The more I listen to it the more I like the songs. Its scary to think how good this album would be if he used real bass and drums. later laura Mark- If you tour in California, please bring your bass. >>> I don't see this. Off the top of my head, no more than 4 of the tracks on ONE MAN use synth bass, and a couple use synth drums (e.g. the title track). The bass is pretty heavy and 'non-clicky' (not what we're used to from Mr. King in recent years!) but this is due to the use of bass 'magnifiers' -- i.e. some sound processing on the bass guitar recorded. I wouldn't class this album as being particularly 'synthesised' -- no more so than your average L42 one anyway. I have an audio recording of the Regal Theatre, Hitchin gig in 1983 which was recorded off the radio -definitely my favourite live recording of them, even after listening to it thousands of times over the last 15 years! Can anyone help me find a video of the same concert? (Sight and Sound In Concert, broadcast on BBC). I've checked the web sites with no success -surely someone out there must have videoed it! Email me privately if anyone can help -name your price! I have packed evrything in my bedroom and brought the biographies down from the loft (thats, Level 42 - the definitive biography). One suggestion was that we buy a plot of land, and use the biographies to build a house, but weary of people pulling our house down to get a read we decided to stick to bricks and mortar. The only things not packed are the Level 42 collection which is now all out and taking up an amazing space, it includes: Over 100 cassettes Over 15 videos Over 200 CD's Over 200 12" & Lp's Nearly 100 12" Laser Discs, Minidisc, DCC's, CDvideos, 3" Cd'3, CDR's, 10"'s, Acetates, playable paper media About 5m^2 of in store display material Over 500 sheets of correspondence, much with band members 12 T-shirts Over 25 posters A tonne of official paper items All the song books all the usual stuff fanzines, badges, patches, whistles, watches, tour programmes, caps (hub and head), photos etc etc etc And in amongst it all somwhere is my only item by another group, my Sheffield Wednesday at wembley cassette, the offical recorded song featuring Paul Carrak! I now have to figure out how to get all that lot safely 3 miles to my new home. My rarest items are going seperatly, this is Love Meeting love Dazz 5 on clear vinyl, normal and W/l, and Sandstorm Dazz 4. These are treated with extra care. As for the Kaiserslaatern thing, ah well, too many bad memories to go over that old chestnut. Anyway, I'll probably be chucking most of the stuff above away, so let me know if you want some. And before some of you jump off you chairs to say I'm bragging on, this is in response to 2 request saying being as I'm getting all the stuff out, can I list it. (PS Mrs. Pink, I bet your collection dwarfs this?) I have been a L42 fan since they hit it big here w/"Something About You" in '86. At that time I had to import all their previous albums (they weren't made available in the States until almost a year later, except for "Standing in the Light"). My question is: in 1987, a friend of mine had an album guide dated 1983. In it, Level 42 was listed as having an EP titled "Strategy." The EP was dated 1981, I believe. Does anyone know anything about it? If so, how could I get it? Cheers, Dave Huber Delaware, USA ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Distortion From: "Benedict Poole" Date: Tue, 1 Dec 1998 12:29:16 -0000 I quite like the distortion on One Man. But then I quite like the production of Standing in the Light. So I'm in a minority. Too much high fidelity means a Pet Shop Boys digital dross album. A little distortion adds character, especially in bluesy numbers like If I Had Something. All IMHO of course! We rarely heard the Gould's speak - they were the enigmatic group members (all bands must have them by law), especially since Phil was buried behind Mount Drummore and Boon seemed terminally shy. Mike was too timid to ever really step from behind Mark's larger-than-life persona. Add to this the fact that the other band members were great musicians but Mark was a phenomenal musician who pioneered his own style of playing and it's not surprising that, "to the public/media MK=L42" - can't really argue with that. Those who know more about the band than that they were in the charts with 'SAY' may argue that Phil=L42, he was the creative force behind the best tracks, X-Files-conspiracy types might even maintain that, the '5th Member', Wally Badarou was actually the real L42. Mark's the most comfortable with publicity and likes talking about himself (he has a lot to talk about!) so small wonder he is shorthand for L42 - he shouts the loudest. >Does anyone know what the ticket sales are going like at shepherds bush, Croydon