Let's shoot for memorial weekend in London. What say the rest of you? yeah or nay? Like in Vegas, I'm sure we can trouble to get in to!! Plus, I know Lolita is probably the 'ultimate' vacation planner, so perhaps she will take the bull by the horns, and suggest some things to do. I'm looking forward to meetin many of the 'euro' fans on the digest as well. Too bad. You know, the exact same thing could be said of Mike Lindup, with his wacky little dances, etc. Fortunately, most of us can look beyond that stuff to see him for the wonderfully talented musician he is. Eccentricity often goes hand in hand with genius - this is not news. Frankly, I'm surprised to see that so many Digesters have revealed themselves to be dork-bigots! ;o) Z. ------------------------------ Subject: You know you'd still listen!! From: "Andrew Baize" Date: Fri, 30 Jan 1998 12:58:07 -0600 In response to a lot of your lists of songs that are your least favorites (which Chinese Way seems to be the least liked from everyone), we all know that if L42 came out with a set list (which is the list of songs that they would perform live) that was comprised of all your least favorites, you all would be the first ones in line to still see their concert!! In other words, although you all may be valid in your tastes or preferences, I wanted to clarify that we would still be oh-so thankful for seeing them perform, period! Also, a small request...What does Mark King say at the end of "Heaven in my Hands" and what does he say during "Something About You" Live version when they stop the instruments and sing "solo" (I don't know what you call it), it starts out: "Something 'bout the way you are, Can't go back we've gone too far....etc., etc. You guys are still awesome! Thanks always to you Eric for maintaining the Digest. Andrew ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V98 #21 and a morbid thread request! From: "Mad Monk" Date: Fri, 30 Jan 1998 19:01:29 -0000 >POA: You know, I can't think of one. Perhaps the most perfect album ever. >Well... Well Chuck, I gotta agree with you. Classy Instrumentals, Almost throat cutting ballads, Funky fretwork.... the tops. I think SITL would have been pushing it if the production/recording quality? was sweeter. The 12" of Out of Sight, Out of Mind sounds so much crisper. On the throat cutting issue, Why were most of the slow ballads about the sadder aspects of relationships and not more positive (Leaving Me Now, Why are you Leaving, It,s Over) They are all excellent tunes to smooch to but for the consistency of the lyrical meaning. A nice happy "lurve" groove would have made a welcome change (and given wife and I something memorable to waddle to at our wedding 9 years ago, had to make do with Phil Collins).......... Oh yeah, and a suggestion for a new thread. I was recently attending the funeral of a friend who insisted that "Drive" by The Cars be played, which got me thinking......what L42 track would most suit me personally as a fitting epitath? In the end I came up with "Good Man in a Storm" from WM.....the lyrics ring a loud bell with me and the tune is also spine-tingly haunting......shame I won't get to hear it at the service. Any more? ******************************************************* "Dis-information......That we take for the truth" Mad Monk mad.monk @ mcmail.com **************************************** ------------------------------ Subject: I dont normally write a subject here From: "LOZ Green" Date: Fri, 30 Jan 1998 19:43:35 -0000 Is there going to be a UK international Level Fest? I hope so, I would be straight there, neat. ANyway all you discographically insane people, I now HAVE Love Meeting Love Dazz 5 on CLEAR VINYL. I also have the story behind it. Another band was having its songs pressed onto clear vinyl and at the end of the run they had a bit of the goo left, so a technician put it in the Love Meeting Love press and made between 10-20 copies. I wont tell you how much I paid, but it looks great with the blue and yellow label in the middle, neat. Also I have an important discographical addition. A close Level 42 style collegue of mine has recently acquired a 7" of Love Meeting Loe ON THE ELITE LABEL, but before all you addicts start falling over yourselves, it is an acetate (1 sided) and the single was not commercially released by Elite as a 7". The Best news of all is that the mix is around 20 seconds longer than the Polydor 7" with the extra stuff being an extended sax solo at the end (go for it Boon). On another nice note, my close friend margret has, Strategy, The Strategy master tapes (yes, the ones you can see in one of the fan club