I have recently bought a new turntable - cos my other one died several years ago - and I was going through all of my old 12" singles and I came accross - Gauranteed. The Wheel Spin Warriors Mix has a brilliant piano solo at the end of the mix, is Mike playing this or someone else - Is there a longer version of this piano solo cos I would love to hear it ? Also the bass playing all the way through is different to the original - but it is very lessons in love - again, is Mark playing this ? Finally - I have the cd single of this and the WSW mix aint on it - Does anyone have a cd version of it - ie without the odd crackle (I have transferred it to Minidisc, but you still get the odd crackle) and Can anyone tell me about any other mixes of L42 songs that are not on the cd singles - Obviously the one before cd singles dont count Thanks Alun PS - If anyone wants anything I have got on MD - drop me a line ------------------------------ Subject: High Wycombe From: Pat Flanagan Date: Thu, 22 Oct 1998 08:45:05 -0500 >From: MFanko @ aol.com >You guys will not believe this!........I am originally from High Wycombe, Next time you're back in High Wycombe, please say Hi to Howard Jones from all of us. >Having left England at the age of 12, I'm convinced >that I'd be living in a cardboard box Am I living in a box? I have not had the time to post in a couple of weeks (school, school, school) but was happy to be able to hear all of the songs from One Man (thank you Carl) that I had not previously been able to catch. While I am a huge fan of Level 42 and enjoy offerings the members do oustide of the band (which now means everything) I am disappointed with the album. **ONE MAN** nice enough if you are into today's music of endless drum machines with no definition. Maybe I don't get the odd little words Mark sings in the middle (I always thought it was COCOA PUFFS COCOA PUFFS THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING and maybe it would be better off if those were the lyrics **SWIMMING THE SKY** what I heard sounds pretty cool but didn't live up to the hype I kept hearing. **PAMELA** loved it from first listen. I do not find it sexist (and this is coming from a female) and anyone who does might be missing the point of the song. Catchy, quick and doesn't stay around long enough for you to hate it **HALFWRITTEN SONGS** lives up to its name. Mark should have written the other half **SWEET HOME ALA....er....CHANGING THE GUARD** whenever you steal the riff off of a classic it is sure to sound good. Many people don't know Can't Touch This and Men in Black don't just sample. They steal **TAKE MY HAND** waterdowned to the point of drowning (IMHO) **RESUPPLY** nice lyrics. Needs a song to match **BITTER MOON** best track on album. Hands down **LOVE WARS** the other best track **IF I HAD SOMETHING** Nice vocals by Mark. Lyrics a tad stale. Sound nice addition to album I also think that Phil is better with lyrics than Boon. I just thought that Mark would have more to offer than this. Kista ------------------------------ Subject: now if you want a really GOOD album... From: Wutsupg @ aol.com Date: Thu, 22 Oct 1998 12:28:48 EDT Hi again, There was a band in the 1980s called Bourgeois Tagg. Does anyone remember them? Well the "tagg" part of the band is a guy named Larry Tagg. Anyway he had released two solo albums in the last 4 years which I think everyone here would love. This is what Larry Tagg and Level 42 have in common: A lead singer whose voice so rich and unique it makes you feel he means every word and you get the impression he is singing just for you Amazing bass playing (performed by Larry Tagg) Every song on the album is a gem Lyrics that come off like poetry Music crafted in a style like no one else putting out music today and NO ONE KNOWS WHO THE HECK THEY ARE!!!! I think Larry gives Phil and Boon a run for their money on lyrics. Take a look at a sample of one of his songs posted on his website Make a Map of You . While you are there take a look around. He sells the cds himself and he autographs each one to you. These are a must in anyone's collection. Truly the best music you are not listening to. So to my fellow digesters, take a chance on this guy. You will not be disappointed. A friend of mine introduced me to him this year and I have been trying to get the word out. Some browsers will support some audio clips Larry has playing with the lyrics. You'll thank me. (IMHO) I bring all of this up after slamming Mark's album to at least offer some good news. -K ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V98 #288 From: "Andre Huijts" Date: Thu, 22 Oct 1998 13:53:05 +0200 Cliff Barua wrote about European versus USA/Canada radio. Indeed I also (like any other European would) noticed the radio stations in the US, when I was over there last summer. When we stayed at our not-so-fancy (but cheap, hey I _am_ Dutch)) hotel in NYC, some R&B station was on constantly. I liked the music since I'm a funk-man (hi Lolita !). However, if you only get to listen to one kind of music it becomes a bit of a bore. Of course we didn't spend very much time at the hotel, but I still noticed. Then later in the week we