Better? No. Different? Q.E.D. The subtlety of Boon's guitar work is without compare. One of my musician friends once remarked whilst listening to RITF (the album)- "Listen to the embellishments and accents in this! THIS is what separates GREAT bands from good bands!" > Hell with Boon. Hey, I guess you're entitled to your opinion- however wrong it may be. Zap! ------------------------------ Subject: Sad Note: RIP Roger Troutman From: Pat Flanagan Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 11:16:25 -0500 Apparantly, Roger Troutman of Zapp was found shot to death outside his studio, his brother in a car nearby shot in the head. They're saying it looks like his brother committed a murder/suicide. This brings a sad end to an extremely talented keyboard/voicebox player (and a really nice guy). I'll miss him. ____________________ PFPD -- newmedia marketing consulting a limited liability company PO Box 281, Granger, IN 46530-0281 v:616.663.2250 -- competitive business advantages through creative technology ------------------------------ Subject: Boon-bashing From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 12:26:19 EDT > Having read several text interviews with Boon I get the feeling that > he may have been a really awful person to work with. Well, Alan brought a great rock feel to L42's music, but plenty of foks here loved Boon's funky chops. Sure, he wasn't the most melodic soloist, but I've never heard any other guitarist do a better job of rhythm-playing on funk music. And I told him so when I met him at Shep Bush! In fact, I'm not sure what you mean by "nothing but jazzy accents, funk back up...." What else is guitar player for? I got one editon but lost it, but i seem to remember the guy who ran it had tonnes of live material - is he on the digest or does anyone know who/where he is? Can anyone tell me how much a good quality JD MK bass is over here in the UK? I think its around the £650 mark, I hope so as i think I can save enough to sell my Aria Pro II and save up another £300 !! If anyone is selling one say!! Especially around the London area..... Phoned up Status and a MK bass is at least £1.500 new - sod that, I'd have to sell me drum kit for that! take care Jonathan ------------------------------ Subject: Mr. Pink From: "Brian Flint" Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 10:24:20 PDT Anybody have transcriptions (tab or standard) for Mr. Pink, preferably the Physical Presence version. If anyone is interested in the track listing then mail me privately as it is non Level orientated and I will not be clogging up the digest with it! "Dan Nesselroth" I am sorry my friend bit I think your comments were a tad unfair about Boon. It is well documented that Boon became ill during the World Machine and Running in the family years due to the stresses of touring and personal problems, however one thing remained a constant throughout. The quality of Boons lyrics and guitar solos speak for themselves and a couple of my fave's - Hours by the windows and Fashion fever could not be further apart. Therefore your comment about his solo's sounding the same is a bit unfounded I must say. To be honest, for Boon to come back into the fray with an album as strong as Tinman when he has gone through so much upheaval in his life is testament to the man's fighting spirit and talent. I must also say that if Boon were bitter about his lack of success with this album as you have said surely he would not have worked with Mark on his solo projects and he would certainly not have turned up at the gig at Shepherds Bush. In fact, when he was asked what he thought of the show he was very complimentary and knowing Boon I do not think he would have lied about this as he is not that type of person. I don't know about anybody else but one of the things I have always admired about Level 42 is the fact that they had the ability to change their musical style without losing their identity, the music always had a common thread running through it that always belonged to them. I have rated all of Level's musicians both original members and later one's and each one has brought something different with them to the band. I think it unfair to berate a member just because he has aired his views, would you rather the guy kept his mouth shut and did not speak to us at all? I for one am glad he is talking to us and hope that he keeps on doing so. anyone else share this view? I've been reading all these pages for quite a while now and I guess it was about time that I said my bit! I was pleased to read that someone mentioned RUSH ! As well as the fact that I am a big MK fan & L42 I also like Rush as I am a bassist as well. I find it strange that the two biggest influences in my style of playing have the same influence for the way they play. Both L42(mainly Mark) and Rush(mainly Geddy Lee)both were big Jack Bruce (Cream) fans. I don't know if many of you out there are famililar with Rush so for the ones that are not they are not Heavy Metal as some people I've spoken to tend to think! ( I like this band alot!) I had to say that bit... also.. there are some bass plyers who sing that were not mentioned ( I think ) Here are some of my fravorites! 1. Mark King ( you guessed it!) 2. Geddy Lee...Rush !! Cool player !! 3. Nick Beggs... Kagagoogoo.. (Where are you now?) (& ones that were mentioned) 4. Sting. 5. Paul McCartney. 6. Phil Lynott. And as for 7, well there are more but I think I,ve said enough. Thanks, Rich. PS Heaven: The Pursuit of Accidents (track Theme to Margaret Mr Pink. ( Hi Lisa!)((Mrs)) Foundation & Empire Plus AAGGHHHHH So many to choose from! Hell: Gresham Blues. (A big sorry to the sax player who wrote in to say it was good to play to, but for me, it was,nt the L42 I knew. It nevered belonged to the G album. Like I mentioned, I would say that the type of bass, set-up and string gauge dictate as to if a 4 string can go so low.... Also Ade asked about Hot Water.... >One thing that puzzles me though is that HW on the single and the album is >played a semitone higher than when its played live with the lowest note >being an 'F' instead of an 'E'. Although it can be played in this key it >is much easier in 'E' because of the open string, so could it be for the >album version MK tuned up to an 'F' ? Or are my ears playing tricks ? If >so, why play it in such a strange key, is it easier to sing just a semitone >higher ? It's OK mate, your ears do serve you correctly. My theory on this is that at the mixing stage, the tape speed of the recording was nudged up a bit (therefore pitching everything up a semitone) to give the track a bit more drive. It's something I've done to tunes I've mixed that my band has recorded, because they give the feeling of dragging slightly at the recorded speed. This could be due to the fact that the song was being marketed to be a dance floor filler. BTW, Chuck, If I get time, I will transcribe the different parts of the SAY bassline, but no promises mate OK !!!
