I thought that was funny. Anyway, many people have e-mailed me privately for more info on the Levelfest, so I figured I would post a preliminary itinerary to clear things up. May 22nd Folks begin to arrive. We meet up for dinner and drinks that evening in London, perhaps taking in a concert if someone cool is playing (I'll check Time Out when I get there to see what's up). May 23rd We get on a bus at Victoria Station at around 2PM to go to Portsmouth, and then take the ferry to the Isle of Wight. That would get us to Joe DaFlos at around 6PM. We eat, drink, listen to and sing Level 42 songs until we pass out. If we close our eyes and click our heels three times, Mark will walk in with his bass and give us a ditty from his new CD. We crash in a bunch of rooms at nearby hotels. May 24th We go back to London late morning, everyone gets themselves together (and gets rid of their hangovers), then we hit the CD stores on Oxford St. and Leicester Sq. (Tower, Virgin and HMV are all within a few blocks of each other) and do some sightseeing. We meet up for drinks/dinner again. May 25th Everyone who needs to leave does so, and those who are staying can scatter to the winds or hang out. A number of us are going to Bath on a day trip. That should answer a lot of the questions I've been getting. Many people have stated that they can't go to the entire thing, so feel free to join us at any point during the three days. Also, many people (US digesters especially) are staying for at least two or three more days, so don't hesitate to come then as well. I will post the telephone number of my hotel as soon as I get it, so that people can find out the places we are meeting. That's all folks. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Any ideas? Well just one, though it doesn't have much to do with actually finding Mark! If you manage to find him at a show or other such event, I would suggest having him sign your son's pick guard rather than the actual bass. There are two benefits to this. One, you don't have to lug the whole bass around (very important)! Two, you can then get the pick guard laminated to protect the autograph so that the bass is still able to be played without worry for the highly valuable ;^) autograph! Or as another option, you can always get another of that bass's pickguards and use that instead to be extra safe. Hope this is helpful to anyone out there autograph hunting! ------------------------------- Chris Staunton chriss @ pcsupplies.com ...gotta get back to BASSics... ------------------------------- ------------------------------ Subject: RE: Level42 Digest V98 #98 From: "Will Greer" Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 08:40:45 -0600 > it looks like 'The Sun Goes Down' is gonna be the re-issue for the > chart - what do you all think of this? - is it the right track? how far > will it go in the chart? I don't get a good feeling about it. I don't think "The Sun Goes Down" is going to fit very well in any radio stations' formats, except for the ones who don't use playlists and could play it anyway if they liked it. If I were choosing, I would pick something raw and straightforward, without a load of synth stuff (I suppose TSGD is like that, but not quite what I have in mind). And something "artistic" - we would need to get the same people listening to Level 42 as are buying Dave Matthews Band CDs right now. How about: - Sunbed Song - Hot Water (the mix from True Colours) Or (not going to happen but I would dig it), how about a new arrangement of "As Years Go By"? Cut out the dingy sounding keys at the beginning, and make it sound like it would have if it were on "Staring at the Sun" (but with better production) - a little more guitar here, and some dry piano. I think that is a great song from a writing perspective. And the shuffle beat is tough to pull off tightly with a lot going on. I can see them on Letterman now playing it. ===================================== Will Greer Empower Solutions, LLC Denver, Colorado (303) 888-7154 mailto:Will_Greer @ EmpowerSolutions.com http://www.EmpowerSolutions.com ===================================== ------------------------------ Subject: Influences From: jcvaeth @ juno.com (john c vaeth) Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 10:36:54 EDT Hey Level-folk! Just picked up a copy of Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Bird of Fire" album ('73). Since Mark King cites them (and John Mclaughlin in particular) as an influence I had to check them out. Some very interesting stuff! Very intense jamming. I definitely hear where Mark might have received much of his melodic sense in this music. Also, can anyone refer me to a website with any of Mark's bass licks in tablature? I have been having some success with Running in the Family. Just figured out "Children Say" and it is a blast! Someone made it > up ? I guess only some people at RCA/BMG Japan know...... ALL 20-bit "re-mastered" CD's are clearly identifiable by some sort of logo on the cover, such as "HDCD" or "UltraDisc", etc. These are all liscensed processes, and the logos must be displayed. If there isn't a logo, it ain't 20-bit re-mastered! > I figure there could be tiny differences between the "normal" Japanese version and > the European version regarding sound quality. I figure the plants in Europe > and Japan may have different mastering equipment etc. (Probably the > Japanese are better). There are always minute differences between runs from different production masters. I have compared a BMG club CD to a store-bought copy of the same title, and, while I couldn't say that one was better than the other, a slight difference was detectable. ************************************** > What's the simplest way to get Mark King to autograph my 12 year old son > Liam's bass? We all would like to have a couple of minutes with him! Speaking of which, has anybody contacted Crockford about the ILF? Does he know we're coming? I' am myself a bass player in the Royal Marines Band service' Playing Tuba,Double Bass and bass guitar but obviously prefering the guitar were i have been working very hard on my slap prowess, and with years behind me (I'm 35) It's worked. The reason for this message is to plead with anybody out there with a copy of the Channel 4 programme "Play at Home" from 1984 to contact me with the possibility of getting a copy. I thought it would be a very limited edition but the store had plenty, so if anybody wants it but can't get it I could buy one and send it. It cost about fl. 50,- which is about $25,- I would guess... Well, that'll be all for now - later! Mighty Maomoondog "the sweetest suicide as if we don't exist but live" © 1997 aLPHaViLLe
