It's been quite a while yes! This time, watch out for (1) a fire in the house and (2) snow avalanches. We are all glad to have you back. My Guaranteed CD is still playing fine!! ;-) Re: Jaco Pastorius Someone said yesterday he was dead / messed up... what exactly happened? Just curious. Another "42" occurence for me: So there I was, looking through all the books we have in our office about Orbix 2.3c, on how to register the Interface Repository. After several hours, still nothing. Finally I find the Orbix 2.3c Administrator's Guide buried under a lot of junk. (Sounds like something out of a Indiana Jones movie, hey?) So I look in the index for "Registering the Interface Repository". And, lo and behold, where else shall thy Answer be than on the magical page 42. And besides this, I often wake up at night (like Debbie) and the alarm clock reads "x:42" where "x" is any hour. As well as looking on my watch, looking at the car odometer, phone numbers, ... but this is probably all coincidence, right, as I am more aware of "42" in a set of digits than any other number, right? Hmmm. Sean, are you there? Did you get my latest e-mail? I am quite embarrased by this so I was wondering if the other JJ fans out there could recommend some others to get. Thanks. During my golf game the other day someone asked my partner and I if we had extra tees. I replied "I only have four" and my partner said.... From: "Byrdman (Michael M. Byrd)" Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 12:29:20 -0600 Its been a lousy few days here in Denver. It goes without saying that the tragedy is appalling. But this is a situation that has kidnapped the whole community. Although we are a rapidly growing community, we still have small town roots. When we celebrate (The Super Bowl), we all celebrate. When we mourn, we all mourn. Little ton is about 10-20 minutes southwest of Denver, just before the foothills. Its so tiny, I joked earlier, that if in a bus with a porta-potty and you went to the bathroom you could miss the whole town. Christmas the older portion of the town (the civic areas like the town hall and such), deck out in a classic Norman Rockwell christmas look. As you may know, baseball and basketball games have been canceled because of this, all Littleton schools have been closed undefinately, and the whole Denver community has been holding vigils for the students. Its a real messed up time here in the Mile High city. Of course this has nothing to do with Level 42, and those who are put off by this message can sue me. But I don't really feel like singing today... Well, except for this: Its late I know but I can't sleep Peace of mind is hard to keep I saw it on the news today Twenty-five just blown away I want eyes...I want eyes Another page in history But the why is still a mystery Won't you come so we can talk this through Do you need me know like I need you I want eyes...I want eyes.... I also picked up a L42 tour programme which I think is from the World Machine days. Inside the programme it has pictures of the Lessons In Love video and a picture of the Gould brothers crounching near a racing car - can anyone shed anymore light ? I am finding that 12" versions of classic L42 songs are really worth collecting. Recently I have picked up 12" versions of You Can't Blame Louis, Weave Your Spell, Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind, which are all really funky. The 12" All Over You mixes are not bad, especially the K-Klass Vocal which was not released on any singles. Speaking of which I have heard rumours that Mark King did some remixes of this song , which I would like to hear. Can anyone confirm this ????? I too agree with recent comments about Forever Now. I think this was a great album and it is my second favourite behind World Machine. It would have been interesting if the group released this album after Staring At The Sun - to see how it would have sold commercially. Staying with Forever Now, what is so special about the Japanese version of this album ? I'm still plugging away at designing my own L42 web site. Does anyone have a scanned image of the Love Meeting Love sleeve design that I could use on the web site ???? Finally - three more questions : 1. When are the Unreached Levels CDs to be sent out as I have mailed the address and heard nothing ? 2. When is the Mark King fan club starting ? 3. Is any of Mark's tracks that did not make One Man going to be released this year ? Too much work and not enough play! Anyway, here's my bit on slap playing. 1) It is harder than finger style. It's particularly hard to sound good slapping, and not sound cheesy. 2) I've always thought that a lot of musicians put slap into a musical era, late 70s to mid 80s and as such don't use it much as it sounds like that era too much. It's a bit like flared trousers, cool at the time but seem odd and out of place out of their era. It's a shame 'cos as a style it's got a lot going for it. 3) MK's style melodic and fits the songs well. A lot of slappers just follow the root note of the chord and pop on the octave (i.e. if the chord of C is being played then the bass player slaps a low C and pops a high C, if the next chord is a D then the same again). Typically nothing much is done with rhythm so it sounds a bit cheesy and adds nothing to the song. MK and more inventive bass players use the other notes in the chord and follow the chord progressions differently. SAY is a great example of this. 4) MKs style is rhythmic. Listen to the first bars of LG. It's almost all played the same note (low E) but with lots of use of ghost notes to give rhythm. HW is another example of great rhythm in a bass line. 5) MK breaks lots of slap rules. I never thought you could slap in a slow song and make it fit until I heard Out of Sight, Out of mind. On the league of bass players, I'd love to discuss bass lines, and swap tabs/notes with other bass players out there, but there's more to L42 than just MK's bass and I wouldn't want to clog the digest with it, any suggestions ? And now a quick question: I am planning on buying a CD writer, mainly for backing up my PC but would love to use it also to make a CD of my fave L42 songs. Do I need a specific type of CD writer and/or software to do this ? Remund" Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 00:32:46 -0600 Hey Levelheads, A couple of digests ago someone brought up naming a L42 song that one "personally" finds to be a difficult slap piece. "Personally", where do I begin? For me Lessons in Love comes to mind. Not that I find the piece difficult to slap but half way through the song my damn right hand becomes extremely fatigued and just wants to quit. Maybe I am not getting enough nutrients or something? I obviously need to practice more. But after watching the "Live at Wembley" video and seeing Mark's right hand continually traveling at warp factor 9 throughout the entire song I have to believe that Mark's alias is "Steve Austin". His right arm has to be bionic. The album and single cover features Alexie striking the Michael Jackson "Off the Wall" pose. Best wishes,TerryP _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
