I have just joined the Worldmachine listing and I was wondering if there are any fans who live in the Kent or London area. I read some time ago that there are Level 42 fan ''get togethers'', and I wondered whether there was any news of forthcoming events or maybe even a convention of some sort in the UK ? I was fortunate enough to meet Mark King (at last !!) recently at The Roadhouse in Covent Garden just before One Man was released in the UK. We had a chat and he told me about the forthcoming tour and didn't rule out the possibility of the band re-forming. I look forward to hearing from anyone in my local area. Best Wishes to you all, Anthony Kay ------------------------------ Subject: taste From: dirk.vael @ lu.arthurandersen.com Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 13:53:47 +0100 If I read about guys who really like Guaranteed, I cannot imagine they'd prefer such album over Level 42, Early Tapes or The Pursuit of Accidents, IMO the best albums they ever released. Guaranteed gets nowhere near the 'level' of let's say Starchild, Dune Tune, Love Games, 88 etc... I compare it always like this: if these early albums were made of rock, Guaranteed would be made of plastic ! Just listen to the early extended versions of songs till '84, than listen to the later tracks and you cannot decline that the quality of the songs went steep downhill... No wonder Polydor refused Guaranteed after being used to the high quality (and sales!!) of their previous albums. And Forever Now... hmmmm, better than Guaranteed, a bit too polished IMO, but they should've released that after RITF, not after the Guaranteed debacle, might have sold better. And btw, talking about TSGD98 & Tin Tin (Out)? It's a guy who released (lousy, I admit) house tracks on Cleveland City Records (a label famous for it's awesome Chubby Chunks Vol.1 release, but also B-Line (Herbal Land) or that male singer I forgot his name (sings "if I can't have you", quite big hit in 93 or 94) (all a bit housy, but hey, there's more than pop&rock out there!) finally, anyone has comments on the cover artwork throughout the years of albums? The worst cover is undoubtly the Early Tapes (not Jap version)! Stylo Rouge, who did most of the 12" artwork is not exactly what I'd call professional ;-) But if I see now the covers of CDs of the "Kelly Family", with these really ugly people on the cover, I think we're not that bad with Level 42! my list is: (best first, worst last) World Machine RITF One Man SATS,(sober but tasty IMHO) APP L42 FN (Resurg) -> what a STUPID typeface! FN (RCA) True Colors POA Guaranteed SITL Mike Lindups changes Early Tapes (could it be worse than that!?) Best 12" cover probably HIMH, closely followed by Starchild. Also happens to be my absolute least favourite 42 song. Lars ------------------------------ Subject: OM! Enough Already! From: Billy Frank Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 13:41:48 +0000 ** High Priority ** Ok Ok - the bass purists out there may not have got what they wanted from the album - but lets face it MK has proved himself on that score. Has he not the right to progress as an artist- I'm sure no one out there would want him to stagnate. For me I'm just overjoyed that MK has decided to do something again - and that I will have a chance to see him play live. In many ways OM is simply a progression from where L42 left off. As far song writing goes MK HAS progressed as OM testifies and the balance between similarity and difference (to L42 that is) is just about right. Perhaps my only gripe about the album is that the last track starts out a little too similarly to Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Sweet Home Alabama' (its even in the same key!!!) On another matter - I can't find any decent bass tab for L42 on the net - does anyone know the site address with these resources? Billy Frank ------------------------------ Subject: Free to a good home From: MLYON @ nuworld.com (Lyon, Mark) Organization: NCH NuWorld Marketing Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 08:31:59 -0600 I have in my possession a copy of the Live at Wembley video and also the Fait Accompli video. Both are in VHS-PAL format (for those of you who are unfamiliar PAL format is used in most, if not all, European countries and most of the rest of the world. If you live in North America, you can't view these under normal conditions). Anyway, as I live in the US, I have no ability to view or use these and thought some level-head out there might enjoy. I would prefer they go to someone who does not own these (no collectors please). Once you are done, maybe you would pass them on to another follower of the best thing to ever come out of Great Britain. The first person to e-mail me - mlyon @ nuworld.com - with the promise to forward the necessary money for shipping (US $ please) gets them. I don't want to make money here just pass these on to a person or person who would enjoy them. ------------------------------ Subject: selling