stayed with my family who live in Medford near Boston. When we were driving in my cousin's car, I first didn't really notice, but then I figured that every song I heared on the Radio station he had tuned to was white-only artists. I am posstive my cous' is no racist, I just think it is what you are "used" to and get grown-up with. There is a very strong Level 42 link here: If there was ever a band to be screwed by this radio system, it was Level 42 ! However, "formatted" radio stations seem to gain popularity in Europe as well. You may not have noticed them too much during your holidays since they usualy have limited conventional radio frequencies and operate on satelite links primarely. In Western Europe almost everyone has cable TV/Radio with many "satelite" TV/Radio stations. In fact the most popular station in Holland now is such a station called Skyradio, which mainly plays _VERY_ middle of the road stuff, so boring, your brains pop out if you listen to it too long.....This station doesn;t use DJs, but a computer selects the records played !!! YUGH ! And when some song is very popular (like the lastest Celine Dion or Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston rubbish) it gets played EVERY hour ! It's like a coffee machine, you hit the button, and you know what you get, It's always the same.It never surprises. Groetjes, Andre ------------------------------ Subject: War of the Worlds ! ! ! Well I may have complained a bit too early about poor promotion for Mark, because my good friend Henri just rang me up again to tell me Mark WILL APPEAR LIVE ON DUTCH TV FRIDAY NIGHT ! ! ! ! YES ! YES ! YES !! Just as we have come over his radio appearance we will get another great Mark performance and on TV _AND_ LIVE ! ! ! He will perform in the program "De Heeren van Amstel Live !" (Yes it _is_ sponsored by the beerbrand). Date: Friday october 23. Time: 22.45 hrs. Station: RTL-4 This station can be received via satelite all over Europe, but I'm affraid you'll need some special decoder for it.......... However (almost) all Dutchies have it on cable SO SET THOSE VCRs AGAIN LADIES AND GENTLEMEN ! ! ! Henri saw a small part (a promo clip) of the program, and Mark will perform Lessons In Love with the leadsinger of Blof (actualy there should be a slash through the letter o). This is a very popular Dutch band at the moment, and the guy is an excellent singer. I heard them perform live a couple of weeks ago in Rotterdam. The band actualy surprised me, they played excelent ! Something more......Amstel beer is a brand of Heineken......and who was the sponsor of the Night Of The Proms again ???? Righ there you go ! Live is simple and beautiful sometimes.... :) ! Something else: This afternoon I watched a (normaly very dull) afternoon show. Our Dutch readers will know the show it's with Jos Brink. normally I can't (or wouldn't) watch it, but I saw that Bart Peeters, the guy who hosts Lalalalive (and the NOTP too) was there as a guest. I hoped I might see some clip from the program with Mark. They did show a clip but it wasn't with Mark. However Mark and Level 42 were mentioned: I will give a small and probably very incomplete transcription of part of the interview: Jos: "Bart, how comes your show Lalalalive is so very popular ?" Bart: " I don't really know, but it must be something that we only do everything live, and that we have guests who are very well able to perform live, We only have guests we deeply respect for their musical abilities. And of course we always have the guests do something "strange" or something that is not on their usual "repertoire". Like Mark King from Level 42, you remember him Jos, he was on your "Wedden dat...." show..." Jos nods his head, and Bart is playing air-bass while he talks about Mark. Bart goes on: "....this guy actualy sings "Poesie mauw" in Dutch live on our show !!! Mark has a Dutch wife/girlfriend (fill in either) and she has learned him this song to sing for his daugther". Now is that nice or what...! ! ! So Arjan, you did see it right that Mark will sing in Dutch !!! For those not knowing the worldwide hit "Poesie Mauw": this is a very old Dutch child's song about a cat. It will be hilarious ! ! ! And in a way very sweet too...... If you would like to have the lyrics, feel free to mail me ! :) ! Good times are here my Dutch Level friends........! I hope all you yanks don't get too envy. I think we Dutch fans don't realise we are pretty damn lucky to have all this attention on radio and TV for Mark, but then again: Holland has always been Level 42 friendly. I never get weird reactions when I say I like Level 42. Most people seem to like their music over here or at least appreceate Mark's bass playing. Tell you what, I have installed the trumpet intro of HIMH on my PC at work, and everytime I get mail (or reboot) it will play. After a couple of plays, all my colleagues were going: Tatatatatatataaaaa.......it's so catchy ! Now I still have to sample the last bit of "The Machine Stops" for whenever the damn thing crashes, or when I shut it down......however my SITL CD has bad scratches at the last part......and I'm not going to replace it until the re-issues