The Sci-Fi channel, starting September 1st, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m., is going to air ALL of the 80 Star Trek episodes, IN ORDER, beginning with episode #1. One each night. They will be digitally remastered, and with restored original footage that was left out of syndicated rereuns in the 1970's. Each episode will be hosted by Capt. Kirk for the first showing. Later on, Mr. Spock will host a second presentation of the entire series. Interviews with original cast and crew members and guest starts will be included. Now I'll need to proceed at warp-factor speed to pick up 80 VHS blanks :-( Now, for the Level connection, I'm wondering what episode 42 will be about. The machine stops John ------------------------------ Subject: Steely Dan and the boys From: Jeff Grous Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 10:07:59 -0700 Hiya Hedz! Yes, I know, I've been lurking and lurking. I'm still very much alive and still read the Digest daily. I can't WAIT to hear Marks's new offering, I'm nutso waiting for it... Lolita said something the other day which reminded me of something. Almost since the beginning, when people have asked me what Level 42 sounded like, my favorite one-line description is, "Imagine Steely Dan meets Earth, Wind, and Fire, and you have an idea." Whaddya think? You know, Gaucho and Aja are two of my favorite records and Fagan's Nightfly and Kamakiriad are also favorite standards... awesome records! Regarding STIL: I agree that some of their best tunes are on this record. And it's not really the mix that is so bad IMO, but rather the quality of the sonics of the individial tracks, very likely on the multitrack itself. If you listen carefully, there is an inordinate amount of third-order harmonic distortion in a LOT of the parts, particularly the bass. It's as if the tape was at saturation or one of the stages in the console or some other device was at clipping. It sounds like saturation to me, however. The problem is that if THAT is the case, the sonics of the reissue will be as bad, (unless parts get re-recorded) because that cannot be fixed. Bill: Of COURSE the song is a reference to Pamela Anderson! "Engineering like no other..." On Tony Levin: He is amazing, and as has been pointed out here, has been sought out as a player for more than a few years by a zillion bands and artists. I have had the good fortune to have seen him perform several times, have lots of stuff with him playing on it and also met the man briefly at a taping for Fridays (remember that show?). I think the guy is fabulous, and have never been disappointed by him. Oh, MAN... I am dying for Markie's new record... gotta have it!! Hurry, hurry!! -Jeff BTW, if you have some time to waste, I can be found on DALnet (IRC) fairly often. Just /whois MrPink to find me, and say hello! ------------------------------ Subject: Greatest Hits & More & Guitarist From: "Andre Huijts" Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 21:00:37 +0200 I found some more info on the "Greatest Hits and more" compilation: Level 42 - Level 42 - Greatest Hits and More Stevige funkpop van Level 42! Well, mighty handy if you are new to Level42..... Anyway it seems only to be sold by a book&record club over here in Holland...and I'm not a member. I am trying to get hold of any info regarding the Heineken NOTP (I hate to give free publicity for the worst beer I ever tatsted......so I'll just call it NOTP from now on). I saw that Guitarist, the magazine which comes with the promo Pamela CD was on sale at Virgin Megastore in Rotterdam, but it was the issue before the one we are all looking for. I'll get back there tomorrow.....These publications (Guitarist and Bassist) are surprisingly hard to find in Holland. Any idea why the release keeps getting pushed back? At this point, I'm ready to take this and any future release announcements with a grain of salt. I'll just look for it when it gets here. I hate to sound perturbed by all this, but I along everyone else on here has been anticipating this release. Another thing, I was looking at a release list for the upcoming month and saw no mention of the album. Does anyone know if it is going to be a simultaneous release in the United States? I certainly hope so. It would be nice not having to order an imported copy like I did Forever Now, not that Mark's music isn't worth the price. It is definitely worth it and I'll be glad when I finally have it in hand. With much anticipation, Albert42 ------------------------------ Subject: bittermoon and pamela From: "Christien De Roo" Organization: MailCity (http://www.mailcity.com:80) Date: Mon, 31 Aug 1998 02:43:02 -0700 Hi folks, Oh no, back to work after one month holyday. I had a lots of reading. (I've internet at home too, but I didn't had the time) Firstly a happy birthday to Morgan (a bit late). (Mine was on 25 august, 27 years young). Secondly, I tried to listen to bittermoon and Pamela on the web from Carl (btw thanks Carl). but it seems there are some problems, the only thing I get are strange signs like *# (these signs are not on my keyboard) So I didn't had the chance to listen to it. We have a pentium, soundcard and speakers of course but my brother thinks that we need something else also. Are there some other digesters who have the same problem ? As a Belgian I go of course to the Night of the Proms in Antwerp. Any one who is coming too ? Now MailCity offers forwarding so you can check your MailCity messages and other e-mail all in one place.
