Date: Mon, 13 Apr 1998 15:08:25 +0200 Just a quickie: In Holland we have a radio-station named Veronica (known for their RockNight with Level 42). Every year they broadcast a top 100 of all times, put together by listeners (they can send in songs that are older than one year that they really like). Well, L42 has (re?)entered the chart, with (of course here in Holland): Love games. From the top of my mind I belive the song is at number 70, not very high I think. No other L42 songs are in the list. Usually there is a lot of U2, the Dire Straits, Queen and Genesis. Really classic rock, so to say. The battle for the top spot is always between Queen (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Led Zeppelin (Stairway to Heaven), this years Queen has won again. OK, that's all. Hope you all had a nice Easter. Or, as the pope always puts it in his Easter greetings: "veel dank voor de bloemen!" (he always thanks the dutch for sending flowers...) Bye bye, Arjan ------------------------------ Subject: More Prince's Trust From: J Shuford Date: Mon, 13 Apr 1998 08:23:01 -0700 (PDT) I really wish I had more of the 1989 show than I have on tape. For a time there was a CD of the show available out of Japan. I was dumb and failed to order it when I could have reasonably expected to find it (it was $40 back then). To reply to Lolita's comments, yes, Mark does look like he's having a great time playing for Will Downing, and there's so much other great stuff in that show. Even the Level 42 Philharmonic version of Sgt Pepper's is great, as Mark is slapping and popping away. I would love to hear Mark play more straightforward soul/r&b basslines, but that really goes for the whole of L42. The 1989 Prince's Trust is so great because you really get to see how talented they all are and how well they can play a variety of styles. Going from Andy Bell to John Farnham to Will Downing to Swing Out Sister to Nigel Kennedy, etc. is a lot of shifting. Oh, what I wouldn't give to hear Mark playing "Summertime" along with Nigel Kennedy! Somebody MUST get me a copy of this!!! By the way...does anybody know anything about John Farnham besides his appearance at the Prince's Trust? I thought the first song on that tape, "The Age of Reason" was very cool, and he seemed like a decent enough blue-eyed-soulboy, but I also got the feeling that this song wasn't nearly so cool as L42 made it sound, like the Levels had really contributed something special to it. Finally, anybody notice from that show just how well-rested and smooth Mark's voice sounded? All for now... Hi. :^) The best I can tell, the reissue of Forever Now in Japan is NOT a 20 bit remaster. It does have a different catalog number because it is now in a midpriced line. The disc itself had the same number pressed into it as my original copy from Japan. I have listened on several different players and can hear no real difference sonically. Maybe a VERY slight bit more *air* throughout, especially around the vocals but not enough to lead me to believe it is a new or 20 bit mastering. This sort of difference can come simply for a new glass master being used that has slightly lower inheirent jitter. Also, nowhere in the book or on the sleeve does it mention being remastered. If someone has yet another version of FN from Japan that is definetely remastered please forward the details. A while back i got a CD from Japan that is the soundtrack to a TV show over there called The Gift. This CD features 4 tracks by Talbot/White. Does anyone know if any of these tracks has any input from Phillip Gould? Remember that he did play and write on United States Of Mind By Talbot/White. Just wondering if he had anything to do with these tunes. They are pretty nice tracks. Lastly, probably the biggest news that I have to offer. This weekend I got a VHS tape by Gary Husband. It features him playing with many different people that he has played with through the years and demonstrate that he is quite a techincally competent drummer and then some! I still can't say that I prefer his work with the band to Phil's. Phil is still much more emotive a player and has the ability to convey groove in a way that only can come naturaly and that Gary really doesn't posses. That said, it is all the more obvious from this tape what a badass Gary actually is. He plays with Holdsworth and Steve Topping who were both in Level 42 for very brief stints. Things didn't work out with Topping and he never performed live with them but was asked to join and actually rehearsed with the guys before they hired Alan Murphy, another badass, God rest his soul. He also was Quite an emotive player. Anyway, the big news is that Mark King appears on this tape playing his typical funk in duo with Gary. He is not featured for very long, 2 brief segments of just him and Gary together probably not totaling 7 min. together but this is probably the most recent material that Mark has played on that is currently available. Not terribly interesting but new nontheless. I think that is was taped last November or December. The tape is called Gary Husband interplay and improvisation on drums. It is out in the US on Warner Bros./Rittor Music. Typical instructional tape without much instruction, mainly demonstration. Well, I guess that that is about it. I await the remastered reissues and Marks new solo effort impatiently. Morgan or Ian, any news on them locating the multitracks for The Sun Goes Down so that they can proceed with the Best Of and singles? If anybody's looking for it, Level Best is available in Russell Acott, High Street, Oxford at 6.95 (about $12US). I'm more than happy to get it and send it on to anyone who wants it. AG
