Firstly on the Kista and Henri thing: It's a shame that for the past two or three digests we've all been distratcted from the real purpose of things and been compelled to defend each party etc but that is the way of things in the world and will always be but let's hope that for now that is it. The festive season is upon us after all folks !!!!! (kista - i tried to send you an e mail mate but it came up as unknown member, will you get in touch?, I have something for you, and it's not unpleasant!!) Secondly to all those who have requested a copy of the pier from me: I have saved all of your details on disc and will keep them in a safe place, I am moving house on the 18th of December and as this is bound to be hectic (as my good pal Loz will agree) I will be unable to do any taping for a couple of weeks untill I have sorted myself out. Don't worry though I won't forget anyone and will do all the copies plus an added bonus for people who replied as soon as things are back to normal. If anyone else wants The Pier you can still e mail me your request and I will add you details to the list. Bilal: Did you get my list mate? and will you get in touch? Morgan: Same as above! and I will be sending you some Level pictures for the website tonight. Bill Miller: I had a chat with an old friend of mine Jennie Irvine from the Isle of Wight last night and she said ou may be able to help me out with some things I am looking for. Will you drop as a line so we can have a chat. Paul Hammond, I will download that Staring at the sun picture of Mark you were looking at at the Levelfest tonight for you, Let me know when you get it To Loz and David in Dublin, You're goodies are en route and I would love to know when to recieve them To everyone else out there in Digest land I hope you all have a merry xmas / Thanksgiving and A peaceful new year! Heres to a Level saturated 1999 As Mark said "May the next ten break the mold!!!" Take care all Lisa 'Mrs Pink' ------------------------------ Subject: Spelling / L42 on SNL From: Cliff.Barua @ ec.gc.ca Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 08:52:22 -0500 As he was nice enough to correct my spelling errors, I would like to thank Andru Godwynn for his efforts. Should you ever visit Canada, you should know that the name "Rusedski" is banned and you will be deported immediately. Small side note: Lennox Lewis, another AWOL Canadian/Brit/Jamaican was born in the same hospital as me, in the same year (West Ham Hospital, 1965). He's considered less and less of a traitor (here in Canada) every day. Thankfully, we still have Shania Twain (yeah, baby, yeah). I knew I had mispelled "Rockit", but couldn't be bothered to look up the proper spelling. Speaking of SNL, it is shown on the Comedy Network here in Canada, and they are up to early 1985 right now, and the shows are shown in chronological order. I have an on-line epsidode guide which lets me know when to tape some favourite music performances. Level 42 appeared in May 1986. I'll try to warn Canadian digest members about a week before the big day, so you can set your VCR's. It's a pretty decent performance of "Something About You", though they focus on Mike while Mark is doing some decent slapping in the background. The show was being broadcast in stereo by that time, so the sound is pretty decent. Unfortunately, the lads only performed one song. In the midst of all the controversy, I'd like to thank Eric for maintaining this Digest, as I near my fourth year of membership. It's been a lifeline to a group that I probably wouldn't have ever heard of again. Let's keep that in mind as we mull over the finer details of "Harry's" encounter with King Mark. Cliff Barua - Toronto ------------------------------ Subject: Stars I've met From: EMIKATIE @ aol.com Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 09:09:47 EST Thought I'd try to start a more positive thread with something that I saw a few days ago in these pages. While driving taxi in the mid 70's, I took Alice Cooper from his hotel to the airport and talked all about his music and stage act for 25 minutes. Just me an him. In the early 80's I rode down an elevator with Michael McDonald. Our office was on the 18th floor and hotel suites ended at the 15th floor. He got on, and we spoke about the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan for 15 floors. Just me and him. In California, on Venice Beach, in 1976 I met the captain from Starsky and Hutch, Captain Doby (I think that was his name) We actually tossed some frisbee back and forth and chatted about PM Glaser and the blond guy. For Canadian digesters, while visiting the Metro Toronto Zoo, I met the lead singer from Images in Vogue, I think his name is Martin Martindale or something like that. (too lazy to dig out my vinyl). Cliff B. you may know them. That's about it..... I've led a sheltered life, but not bad for a bloke from Buffalo. The machine stops. John ------------------------------ Subject: The NOTP disaster. From: "Huijts, Andre SSI-TSEA-222" Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 15:11:39 +0100 Dear all, Due to the developments on the Digest the last week I have decided to remove the pictures from the Night Of The Proms. I feel very, very disappointed and angry about how a lot of digesters seem to convict Henri (and me) about something very harmless. I realize that the "good" are suffering under the "bad" but I feel I have to make a point and also I wish not to cause any more calamity. I have already removed the pictures and the HTML files on the "xoom" site. The LLLF site will be updated soon. Please update your links as necesary. I hope you understand and support my decision. I have to admit that I doubt very much if I am willing to stay subscribed to the Level 42 digest. I have had so many good things from it. Wonderful contacts, fantastic music, special Level 42 things and I even have made some good friends (you know who you are). But I feel really hurt by all the lies and insane