out/"growing up?" From: rotuar79 @ snyoneva.cc.oneonta.edu Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 09:56:05 -0400 (EDT) Hello everyone! All this talk about Mark King's new album has me very depressed. First of all, I'm happy that he's still around, making music. He's a familiar face in this big nameless, faceless void of one hit wonder bands that are plagueing the airways these days. I love his bass playing just as much as anyone, and I haven't heard the album yet, but if I ever saw it I would buy it out of respect for the man. I'm sure that with a little listening I would grow to like it. I don't think you can call the lack of bass playing selling out or growing up. It's just a new approach. I hear some talk about Rush in the digest, (by the way, the 1978 disc from the Different Stages collection has temporarily replaced Physical Presence in my CD player - it's just what the doctor ordered), and how they changed, and supposedly sold out. How can a band that achieved that much popularity sell out? If massive amounts of people are into them aren't they mainstream? I love old Rush, just like old Level 42, but in my opinion one of the best Rush albums is Presto. Every song has a really awesome groove, and none of them are like the old songs. I guess my point is that unfortunately things change, but you can't base all your opinions on the past. I guarantee that in comparison to most of the filth that is labeled as music these days, Mark King's new album is a refreshing reminder of what songs really are. Take it easy everyone, I'll step down now. Ant ------------------------------ Subject: TSGD'98 From: "Palmer, David" Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 15:27:30 -0000 Hi Everyone, Today I was minding my own business in HMV Guildford, Surrey, browsing through the singles section, when I thought 'let's have a look and see if I can find the Level 42 section !'. Thinking that there was no such section anymore I was shocked to find said section containing a CD single of the TSGD'98. I was beside myself and promptly bought it. I was under the impression that Polydor weren't going to release it as a single and it sure did surprise me. The sleeve design is very much like the 'Very Best Of' ,i.e. blue sky background, white writing. A tall white structure dominates, pointing to the sky. Anyway, the CD single was £4.49 and has only two tracks. No Tin Tin Mix ! 1) TSGD 98 Mix - Radio Edit 1 (feat Omar) 3.58 2) TSGD - Remastered Original Version 3.48 I got tickets for Mark King's gig at The Fairfield Hall, Croydon. I cannot wait. It's been far to long since the last Level 42 gig at The Albert Hall. It will be great to hear the One Man album played live, plus some of our old faves. What are the odds on a special guest, Mike Lindup, turning up ? It's great to read everyone's comments about One Man. Personally, I think it is a good album and it is getting plenty of airplay in my house. From: Dave.Valentine @ worldnet.att.ne Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 14:55:31 -0800 Hi, I am trying to locate a L42 song that had airplay/tvplay years ago, specifically the album/cd that the song is located on. The problem is I don't have the title but suspect that it came after the 1989 level best cd, it's not on there. The only clues I have are bits of the lyrics, here they are, hope someone who really knows the L42 songs can tell me which cd its on. various lyrics in the song....these most likely aren't 100% accurate.. "get right on track, got to getcha back.... "got you in the corner of my eye, now there's one more thing I can try.. if i remember right the video sort of had this zooming effect they put in on particular shots.... I think that you misunderstood my opinion. I was not comparing Mark King to Miles Davis. I merely used an example of Miles to show a musician who went through changing his/her style not for success but for personal development. We all go through changes even though others may not like them as with some people think with One Man. I am sure that Mark will continue to develop his style, but One Man is just the start of this process. I don't want this to be an on going battle because we are all sick of the One Man battle that has been going on since the release date. I love Mark King's work and respect it. Well I hope the next album Mark releases will be better for you. At least he is playing the old L42 stuff at his shows. Time marches on...face the future Peace, Zanchie W. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V98 #308 From: cfreeman @ wfyi.org (Cedric Freeman) Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 21:27:00 -0500 Level42 @ worldmachine.com,Internet writes: >It is considered remarkably bad "netiquette" to quote private e-mail >publicly without permission, particularly when you use it in a way >that changes the context. The smooth and melodic finger style was very ON w/lying Still again Good Man in a storm fits in that finger ..uh I mean, pigeon hole.