are here ! Now, I must go ! ! ! Ah, yeah, please don't mail me at my work address the coming week, since I will be on holiday. The double bass line (synth and electric bass) just muddles it, which is criminal coming from L42. The space-age remix that appears on "Level 42: The Remixes" (Polydor) rocks, though -- of course, since the bass is Mark only. My tuppence... From: "Mr Pink" Date: Wed, 21 Oct 1998 19:42:12 +0100 Hi, Having been sent on a guilt trip about becomming anonymous, which was richly deserved, I thought I'd post some thoughts about One Man. I can't say I was very impressed at first. I'd heard Pamela and Changing of the Guard before, and it was almost purely the fact that I loved changing of the Guard and the knowlege of it being at the end of the CD that kept me listening. The song that really made me squirm was Half Written Songs. Did anyone else struggle to remember the tune thirty seconds affter it finished?? It certainly wasn't the album I expected Mark King to release. I bought Influences back in '84 and loved it to bits. I heard the snippets of new material on 'The Pier' (I still haven't truely forgiven my friend Nick for taping Airwolf over it!!!) and expected One Man to loosely resemble that. A lot of journalists have written off Level 42 - both before and after the break up (did anyone see that double page piss take in the Lee and Herring book??) and I gather Mark King wanted to make an album which did not sound like a Level 42 spin off. I've grown to love many of the songs on One Man. I still like Pamela (contraversial I know) - and if you want to really know what it's about ask Lisa Harding (she posted yesterday - sorry to drop you in it Lisa! And sorry this is an obvious name drop!!). Love Wars and Resupply are excellent songs too. And again, Changing of the Guard still sends a shiver up my spine. My only critisism of the album at this stage is the variable sound quality and distortion in places (it can't all be deliberate!). Hey, no problem. For all I know it may be everyone else's favorite song, I just happened to be listening to it 2 or 3 times in a row the other day and I decided that there was absolutely nothing in it that excited me (unusual for a L42 song, I can't think of one other like that). And that cheeseball "now I know you care!" tagline kept inching my finger closer to the skip button. Actually, minus that this might be a song I would sing along to; it just hits that break every time around and I lose it. But that's just one man's opinion, it absolutely does not have to be everybody else's (nor is it likely to be!). I just wanted to see what kind of response I would get, and if anyone else thought the same. I'm VERY pleased and relieved that no flames shot in my direction, and that I was not reduced to a small pile of ash sitting in front of my computer. ;^) -> Sean: Absolutely I DO NOT want you to not make a MIDI file of 2HC just because I said I didn't like it!!! Your friend loads the CD and imbarks upon playing the first twenty seconds of each track, fowarding through the rest of it pausing momentarily to hear five seconds of music before skipping to the next. You just *know* that they'd love it if only they gave it a chance... People have refered to "The Level 42 Effect" meaning that they didn't like the song or the album the first time around. The thing is they've just been screwed for sixteen of your United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Pounds Sterling to buy the CD and so were morally compelled to listen to it several times. At this point it's grown on you to the point that you think it's really good. In my personal experience some of my most favourite albums I didn't like the first or even second times I played them. I'm also a massive Bjork fan and I took the p*ss out of my friend for buying Post and didn't like it when I heard it. He came over again a few weeks later and played it again - and this time it just clicked and now I'm as mad as cheese about her. Anyway, getting to the point, there must be a word to describe this phenomena: the phenomena of dismissing a piece of music because you don't give yourself the opportunity to listen to it when you would probably have liked it if you'd bought it, or had taken more time over it. This word is "Kibbage". "Kibbage" is the reason why bands like Level 42 had virtually the same audience from 1985 to 1994. It is also the reason why nobody but us will buy One Man. Kibbage is indeed frustrating. This word may be made up but then I don't have any influence on what goes into the Oxford English Dictionary. A good thing you might say...:) David. ps. If anyone has a better word feel free to say so, although please note that "Bollocks" is not a valid substitute. ............................................................................ ................. ** David Goodall **** david @ sandstorm.demon.co.uk ------------------------------ Subject: Observations - I've had a few From: ERICWHE01 @ aol.com Date: Thu, 22 Oct 1998 20:05:35 EDT Hello Level World, I've been on the Digest for a few months now, and I thought I'd come out of the shadows and share my thoughts of the digest to you all. I'm no sociology or psychology graduate, but there does seem to be clear pigeonholes that other digesters fit into : 1) The Reluctant Streakers - You know who you are.....You 'Come out' once, exhibit your wares, then run back to anonimity never to be seen or heard of again....a disease of new people to the digest. 