From: dirk.vael @ lu.arthurandersen.com Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 12:42:31 +0100 I saw again MK on the Proms TV-show (another part), but again I have the impression he was/is no longer that energetic as he used to be... of course it's TV and not live experience, but afaik the video excerpts I saw with the LLLF dudes showing excerpts of the APP gigs (INDEED, ON TV, YES, THEY DO EXIST!!), the difference is enormous. (Could it be the 13 years already, ...phew!)?? and a very short thing to say: If I still see next week that same raving about JoeP I will unsubscribe after 2,5 years of loyal Digest support. THIS IS A LEVEL 42 DIGEST, not some racial discussion forum or whatever. I am really FED UP with all the recent non-L42 memos... We know we all hate him, so don't waste bandwidth on this, and esp. don't give the sick one the pleasure of all the attention devoted to him. No offense meant to anyone, but don't let ourselves deviate from "the chosen path"! anyway a happy 1999... From: Allan Soerensen Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 14:00:16 +0100 (MET) Hello everyone! I am a sort of new one on the Digest list. My name is Allan and I live in Denmark. I have been a fan of the band since around the Worldmachine release. I don't have a specific favorite album because it varies with time and moods but it may perhaps be The Pursuit album. Perhaps. I hope to contribute more in 1999, so until then: Happy 1999! Allan Soerensen ------------------------------ Subject: Joe P (again what a shame) From: "Ronald Kuipers" Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 14:38:41 +0100 Hi All, What I would like to know is, What the hell does a guy like that doing on this digest. I'm pretty sure he hates L42, as he seem to hate everything. There is a guy on the Introspective digest (Pet shop boys) who is also like this . I think it are people (If they are not one and the same) who have nothing better to do in their poor excuse of a live. I would like to call him a lot of names but then I would be a bit like him, if you want to know what I think of you just mail me privately and I will let you know. To Lolita : I have never met you nor you me but you seem to be a nice person. Don't let this guy get to you. And dump his messages in the trashbin, because that's probebly where they come from anyway. Have tons of fun in London I wish I could be there. Love . . . . . Ronald To all others happy new year LOL and LOL in 1999. Greetings. . . . . . Hopefully, we'll finally get all the remastered re-releases, in premium sound. Awhile back, some members were discussing a symbol found on some remastered reissues. Would this be the SBM trademark (Super Bit Mapping) found on some Columbia releases. I picked up the Marvin Gaye reissue of Midnight Love & The Sexual Healing Sessions. It has been remastered with SBM, and the sound just oozes and pumps out of the speakers (sorry, I'm in that Sexual Healing mood - damn, my wife's at work!). It also has the right mix of low and high end. For Marvin fans, of special value is the a capella version of Sexual Healing. Man, could he sing!! Level 42 should be on the SNL repeats in Canada in the next few weeks. I'll try to indicate the exact date for my fellow Canadians in the next week. Though I hate to admit it :), Mr A. Goodwin was correct when he said that abuse was the worst kind of retort (or summat like that, yeah Andrew?). So I would just let the Joe P / Kista issue die down. It's obvious that the man has some issues, which is sad, because if you read behind some of his posts he actually seemed quite intelligent and could be a worthwhile contributor to this Digest. It's O.K. to disagree with someone - simply respond with knowledge or wit. A few weeks ago, I was quite insulted about a non-Level issue to do with Indian food. At first, I thought Lolita's assumption about the non-authenticity of Indian food due to crap service and cooking was just so "American" (in Canada and probably elsewhere, that means "uninformed"). I was ready to lash out. But then I thought, perhaps it's better to educate those who would have no idea of knowing. This would be the best approach with Level 42 issues as well. So, if someone new to the list says, "Mark King is a great lead guitarist", one would respond correctly with "Sorry, Loz, but Mark plays bass". Let's be more tolerant in 1999. It's hard to explain the race issue unless you've been there, but it still pains me to this day that I had to leave my beloved England because my dad was sick and tired of the racial abuse. Fortunately, Level 42 and this Digest exemplify all that is good about race relations. Good to see Byrdman back on the Digest - how about some more posts??! Cliff Barua - Toronto ------------------------------ Subject: Sad B..tard From: Dave Dodd Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 16:29:41 -0500 Hello all, I'd just like to say that Parrington is obviously a bitter social misfit who isn't worth the time spent in writing this e-mail. What you can't say face to face isn't worth saying. I sincerely hope you got a life for Christmas. To everyone else, have a great new year and keep the peace. Dave ------------------------------ Subject: Introduction & Help From: Bill Burnett Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 15:07:21 +0000 Hello all. I have just joined your forum. My name is Bill Burnett, I am a bass player (surprise!) from Surrey, England. I have been a Level 42 Fan since 1985, they are my all time favourite band. Level 42: Level 42 is my all time favourite album & Heathrow is my all time favourite song, they are the band that first got me seriously interested