England, Bristol ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V99 #118 From: MFanko @ aol.com Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 08:22:14 EDT Can I just say how disappointed i am with the dijest recently - comments like those made about Boon are totally unnecessary and urge people to simply grow up - we are supposed to be fans of the music are we not? When people say that it doesn't matter and that we can all say what we want, that's ok, but consider that the digest will be losing some it's best readers and L42 fans if this childish behaviour continues or escalates - quit it guys and celebrate Level 42. If anyone can tell me where i can pick up bootlegs - The White Funky in particular - please let me know on the digest or even better, email - thanks. It's not the same for us - you must hear me when i say: goodbye! martyn ------------------------------ Subject: Slaggin off' and Shitstorms From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 09:56:03 EDT Gotta say i agree with Pat Flanagan on this one folks. As much as I might not agree with everything that is posted here, and escpecially the stuff about BOON, it's just someone's opinion. Nothing more. Let's try not to jump all over someone whenever they 'insult' the band. Perhaps the offending party just needs to hear an opposing view, or maybe we can ask him where he read these interviews where Boon was being a jerk? I've never heard drug rumours regarding any member of the band, so maybe this is info gotten from another fan? Who knows? I'd love to hear more folks post to the digest, but I guarantee most folks are probably afraid to post with anything other than the 'party' line. So when we jump on disenting views, we scare off more posters. David, I think these are isolated incidents, so don't think that all we do here is slag each other off. Sometimes we even have cool discussions. Dont we all remember the cool Mindi Disc/Atrac discussions? :-) Charl, I have never heard of anyone using a 'permanent' ring on their finger, but have seen folks use a removable ring for the thumb. Mark uses tape, and did have some custom rubber rings once. Dirk, that 12' with Moody/Starchild is a bootleg out of New York. I have one in my collection somewhere. These types of boots were very popular in the eighties, as some of the rare tracks were hard to get. The track 'Moody' was very popular here, and features a great bassline. The band was made up of 3 sisters, and a brother. One of the girls plays bass. Just goes to show how popular 'Starchild' was here in NY. Dirkies, note this is just the regular version of the song, NOT a different mix. And the audio quality is suspect. Sounds like a custom disc made from a tape. Also, while in Las vegas, my cousin showed me a compilation called 'Perfect Beats', released by Tommy Boy records in NYC. It includes classic dance tracks, and also includes 'Starchild'. There are 4 -5 volumes in this series. Ernest, no idea about obtaining 'The White Funky'. Used to be able to find it easily in NYC, but not anymore. I did notice that it seems to be available with 2 diff covers. Also, i do believe the version of 'physical presence' is recording during the same gigs as the 'Live At Wembley' video tape. From: Robert J Martin Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 10:34:01 -0400 (EDT) Greetings, I've been searching for many years for this now out of print video of "Guaranteed Live". This was either relaeased only in PAL format an LD format and most resources continue to state that it has long gone out of print. At this point I have just decided to throw up my hands and settle for a copy. If someone would be wiling to make a VHS (not-PAL) copy of the video for me it would be greatly appreciated as I have still never seen the video. I will send blank tapes . From: Ben Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 18:21:45 +0100 First of all, Why is everyone suddenly slagging of Boon, saying he is crap. If they would just LISTEN to his guitar work on A Physical Prescence ( The album, not the song ) they would instantly recognise his skills as a guitar player, on that album he plays alot more guitar on songs that he doesn't usually play much guitar on. Eyes Waterfalling and Kansas City Milkman, are both excellent examples. the fact that he doesn't widdle hyperfast solos all over the songs, proves that he is a talented player, most players can't resist it. Secondly so what if he was a bit of a git, loads of the best musicians were total gits, even worse than what Boon has been accused of, and he wrote superb lyrics. Ben. Also someone wrote >Hmm, I can see another rant coming... not unlike the "Is Mike Gay?" >thread! I wasn't here when this happened, what was the outcome ? is he or isn't he ? ------------------------------ Subject: FW: RE: Level42 Digest V99 #118 From: Alex.Nunez @ phs.com Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 11:34:49 -0600 > Winman! > > That's wild, because I used to work at a movie theatre, and we ran "Hot > Pursuit," and it did have Lessons In Love at the end of it. A company called rareighties have the Lessons In Love CD > Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Now that is the kind of post I just can not stand. I must have had to hit fifteen times to get by that! If you can't say something Level 42 related, then you have no business on the digest! Man, it just drains my pipes when people write in and all they do is slag off others. I mean, you'd never catch me posting anything that wasn't completely focused on Level 42. It's that kind of free-roaming claptrap that undermines the otherwise good, fair, and righteous modern society. Eric, I demand that you create several new digests: 1) Questions about Level 42 2) Answers to those questions 3) Discussion about the answers--agreements only 4) Discussion about those same answers--disagreements only 5) Slagging off people who don't completely agree with everything you say, no matter how ridiculous and unfounded your opinion 6) Joe P. only (Surreal enough for you?) ...Alex... " 'Til I saw you in pieces" ------------------------------ Subject: On behalf of Nightfly From: alex.friesen @ sickkids.on.ca Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 19:27:50 -0400 Okay, here's the scoop on yesterday's post by Nightfly. That insightful and ebullient scribe know variously as Nightfly83, AG, and Mr. Badwin has not resubscribed to the digest. Whoever the miserable little worm is who pissed him off enough to unsubscribe should continue to wallow in his/her own little quagmire of misery, knowing that the most entertaining (former) member of the digest is (still) no longer a participant in our little circle of Level 42 fans. As a public service, I submit the following quotation from AG: "I remain unsubscribed, the message about the LIL CD video was placed by Eric as a one-off on my behalf because I didn't want to let down a vendor to whom I'd committed." So no, he's not eating his words. And no, he hasn't seen the light, as some might like to think, and become a born-again L42-related-posts-or-nothing member. And, another no, he did not unsubscribe as "a trick to engender approbation of [his] musings." So let us all bow our heads, and return to the somber tone that has blanketed the L42 digest recently. ...Alex... " 'Til I saw you in pieces" ------------------------------ Subject: AG returns?