or >Hemel as tese are the >nearest to me. Where is the official CD, and the live video footage? :-) Richard, in ref to your post of yesterday, I don't think it was me dancing on that video, or at least i hope not. I was spinning the records while everyone else was dancing. At least that's how I remember it. I could have been drunk, and, well, you know the rest. Alan, regarding the re-issues: I think the last info we had from a digest member, was that they will be out next year, but Polydor has not yet set a release date. Also, the Video CD you mention must be played on a Laser Disc player. It's basically a mini laserdisc, and will not play on a CDROM drive. We had a discussion about this a month or so ago. I've seen a few folks mention getting together before or after gigs on the MK tour. Well, we are definitely gonna do that, but i imagine that we will come up with time and place sometime in January, so stay tuned. Also, i heard a strong rumor that the 'famous' BOB C of the BOB C video collection will be joining us for a few of the shows? What's the deal BOB? Confirm or deny? :-) Hey Dave, I forgot to respond to your post a week or so ago about having the next NY fest at your place. I'm up for that, as long as it doesn't conflict with the tour dates in January/Feb.. I just made a custom CD of solo tracks by former L42 members. There were some great tunes put out by this group. Here is the track list. Keep in mind I had a 74 minute time restraint. 1. The Essential - Mark King 2. Pictures On A Wall - Mark King 3. Chief Inspector - Wally Badarou 4. Summers Night In Wandsworth - SFX featuring Alan Murphy 5. Doom Bap Bap - SFX featuring Alan Murphy 6. Changes - Mike Lindup 7. Desire - Mike Lindup 8. Black Diamond Pearls - Talbot/White with Phil Gould on Piano 9. Kick Or The Kiss - Boon Gould 10. How Deep Is Your Heart - Boon Gould 11. Just Another Day - Jakko Jaksyk 12. Take My Hand - Mark King I think I may have gotten some titles slightly wrong, as I'm doing writing this from memory, but you get the idea. Any suggestions for a volume 2, and does anyone know of any other tunes by Phil i should have added? I just noticed that I left Gary Husband, and Alan Holdsworth off the list. Hmmm, have to rethink this CD again. Well, over the Thanksgiving holiday I'm in the car with my Fiancee (just a few more weeks), Sister, and my best man and we've got Running In The Family in the disc changer and we're signing "Lessons In Love", "Children Say", "To Be With You Again" and "It's Over" in full four part harmony and boppin' around like they did to Queen in the blue AMC Pacer in Wayne's World. Since we're all musicians and singers, we had no problem staying in key...... Now, the song "Set Me Up" from Guaranteed was sort of released as a promo in the United States. This is for discography purists who want EVERY detail. It was released on a handful of 4 track cassette compilations for retail stores (The Gap, The Lodge, Britches Great Outdoors) shortly after the album came out. I can't remember the name of the company, but anyone in retail should be able to check..... I finally got True Colours on CD yesterday after having listened ot it on a copied cassette from my brother's cassette so many years. Man it sounds good! This CD seems to have been mastered very well and has a different sound than the others. They really pumped up the bass too. The CD I got was printed in West Germany, the tape I had was the US version and didn't have My Hero. I had never heard anyone mention My Hero so I was pretty surprised when I saw it. Are any of the other songs on this CD different versions that the US version? And am I wrong or was the US version spelled Colors? My Pursuit of Accidents is also the German version w/ two extra remixes. Are any of it's other track versions any different? Where is the cheapest place to get the Greatist Hits and More? And I guess I've gotta get the Very Best Of too, so if anyone knows the cheapest place to get it... Thanks! Brian. ------------------------------ Subject: Night of the Proms!!! I have seen Mark live again!! Went to the night of the proms yesterday (Dec 1st). It featured Mark King, Lisa Stansfield, Wet Wet Wet and some more less famous people. Mark was great. He was still wearing his glittering jacket Christien described. His setlist was Lessons in Love, Running in the Family, Bitter Moon, bass solo and Love Games. It sounded just great with a full orchestra behind him. When I closed my eyes, it could have been Level 42. Mark did also a little part from West Side Story with John Miles. The others were great too, Lisa was fabulous, and Wet Wet Wet rocked the house. There was a Norwegian trumpet player, just great. The final featured all artists. Now I only hope that Mark will tour in the Netherlands next year. tcoy, Walter