in music, and seeing them live was the main cause of me taking up bass playing. My own band is called Sphere. we are an instrumental prog rock/jazz fusion outfit (sorry - shameless self publication comes as standard) Can anyone help me with the following??? A) What is Mike Lindup doing? is there a new album, is he gigging etc. B) Where can I get hold of Bootlegs, early gigs, old B sides, any rare L42 stuff. Cheers for any help - I'm married to the beat. From: "Patrick Key" Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 17:35:49 +0100 Hmm, just finished reading the latest issue of the digest and I must say that I am getting a bit fed up with these never ending stories. As I am writing this right now I realize that I also am contributing to this "opinions-hit-the-fan" soap-opera which is exactly what this person wants. He is probably quite proud by now, when overlooking all the reactions he has stirred up. Interesting as it may be (I can agree on that) one canīt help feeling that most messages donīt belong here at all. I want to read about L42 and in particular Mr.King. I donīt want to see messages concerning ANYTHING else than L42-related stuff. Why? Because, as I was informed before joining, this digest was dedicated to the above stated subjects. If I felt that what the digest has delivered lately was of interest, there are thousands of newsgroups, IRC-channels or whatever out there where I could satisfy that need. Of course one might sidestep from time to time (like this: L-Ove, jag har inte din adress! Har du min?) as it may be the only way to get a message through to a person. But as it seems the 5-10 latest digests consists of 70-90% highly irrelevant topics. So, what am I saying here, trying to translate Swedish thougts into English words? Well, probably that if you want to tell a few personal friends something; mail to their private adresses. If it is related to our little forum here; go ahead and mail it and be sure that a lot of people will enjoy reading it! If this was a forum where we all would meet physically, this JoeP or whatever his/her name is, would be thown out by now. But since weīre not; dont mention him anymore. I'll be back but without the car ? ------------------------------ Subject: How to Deal with Joe Parrington? From: J Shuford Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 09:56:46 -0800 (PST) Dear Levelheads: I think Joe's letter to Lolita was really meant to get all of us stirred up. Joe is a bizarre person. At times in the past he has desperately wanted to be allowed back on the Digest. He has practically begged for it. Fortunately, nearly all of us saw that he was only crying crocodile tears. Because he can't be part of the club, he's going to try to ruin the club. He can't take the fact that we don't want, need, or value him so he's going to try to create disturbances in whatever way he can. In the recent "conversation" I had with him via e-mail, he made it abundantly clear that he has no interest in playing nice or in offering anybody here basic human respect. Joe is running his mouth about how pathetic we are because he has been excluded, and he can't take the fact that the reason he was excluded is himself. Joe, if you are reading this, YOU are the problem. All Joe is doing is making himself the center of attention in any way he can. I mean, for those of you who were on the Digest a couple of years ago, you all probably remember what a waste of space Joe's daily column, "Parrington's Point" was. Did he write that for us? No, he wrote it to be the center of attention. And now that he can't be the center of attention in anything resembling a positive way, he's going to do it from the outside. For people like Joe, negative attention is better than no attention at all, and he'll use anything to get that attention. That's disgusting. Worse yet, that's pathetic. Okay, so, for the rest of us, how do we handle Joe? Well, I hope that by now all of you who asked whether Joe is really all that bad have seen that YES, HE IS THAT BAD. And I hope you will all steer clear of him. If you have any questions about an e-mail you receive (from Joe or from some other name you don't recognize), please contact me. As for the rest of you who have been personally insulted recently or in the past, I can only imagine how those words sting no matter who says them. But as much as is possible, please try to remember who is saying them and give them no more credence. Fortunately, once again Joe has done himself in. Once again, he ran his mouth and showed just what kind of a "person" he is, so it shouldn't take any convincing from me or anybody else that this guy is bad and should be avoided. And now, on the eve of a brand new year, I wonder if anyone will join me in resolving to hit the 'delete' key on Joe, minimize public discussion of him, and in paying him only the amount of attention he deserves -- just enough to know that's he's up to his usual tricks and that he should be avoided and ignored (if possible). Happy New Year, Y'all John [well said... thanks, and have a great New Year. -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Tourfest & stuff From: Bilal42 @ aol.com Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 21:00:42 EST I just saw the new year in, then promptly rushed back and listened to my AYGB disc, I'll never get tired of those classiC L42 tracks! I'm still playing One Man over and over in my car mind you! Also I have taken a shine again to 'Changes' (the track). OK, Tourfest: I have had next to ZERO response or interest from anyone (ZERO!!!). It has been brought to my attention today that this is because people (like myself) are too busy with