comparisons. We have been compared with paparazi (the ones who "killed' Lady Di) and now even with rapists. Somewhere there's a line, and it has been crossed too many times these days. However, through all this I had not even had the chance of mailing my story. I am planning on doing so this weekend. Read it and judge by yourself. Also Henri and I plan to come togeher next sunday, and we will make a statement that will be send to the digest. I do not regret a single second about the whole NOTP thing. It will be a dear memory. It's a shame it has been shadowed by all this. Thank you very much ! I really thank all of you who have showed their support and/or understanding. I thought I'd just mill about at the back, looking for a rowdy bunch of people wearing assorted garb of Level 42 through the ages. Faded and smelly tee-shirts (there comes a time when no matter how much you wash the damn thing, it's a tad whiffy only minutes after you put it on. I am fairly new to actually posting on the digest, but I've been around for a year or so "watching" everybody talk, and I must say I am blown away by the community that is displayed in this forum. I LOVE LEVEL 42!!!!!!!!! And I am thankful for the connections I now have with others that appreciate the music as much as I. This digest, if nothing else, gives me hope for the future of music. In America (where I have been stranded), there seems to be little or no knowledge of what good, crisp, smart music is anymore. You used to be able to turn on the radio and immediately hear a string of well-written hits that would leave a hook or two spinning in your head for days after. NOT ANYMORE! America's once high musical standards have been reduced to only a handful of raw talent; many of whom don't get a fair shake at Billboard because of the catch-22 of so-called "commercial playability". To open my Level 42 e-mail and hear our UK friends talk about music across the pond makes me wonder why they get it and we don't. In seems that Europe has never lost their taste in tunes (I can almost feel the smiles from that comment), and is still going strong in the pioneering of new sounds. In fact, not until yesterday did I realize that all of my most favorite artists are from Europe: Level 42, Genesis, Steve Winwood, Iona, Peter Gabriel, Annie Lennox, and Sting. And when I think about the music those names have created, it is all fresh, innovative and ground breaking stuff. Then, on the American side of the coin, somehow I have to explain Ice T, Michael Bolton, and the return of Meatloaf!!! Okay....off of that soapbox, does anyone out there share my feelings? Should there be a support group for twenty-something white males whose only musical day-brightener might be getting their "One Man" shipment from UPS right after lunch? Well, whatever happens to music in the future, here's to the celebration of the sensibility of Level 42...as well as to keeping them obscure enough that Puff Daddy (another embarrassment I'll have to explain to my grandchildren) doesn't get "creative" with one of their precious gems. I got the chance to see Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters live in Sept. here in Seattle. It was THE BEST jazz/funk concert I have been to. I got the new CD (Return of the Headhunters) when it came out. Another album that I highly recommend is "Thrust" which was just re-released and re-mastered on CD. That album is FUNKY especially "Actual Proof" which is the track. I never got the chance to L42 live even though they came to Seattle in '87 with Madonna, but I was only 11 at the time and not a serious fan. Another question for Jay Tracy, what issue of Bassics is MK in? Is he on the cover? Let me know. The most recent on I saw was with Jimmy Haslip of the Yellowjackets on the cover. Peace, Zanchie ------------------------------ Subject: searching omitted material From: "Dave Lumenta" Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 13:01:13 +0700 Levelheads, I'm a new subscriber from Indonesia. Although my country is facing some serious political, economic and social problems recently, I still have some nice memories when Level 42 played 2 sell-out shows here (Jakarta, Indonesia) in March 1988 during their Running In The Family World Tour (their one and only appearance here ever). The line-up was Mark, Mike, Gary Husband (dr) , Steve Topping (gtr), Krys Mach (sax) and Annie McCaig (back vox). I still have notes of the whole set that night: Almost There (opening, Gary Husband dropped one of his sticks accidentally for a few seconds), World Machine, Kansas City Milkman, Children Say, It's Over (Krys Mach playing a nice harmonica solo), To Be With You Again, Something About You, Leaving Me Now, Mr. Pink (complete with lights from Mark's bass frets), The Chant Has Begun, Micro Kid (also used as soundcheck material, complete with vocoder solo !!), The Sun Goes Down, The Chinese Way, Hot Water (Mike climbing up the P.A. Speakers), Lessons In Love (encore), Running In The Family (encore). Ironically, the whole crowd were still waiting for Love Games as the final encore, but it never happened. Fans were guessing for a long time: was it due to Phil & Boon Gould's exit at that time ? We never came to know. I was lucky enough to get Mark's and Mike's autographs, a photo and a chance to attend and ask some questions at their press conference at the hotel. My simple question was "Mark, what's your own favourite Level album ?" "True Colours. Definitely." "Your favourite Level tune ?" "Kansas City Milkman" That was just a nice experience. I was also delighted when Allan Holdsworth (which I had admired through his works with Soft Machine UK and Bruford) came to lend some help on the Guaranteed album. OK, enough sharing I guess. Can anybody help me with some information about the availability of 3 omitted items from the original vinyl version of A Physical Presence (mr. pink, turn it on & 88) ? Are any of these available in CD format (maybe some imports) ? Thanks before !
