Well, I went one step further : In Norwich on Saturday, I visited HMV and Virgin. Both had about 8-9 copies of One Man. Understandably, the shop had them in the Rock/Pop section under 'K'. This is fine if you know what you want i.e. you know who Mark King is and you know he has a record out. The chances of coming across it by chance though is failry remote (unless you want a KD Lang or Kula Shaker CD). How is MK likely to attract mass audience without promotion ??? Here's how...... You grab all but one of the One Man CD's and you casually walk to the area of the store where they display the chart stuff. Pick a number from 1 to 5 and remove ALL CD's from that chart position replacing with One Man. Bob's Your Uncle, Fanny's Your Aunt (that'll confuse our cousins !). The chart display is often in the most prominent position in the store AND it's where most people hang out. Generally chart postions 1 to 5 are at eye level and so MK gets good promotion ! People look at the CD and think "Hey, Mark King, mmm at number 2 in the charts, must be a good album, I will buy it ". They do so, get it home and realise IT IS a good album !!! If any people wonder why you are rearranging the stock, they get curious and start looking at what you're putting up. No members of staff seem to notice - I did it in HMV and when I went back 1.5 hours later, the CD's were still there at number 2 AND there were four less than before !!! I suppose I'll sit back and wait for the flak about cheating, conning people etc. etc. etc. But I've got a clear conscience - I'm just educating folk ! I urge you to go to your local record stores and do the same - believe me it works ! That's All -Tom ------------------------------ Subject: Bitter Moon is still so fresh,Mark forgot the words... From: "Huijts, Andre SSI-TSEA-222" Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 13:13:55 +0200 Did anyone else notice the lyrical mistake Mark made during the recording of Bitter Moon for the BBC ???? I forgot who made these excellent MP3's available, but I thank you very much indeed ! ! ! A joy to hear...! Groetjes, Andre ------------------------------ Subject: SUN GOES DOWN 98 - PUT BACK 1 WEEK From: "dean osborn" Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 05:40:05 PDT HI FOLKS......just to let you all know, if you haven't found out yet, that SUN GOES DOWN 98 has been put back a week (UK release) to monday 19.10.98. Also. if you can get hold of a copy of the bitter moon cassette get as many as you can as they are proving to be extremely rare. i bought 3 copies from virgin after i'd already ordered one from hmv but hmv can't seem to get hold of it as it is out of stock somewhere. if you get one sealed (as virgin have done them) try and keep them that way as that will only add to their potential value in years to come, especially as they were not available in so many places. now a plea again.....!! sorry....does anyone have a copy of mike lindup's spirit is free cd single they would be willing to sell me please ?......my collection is sobbing in a dark corner until this arrives......many thanks p.s winston walker....if you are reading can you e-mail me please on dean_osborn @ hotmail.com... see you all............ dean ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Level 42 at number 2!! NOVEMBER 14, 1998 Saturday Location: MY HOUSE Time: 3:00pm-Whenever the music dies or lager runs out! If you need directions to my house if you live in the metroplex, drop me a line and I will pass along very simple driving directions. If you are flying in, let me know so I can pick you up at the airport. If you are flying in you will want to fly into DFW Int'l Airport, not Dallas Love Field if you can avoid it. That means that you cannot fly Southwest Airlines into DFW Int'l, I reccomend American, Delta, and the like. Look forward to seeing ALL of you from the two previous and some new faces as well, there will be plenty of food, beer, music, music, and a HUGE SURPRISE!!!!!! Bring your camera and videocamera this will be for keeps!!! Best and Kind Regards!!! I have been somewhat disappointed with their later work & had given up on liking anything else from them. Thanks for proving me wrong! -r ------------------------------ Subject: Legends of Bass (IMHO!) From: Chris Staunton Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 11:32:03 -0400 Jeez all this "One Man" raving, while perfectly understandable, is soooo annoying to this po' American fan. It's like, "There behind the glass is a real blade of grass, be careful as you pass, move along, move along..." I can't afford to import it at the rates these blasted online rip-off joints are asking. Very frustrating. I have decided not to read any more posts that begin, "Well I finally got round to the store for my reserved copy of OM and it's the dog's bollocks!!!!" Harumpf. Someone brought up an influential bass player list, so of course I had to respond in kind. Of course I can only skim the surface, but I felt like giving it a try anyway! These are guys whose stuff I both dig AND can play: Mark King (duh!) Ralph Armstrong Chris Squire Francis Rocco Prestia Leland Sklar Tony Levin These guys I love, but am forever destined to just watch in amazement: Gary Willis John Pattitucci Jimmy Haslip the ubiquitous Jaco And of course, the early influences: John Paul Jones Geddy Lee Sting Put all that together and what do you get? A bass player who can't find a band, unfortuanately. Experimental Funk/Pop bassists aren't geting much work in Delaware right now. If there's a bright musical center to this country, I'm in the state that's the farthest from it. ------------------------------- Chris Staunton chriss @ pcsupplies.com ...gotta get back to BASSics... ------------------------------- ------------------------------ Subject: BM in Seattle From: Daniel James Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 10:14:43 -0700 (PDT) Okay all you Seattle levelheads. Thanks for clearing out Soundwaves of all their Bitter Moon singles. I've already got my copy (thanks again Chris!!!!!) but I was trying to pick up another copy for a friend in San Francisco whom I'm gonna be visiting this weekend and they were all out. :) They said they were actually impressed with how many copies sold and will be getting more in by Wednesday. No copies of "One Man" for a few weeks however. ------------------------------ Subject: Alan Partridge / World Machine From: Bilal42 @ aol.com Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 18:00:57 EDT Its strange, I've got all the versions of World Machine (amazing album) I need, vinly, cd, ltd etc.... ...recently I came across the US version. How bizarre (as you know); it is part WM and part not; its ironic; its like it is World Machine and also it isnt, kind of like a Ladyboy... I'm an expat (as if you couldn't tell from my email address) - originally from Brighton and I've lived in Sydney for eleven years. When I first arrived in Oz, there were two things I had trouble getting used to: 1. A sarnie over here is referred to as a 'sambo'. 2. The biggest selling brand of cheese here is called 'Coon'. Go figure, as they say. Cheers........Mike (The Sydney City Milkman) P.S. It's my 36th the day before the King's 40th. P.P.S. Well just to add to the confusion, I checked out the Virgin Megastore near my house yesterday (that's right, a *megastore*), and guess what? No Mark King at all. Period. Not in Singles, Imports, Jazz, Rock, etc. I asked a girl at the counter about it, and not only had she never heard of it (not surprising) but it wasn't in their book for upcoming singles, albums or imports (surprising). So I'm probably S.O.L with my Virgin megastore...which one did you go to, Bilal? BTW, if you go to http://www.gemm.com, they have One Man listed with at least three different places. I'm hoping to find it locally before I order from the internet, though. *sigh*, Zak Nilsson Xaqtly Music http://www.xaqtly.com "Carpe Canum" (Seize the Dog) ------------------------------ Subject: SNL Appearance From: Colin Campbell Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 23:33:18 -0700 According to a schedule from Comedy Central, Level 42's appearance on Saturday Night Live is scheduled to be rebroadcast TUESDAY at 3:00pm (Eastern and Pacific, if your cable system shows the West Coast feed ... ) Roll those VCR's if you've never seen it!
