Bilal42 ------------------------------ Subject: 'One Man' From: "Green, Laurence F" Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 11:51:00 +0100 Who ever it was who said that 'one Man' was not like a Level 42 album, take that chap outside and................ Blimey, go and listen to more level 42 albums. I can say this with conviction now, people have been mentioning the fact that the cover says Level 42's Mark King and he should have perhaps dropped the Level 42's. Well he should really have dropped the 's Mark King because in my opinion this album is Level 42. With all due respect to Mike, the key ingredient to any Level 42 song is lyrics by a Gould and music by King (for a true song you need additions by Lindup and Badarou) and that is exactly what One Man provides. OK, there are a few exceptions, namely, 'Pamela' which is basically a mid album interlude and the track 'One Man' itself which is unlike any Level 42 track. Other than that the album is 'Pure Level 42' classic, smooth, what more can I say. It's both a progression and a re-discovery of old roots (Standing In The Light True Colours). If I had to describe the sound of the album as I have done in Word Machine issue, it's a cross between Forever Now and Standing in The Light. In agreement with what someone said yesterday, and I have said this to Mark myself, in the end it won't matter to us fans really wether it does well commercially or not, the main thing for us will be that we will enjoy it immensely and we will use the as the new standard by which to judge Level 42 albums. Fantastic lyrics, fantastic melodies. Chorouses like off World Machine, (I'm thinking of It's Not The Same For Us, Good Man in A Storm) and mind blowing ballads. I defy anyone to sit down, relax, put your stereo on full blast and play, 'Swimming With The Sky' and not be completely moved. I won't go through each track and spoil it, just to say that there are some classics there. Some will take a few listens, some will hit you straight away (I find I only truly appreciate a song when I've memorised the lyrics). But to sum up, Level 42 all the way, but what did we expect, it's what Mark and Boon are best at! Mark mentioned AGAIN on Radio 2 that Level 42 was not dead and burried as he seems to be doing more and more nowdays. So lets just sit back and wait. I found this page with some info (in German) about Mark, upcoming tour info (yes he will be featured on the Nokia NOTP in Germany also). http://www.edel.de/german/products/00001889.htm You can also listen to RealAudioclips of Bitter Moon, One Man and Take My Hand as well as download a Quicktimeclip of the BM video. Have fun! Lars p.s. I will now go and bug the people at Edel records in Sweden. I'll ask why NONE of the records shops in Stockholm carry Mark's new stuff - nor has even heard of them. I have contacted some musicians from the digest (Rebecca Johnson, etc.) and I'm waiting for their answers... Message for my fans: "Yes, I will play on this CD!" So if you're interested to be included in this project contact me!!! I want one or two songs or instrumentals on DAT with the story of the covers etc. The final CD will be really great. GUARANTEED! Speak to you later... Morgan. http://level42.com ------------------------------ Subject: Forever Now (Resergence), RITF, Early Tapes, CD video From: "WHATSUPDOC" Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 06:44:59 -0600 I went to several local record shops recently and found several Level 42 things. The Mesa AZ Tower Records has a new copy of the Forever Now Resergence version and someone had written that they had a hard time finding it. I would be willing to purchase it for the one who was looking for it if you send me enough to cover the cost of the disc and postage. I also found an import copy of RITF used (said made in Germany). I have the USA pressing-does anyone know if there is any difference in any of the tracks? They appear to be exactly the same as the US version. I also found in another used store a copy of the Early Tapes, which can be hard to find and rather expensive as an import. If anyone wants this I can also purchase it and send it to anyone who would cover it's cost and postage. (I think it was $6.99 plus $3 for postage). Anyone interested can e-mail me directly. If I get bombarded with requests, these will go to the first one who contacts me! Loz had written that It's Over was released as a CD video. Don't you mean Somthing About You? I have a copy of the CD Video of that song which features the video of SAY and three remixes of SAY (SISA mix, Coup D'etat version and Shep Pettibone remix). CD videos had a short life. They were playable on laserdisc players for the video part and the three remixes would play in any CD player or the laserdisc player and were audio only. I guess that format didn't go over too well-it seemed to disappear rather quickly. I have never seen It's Over on CD Video. Does anyone know if it was released in that format, or has LOZ just remembered it incorrectly? Also, thanks Rizvan and Spaldo for your comments about My Fathers Shoes! It's an awesome song with an awesome message! There are several other songs with great lyrical meaning in the Level 42 archives. Go back and listen to People, Children Say and With a Little Love. These also have great lyrics! tcoy Steve ------------------------------ Subject: Writing about "One Man" to Eagle Rock, and much more From: "Sean D. Green" Date: Fri, 02 Oct 1998 08:53:20 -0500 Friends, After finishing the letter I wrote to Eagle Rock Records, I thought - Hey, wouldn't it be good to write the local radio stations and let them know about the upcoming release? Yeppers!!! So...make note and contact your local radio station managers about this release. Get their contact information and request that they get a copy of the CD (if available) and play some of it on the air. Obviously, the only thing that would hold them up would be the availability of the CD, and that will be in the hands of Eagle Rock Records. Come on people, show your 'fan-ship' and write your letters!!! Mark's success for this