newsletters), the Sandstorm acetate, and Dazz 4, the normal sandstorm. In issue 1 of my fanzine Im going to do an exhaustive discography of Early Tapes related material, but dont mail me, the fanzine is way off. I have lined up interviews with 1) for definate, Boon, Andy Sojka, Crockford 2) Perhaps Mark, Jakko Jaksyxzyx (whatever). So it should be neat. Also the discography will have lots of pictures of like, dazz 4, dazz 4 acetate, dazz5, dazz5 promo, dazz 5 acetate, dazz 5 clear vinyl, Lone Meeting Love 7" elite acetate, strategy (new, nice, quality photos), strategy master tapes, information on TAPE 2, the tape the band didnt like and John Gould possibly still has (he's in New Zealand). On to the Polydor releases, with promos and acetates of course, through the album Early Tapes in its various forms so it should be a perfect discography in every respect (only for early tapes though, its the easiest because of the lack of foreign stuff). These are just ideas at the moment, and as I say, dont think why is he not just putting all this stuff on the internet, the reason is that there are so many UK fans and no way of keeping them together, like we have the digest its easy, but the majority of Level 42 fans as big or small as ourseleves have no means of interaction and I intend to try and redress that balance, but the digesters and the web pages will be part of it anyway. News. Expect the new Greates Hits album in April, in the UK, with hits from Polydor and RCA (Hits from RCA?). Followed by, or accompanied by, however you want to look at it, up to 2 singles, I hear a rumour that the sinles have been decided and handed out to top DJ's for remix idea, so what were probably looking at is something like, Lessons In Love remix 98, nice. Then the repackaged albums are on their way 1 by one with the added stuff, and possibly then a rarities CD with the stuff that couldnt fit on the album reissues. Still no one wanted my fan club magazines for a trade? While Im rambling on, please someone help me get in touch with Joe Parrington (visions of people turning pale and passing out) because I sent him a book and it cost like, a ton and he never replied or sent me what he promised. Mind you, having said that and not being one to give myself a bad name, but I owe lars (one of the lars'es) a tape and I havent forgot, when he gets it (finally) it will be well worth it I promise, think of it like haveing some credit in an old bank account:-) Now then, you'll have noticed that Im rambling on like a man possessed, but Ive just started the new semester and things are fairly quiet, but when I start for real I may go silent again, but never fear, I will return, and in greater numbers, and thats when Ill start doing 'Word Machine', the fanzine, or as I prefer to call it, a magazine about Level 42, as fanzine sounds a bit tacky, although it might actually be a bit tackky, well, you know what I mean, it wont be like TIME magazine or national geographic because Im doing it on my PC, but its a neat PC, 4.2 GB. 32 Meg, 18X CD etc. Anyway, Ill need everyones help, like especially with the discography, and DONT worry, I will quote and credit every source as Lazlos excellent discography has been extremely useful so far, though Im sure everyone will be amazed at the amount of stuff out there, and there is more besides Im sure. She's getting a lot of airplay on the jazz station and let me tell you, from what I've heard so far, she has got MAD SKILLS! So can't wait to check her out. Thanks, I would really like to get a copy of the Guaranteed concert vid. Let me know where I need to send the blank vid and the money and I 'll get it out asap. ANd finally, I guess I did ramble on a bit the other day, but I did have a lot to say. Soory 'bout that...I'm sure most of it got scrolled over anyway... I'll be in touch. Paul P.S. I've been out of school for a month and a half so I haven't been able to check the email as much. I came back to about forty digests! I just wanted to agree with Lolita about how annoying G.E. Smith is! I'm glad it's not only me. He may play guitar great (I haven't paid attention) but it seems like he THINKS he plays better than anyone in the universe with his little smug expression and theatrical facial and body movements. Ugh! I also have always found that Gresham Blues sounds like the SNL closing theme. That whole moderate 6/8 time thing. You all don't know how bummed I am that I can't be at the International Levelfest in London! I'm a starving student, you know? Well, maybe some of you who have pictures of me from past events can take them with so I can at least be there in image!