financial year end, festivities and holidays to respond to the ILF list messages. Also, someone reminded me today that the tourists will need to use the Sunday (31st) to see the sights (recommended!) so may not be up for a get together until evening. I'm sure there will be more interest closer to the actual date! So, for now lets do it this way: We can decide a meeting point closer to the day, we'll just go and drink somewhere (wherever is convenient) and pile into whatever restaurants we find. We'll have a good laugh for sure! I dont think the minibus idea is going to work out, as there are so many different people with different plans, its expensive and also there is the parking/driver issue. So, in summary... if you are going to the concerts, get onto the ILF mailing list now and look forward to some great music!!! - I may need to share accom in London, anyone want to share a hotel? I dont want to stay with my cousin as I'll be getting in late no doubt! As of tomorrow, I will be tied up until Jan 23rd, so unfortunately cant handle any more ticket orders etc etc - I'm going to have to lie low for a while. You can still mail me though. I do have one spare unclaimed copy of One Man (sealed, its still such a cool album), mail me if you want it, - I still have Bitter Moon CDs which I bought for folk but they never sent their addresses!!! If you are interested, mail me. also... did anyone see Lenny Henry at the last L42 concert? Virgin Radio played both SAY and LIL recently, LIL is #120 in their top 500, well done boys! Happy New Year to all. Also I hope Ramadan is going well for those concerned; I'm sure its Hanaka soon too isnt it? Happy Hanaka if I missed that. Love y'all Bilal http://members.aol.com/bilal42 ------------------------------ Subject: Polydor Nightmare... From: Bilal42 @ aol.com Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 21:54:54 EST In a message dated 31/12/98 11:01:08 GMT, you Antonio Perez write: << I'm a HISPANIC(minority) Police Officer/Level 42 fanatic. If you feel that a can of whoop-ass would do you justice, email me direct and we will set an appointment. I have no problems with putting people in the hospital. Antonio Perez >> now that is just plain ridiculous. I rarely respond to individual comments here, but I didnt like reading that one. Antonio, I'm sure you were either joking or just talking out of character. No more Jo P stuff please - lets get back to the music! - OK, does anyone know what bass / amps were used on the early tapes stuff? - Does anyone else here enjoy the bass work on Pamela as much as me? I think it sounds great - David, any info on JD circuitry upgrades? By the way, I had a really, really really bad nightmare 2 weeks ago... I was really happy in the dream, I was working for Polydor, assigned to the Level 42 project. Only it turned into nightmare. I was sitting with Wally at a mixing desk and we were laughing because we were so pleased with the recordings for the next album (83 - 84 period). 'These guys are amazing' said Wally. But then an assholic record company guy (no offense Polydor, I know how hard the realities of business are) took me aside and told me that my job was to decide the tracklist. 'YOU CANT MAKE IT A DOUBLE LP he said vehemently'. 'But it has to be' I said, 'the tracks are amazing' 'Theres no choice Bilal, the boss upstairs says says 10 tracks, no more' he said 'But we've got stuff like TROTHRM...' I plead Anyone who knows me that I am completely over awed by the b-side: 'The Return of the Handsome Rugged Man' and I also like 'Cant Walk You Home' a lot. The rest of the argument centred around those two tracks, with me arguing that they were just too good to be dropped. I actually woke up from that nightmare, it was that worrying! Makes my real life job seem eeeeeeasy peasy lemon squeezy! Listening to the B side only releases over the years, each one of them a masterpiece, (At This Great Distance for example), it makes me think that deciding what to include and what to ommit from the albums must have been the hardest part of making the album! I wonder what other gems are still unreleased as yet!!! Bilal ------------------------------ Subject: NOTP on TV last night... From: "Andre Huijts" Date: Fri, 1 Jan 1999 11:45:29 +0100 Last night the Ahoy' Night Of The Proms gig was shown on Dutch television. To be honest it was quite diappointing from a Level 42 fan point of view. Only Marks' bass solo and Love Games were shown..... :-( ! And if that wasn't bad enough, the idiots had the nerve to edit it ! They took a large chunk out of the song, including the excellent trumpet solo by Ole Edvard ! And after Love Games, Mark only returned in the final song...... So both coverages (The Belgian and Dutch) didn't show Bitter Moon at all........ (Interesting remark: after the last part of the Belgian NOTP transmissions, the two Belgian guys who organise the NOTP gave some comments and interviewed eachother and one of the questions was what they found the best pop part of the '98 NOTP. One of them answered that Bitter Moon by Mark King was his favorit of the show !) I know MD recordings have been made, so it may surface later on, but it is a shame that Mark didn't get to promte his new stuff.......... There were some great things on the show however and that is that some digesters were "in the picture" ! Especialy Arjan Meijer, who was wearing his "Winston Walker" Level 42 shirt (I still have not forgiven myself that I forgot to take it with me that night) ! ! ! Winston and Arjan some great Level 42 promotion !!! And also Helga and Henri Blakenburg and (regretfully) also myself are a split second on TV.....YEAHHAH Now we're famous ;) ! !