CD is really counting on a show of hands. It's up to us to make this a greater possibility. It seems to me (I only play air-bass, so I'm no expert) that the bass-line of that song isn't very simple... I think it's a very specific combination of playing chords, slapping and finger-style-playing, all in one song. Especially the instrumental break is an extremely fast played finger-style part. Can any of the bass-players comment? I can share the Lessons in Love experience: that song is also very hard on the air-bass... I cannot sit idly by letting him get away with it! Over the years Fender instruments have proven themselves to be appropriate for recording. The Fender Jazz Bass has a deep, smooth, satisfying tone. You cannot get this from many of the expensive high tech basses on the market. When you plug it into a mixer, little equalization is needed because the tone you get is so good. No mess and no fuss. In my experience the Jazz Bass has also been ideal for slapping. The strings are far apart from each other. The snaps you get from the D and G string sound brilliant, but also have enough low frequency that their tone is powerful. Again, many of the high tech basses cannot get this. But don't just bass this on my experience. Bass monsters like Mark King, Geddy Lee, Marcus Miller, Rocco Prestia and Jaco Pastorious used Fenders late in their bass playing career. After having tried all kinds of fancy stuff on the market, why do these veterans come back to Fender? It comes down to three things; tone, reliability and ease of use. Listen to the deep bass tone on 'Bitter Moon'. Sweet and satisfying isn't it? Also, listen to the clarity of the bass tone on the album 'Test for Echo' from Rush. Fender satisfies. Don, what is it that put a bad taste in your mouth about Fender? Market perceptions can be powerful. Rid yourself of this negative perception and listen to the tone. Have you had one bad experience? Bye for now, Greg ------------------------------ Subject: L42 limericks, tapes, etc From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 14:03:03 EDT Hey Mr. Goodall, nice job with the L42 limerick! Hey Byron, I do believe Mark has LED's on his new bass. As a matter of fact, I think you can see them on Bilal's page. He has some video footage of Mark playing on VH1. Kara, welcome back. It's been quite some time. Mikey asked about you yesterday. Lisa, still waiting for that video tape, so consider this a slight nudge! Big thanks to Mark Tweedale for the live versions of Bittermoon and Love Wars. much appreciated. Also, thanks to Emikatie for the tape of Living It Up '98. I'm still physically sick from listening to the 'Tin Tin' remix of the same. Loz, you were dead on with your review of this track. It has NOTHING to do with the song at all. It's basically a totally unrelated music track, with a half second MK vocal sample. It's so small u can't even make out what it is. I do like the remix with Omar, but it desparately needs a bass line, and some guitar. Regarding live band audio tapes. I've made a bunch of copies of concert tapes for digest members, over the years. Some of the tapes are shows that I've personally recorded, and most are tapes other digest members have been kind enough to trade me, or send for free. Recently I've found out that some folks that I have sent free tapes too, have been selling these tapes to other digest members. While I don't expect folks to come out of their pocket, and send tapes for nothing, cost of tape, and shipping notwithstanding, please don't try and make a profit from these things. (and I'm NOT accusing anyone of doing so) Anyway, enough of that noise. Hey, goodluck to everyone in Europe! Let's hope you can all find a copy of 'One Man' on Monday. The Flecktones did a "Rhythm Workshop" a couple years back > through the OTS. He had mentioned Mark King as a great bass player, > though he admitted he hadn't really heard much of his stuff. It's my understanding that Victor Wooten is counted among the lucky owners of AYGB! I can't recall who, off the top of my head, gave him a copy, but I'm now certian that Vic's heard a bit of it. Victor's solo album was released a few weeks ago. While I did buy a copy for one of my friends on his birthday, I haven't yet had a chance to hear it. Anyone want to give us the low down? And shifting gears. . . After my brief hiatus (which seemed like an eternity) from the digest, nay the Internet as a whole, I'm back online. For those of you who were wondering, I'm newly employed with KPMG Peat Marwick, and travelling my butt off. As I've mentioned to the people that have asked, I'm no longer making AYGB or P&P- partly because the majority of the music is being re-released (anyone know when the new discs are scheduled to come out?), and partly because I haven't seen my desktop computer in a month, and don't plan on seeing it for another couple! To the people who's payment came in late, please understand that it's going to take me some time to get everything set up to get your discs out to you; please be patient, as there's nothing I can do to remedy this. And to everyone wondering about the third disc in the series, as soon as JohnV, myself, and the rest of the crew can get some time, we'll try to figure out what will come next. And to all the Dallas Levelheads- I'll give you a shoutout when I know I'll be in town for a weekend. BTW, when is Winston coming? TCOY'allselves. Also appreciate the praise given so far to "True Colours." In my mind, it was a great setup for the L42 sound we came to love in "World Machine," and slightly funkier too. ("True Believers" is truly punk soul.) Maybe the reason it didn't do as well as "Standing In the Light" is that the best tracks were buried in side 2.) Idea: Since L42 crosses so many boundaries, has there ever been a survey on the Digest about "Best L42 Funk Song," "Best L42 Pop Song," "Best L42 Rock-ish Song)?" Or would there be too many instances where the song would end up in more than one category? Just asking. The Duke "...brotherhood is not so wild a dream as those who profit by postponing it pretend."