2) The Real Insiders - They come onto the digest, give enough information to get you interested (or just before it gets to slander) then pull the carrot away and leave you in the cold......Loz, you're breaking my heart man (In the professional sense of course)...tell me more about Phil and the split... 3) The Drum Debate - Is Phil better ? Is Gary better ? Who gives a f@*$ , they both sounded good to me. 4) The Proclaimers - No, not a crap scottish pop cloning experiment, but those digesters who go about the world asking famous muso's what they think of Level 42. They then proclaim on the digest all of those good comments people may have said. It's almost as though they are trying to write an essay entitled "What was Level 42's influence on the Pop World ?". Please discuss giving examples of these influences. 5) The Life and Death Crew - These are the fanatics who will collect anything by the band or band members. They have every damn recording or know of its existance and whereabouts. The will pay mountains of dosh to get their hands on rare remixes or promo items. If Mark King farted on tape, they'd ask for the Shep Pettibone remix, that's how much it would mean to them. By the way guys, don't try making love with '88' on, you'd be dead by the fourth bar. 6) The Muso's - They play the songs incessantly and record onto tape in their lonely bedrooms with midi keyboards or bass guitars. They can tell you the musical worth of this riff or that bridge and can even tell you what direction Mark King was facing whilst playing Dune tune...quite amazing. 7) Old and New Levellers - There's a clear split of opinion here..There should be seperate digests for the Gould and post-Gould era. 8) The "I Love EVERYTHING they've done" brigade. - This surely can only be true of about 99% of the group's work. If anyone is happy in the knowledge that the video to the Chant has Begun is in anyway an artistic treasure, then feel free to watch the next performance of Riverdance or get a ringside seat to the next breeding displays of the pigeons in Trafalgar Square. To the rest of the normal world, cringe at the first 10 seconds and then fast forward. 9) The Gossip Mongers - Those digesters who really need to know the nitty- gritty about band members personal lives. Famous Gossip monger quotes include "Is Mike Gay ?", "Is that Mike's daughter on the Children Say Video ?" (Well it can't be if he's gay...), who's sleeping with who..., I've heard a rumour that..., blah,blah,blah.....Who gives a shit. 10) The Ladies - A frequent comment is that they fancy Mark King......mmm, can't really comment on that one, except to say that they must have had their eyes shut on the 'Staring at the Sun' tour. Those jackets, the hair..yuk 11) The Silent Majority - Those digesters who enjoy reading about the group and look forward to the next days installment. They sit at the computer wanting to say something , but don't want to look stupid so don't say anything at all. Every day, you'll get jibes from your mates for liking an "80's" band, and you get incredibly pissed off in record shops looking under "The Levellers" tab to see if any L42 albums have been misplaced or when the Shop assistant laughs when you ask for an album. It's easier to buy condoms. You also think you can sing all the parts to all the songs. It's okay in the car, but when a L42 song comes on the office radio you get loud, excited and sing all the Mike Lindup bits out of key. You're also the World's best air bass guitarist, best known for your renditions of SAY,88, Mr Pink and the Essential. You're full of quotes from albums and videos, (who's got a nice balloon then, come on Philip you can tell me, the Man on the Bass...etc), and spend half an hour explaining the "Drums Stop. Very Bad, Very Bad" joke to the rest of the pub when it took a minute to tell it. You're sick of the fanatics (cause you ain't got enough money to buy all the remixes) but you wish you were one. Anyway, enough of this. I'll probably have offended some of you, and I'll probably have my subscription cancelled. But, I thought I'd try and bring into perspective what we're really like....I'm awaiting the flak, and have built the bunker in readyness. See you on the other side. My initial reaction is that is sounds a bit, for want of a better word, cluttered, although I've yet to bring it to work to listen on some decent monitors. Any other opinions? Where's this Britfest then? L x "I don't want to do any work I don't want to do any work I've been up since 6 and I don't want to do any work Do you follow me? I saw a producer getting in his car I said take me home, it's not that far, He said you need to get some funds so get some work done" (okay I know it's corny) ------------------------------ Subject: Jaydee information page From: "david jacobs" Date: Fri, 23 Oct 1998 01:32:24 PDT Peoples!
