They were the standard for display purposes in the US during the 1980's. A big cardbaord box with the disc in the bottom third of the case. As the world became politically correct, the concern arose over the wasted cardboard...In 1990, Peter Gabriel challenged the standard by refusing to release his album "Shaking The Tree" in a long box, forcing vendors to display his album either behind the counter or not at all since it would not fit in the standard shelves without a long box. This angered the retail industry greatly and many stores refused to sell the album. Other artists jumped on the political band wagon and followed Peter Gabriel's lead.Within 2 years. nearly all the longboxes were gone. New releases were only sold in the space saving shrink wrap you find today (ironically less often recycled than opaper board). So, if you really must have a long box, check out used and closeout record stores. They may have an old longbox covered in dust..... That's all folks............ paul F ------------------------------ Subject: Mark's next solo album... From: Rob Kadel Date: Wed, 04 Mar 1998 10:24:32 -0500 Hey, everybody- Anybody have a clue about Mark's next solo album. Let's see... he was supposed to release it last spring, then last summer, then last October, then we heard he'd scrapped the whole project 'cos it was too "dark"... The last I heard was this spring he'd be releasing the new material. Can anybody confirm or deny that? -Rob ------------------------------ Subject: Cheap Pre WM CD's... From: friday Date: Wed, 04 Mar 1998 13:14:34 -0500 Well, many of you reaped the rewards of my Level 42 CD findings recently. So far, I have yet to find any more pre World Machine CD's but I will continue looking.... Some of you also checked out the sight Music For A Song (I posted it several digests back) and also got some pre WM cd's dirt cheap. For those of you still looking... Try "www.musicforasong.com" and search under Level 42. You can still find some early L42 cd's for $7.77 NEW before shipping costs.... Give it a try.... When I find more new L42 stock, I will post it. I've been invited to sort through a local Blockbuster Music import supply of over 20 boxes after hours one day. Til then... Happy Hunting... paul F ------------------------------ Subject: Digest archives back up From: "Eric J. I got loads of mail about the "naughty" CD I have and some great suggestions. One was to make MP3's (above my head!). Will this be better than a chain of CD-R owners? I did get my friend to copy the CD for Jeff Grous and therefore whatever happens, I must make sure he gets a copy. I think I will send the disc to someone in the UK who will promise to either send me a copy back (so I can send it to Jeff) and pass one on to another digest member to continue the chain. If we can arrange for the CD to be copied everytime we should eventually get there! We also need to get a copy to CD-R owners in other countries asap. So far no-one has protested about the moral issue, but who knows what will happen in this digest. Warm up you CD-R's....The White Funky is comming! Why has this not been done before? Adam.
