I am incredibly busy with my degree, only 12 weeks to go, I dont even have time to write this. I will update you on my rare track. I suspect it will be available in about 15 weeks so watch this space. Also when my degree is over I am writing 'Word Machine' a level 42 fanzine, hopefully it will be really good and we can get the band involved as Im sure at least Mark and Boon will contribute to some extent, there will alos be a full UK discography, and that means full, with everything from Elite Love Meeting Love on clear vinyl, to the Guaranteed box set, the 2 Its over CDv's, everything, yum yum, and of course a big plug for the digest and web pages to persuade all the big UK fans to get on line. Well, Im about to phone Crockford and ask him about the re-releases so watch this space. Yours...........LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Are you hearing what I am? From: "Lars-Ove Karlsson" Organization: IAR Systems AB Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 14:16:25 +1 Just a quick note to say that most 12" singles contain extended versions not on the LP, but the singles from the Level 42 album are the same extended versions as on the CD. The LP has shorter versions of Turn It On, Love Games and Starchild. AYGB was supposed to be B-sides of singles, although Freedom was added. I suppose if we get to the point where we make a remix CD (or two) AYH(WIH)? will be included. Some extended versions are much better than the album versions. For example, I don't like the Chinese Way and The Chant Has Begun too much, but the UK remix of TCW and the Powermix of TCHB is much better. I would love to have the extended versions on CD. Some that exists on CD, are difficult to find. I took me forever to get a copy of Something About You (SISA Mix) on CD (CDV to be exact). I'm still looking for the CD5 with Take Care Of Yourself (extended Version). Some has been released on The Remixes and The Remix Collection, but old 12" have not been released on CD, plus promo mixes (Micro Kid and Sun Goes Down comes to mind). /Lars-Ove e-mail: love @ iar.se --- Now if, if you insist this is for the best Well then I'll sail this ship alone And if, if you swear that you no longer care Well then I'll sail this ship alone The Beautiful South - I'll Sail This Ship Alone ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V98 #16 From: "LOZ Green" Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 13:21:23 -0000 Just to clear a few things up, Cant Walk You Home was never played live to my knowledge Level 42 WERE approached to do a bone theme, that much is true for certain. Readers of the fanzine Pursuit of 42 will remeber it was conjectured that a demo was recorded, of that I am uncertain. Anyway, I have quite a few copies of the book LEVEL 42 'The Definitive Biography', which is considered the bible for Level 42 fans, although in the abscence of any other book on Level 42 and due to some errors in the book its more like that, what do you call it, non-cannon stuff like the gospel of thomas, there is a long word for it, but Ive forgotten. Anyway, the books are mint, and I mean mint and are 10 pounds, 2.50 postage UK, 5 pounds for america, 3.50 for europe, anywhere else just use a sensible amount. Also if you want to pay in your own currency, youll have to add on 4 pounds bank charges, which is exactly what it costs for me to cash a fereign cheque. So for example, paying by a cheque in dollars would cost 10 + 5 + 4 = 19 pounds, use a sensible exchange rate ie 1.5 (although I think its 1.6 now, anyway thats 19 * 1.5, let me see thats half of 19 is 9.5 add it back on thats $28.50 and voila, it really is that easy. Anway, Im looking for someone who wants to do a deal, Ive got 2 foldout poster fan club newsletters, and 4 A5 fan club magazines and a small magazine called Level 42 1980-1990, I want to swap them for something I dont have (I like the US versino of influences on CD) but I like all Level 42 things that I dont have. I must go back to University now for advanced structural design but rest assured I am always out there, forever collating and storing more level 42 facts, anyway, my next posting will contain the FULL reason why Level 42 are called Level 42 according to Douglas Adams and the answer to this question:Including Guaranteed, how many albums were left on Level 42's contract with Polydor? I can't sit idly by while someone is cracking on THE man, G.E. Smith - one of the best and most versatile guitar-slingers ever to pick up the instrument. I doubt many folks appreciate how hard a job it is to be the music director, making charts for everyone, watching for cues, etc., AND be the featured soloist. Except perhaps for Paul Schaffer (who likewise had that job at SNL many years ago), no-one has ever done it better, IMHO! As for his being an "annoying blond guy" - hey, he was Hall & Oates' guitar player, a band that was all about an annoying blond guy! ;o) And I'm particularly fond of "Gresham Blues" - it's different from the other stuff, but if all of Level 42's songs were of the same stripe, they'd have been a boring band. Before I list the people attending I would like to ask a question to the people who intend to come: Does anyone have a good copy of "On the Level" ? We would like to make some "safety" copies, since most copies of this album are being "eaten" by some rust. Anyway here's the list so far: Erik Terheggen, Henk de Hey, Dick Verheul, Arjan Meijer, Gert Emmens, Dirk Vael, Maarten Gorter (?) Ernst-Jan van der Hee, "The Mighty Maomoondog" a.k.a. Bram Strijbos, Andre Huijts, Frans Bal (during the day only) Well quite a list already, but there's plenty of room for some more ! I remember a couple of months ago there was an Englsh guy who said he was working in Holland for a year (in Utrecht if I remember correcly). Sorry I don't remember your name, and I lost all old e-mails, so if you read this, you too are most welcome. We all talk English quite well ! In about a week I will send all details like adress, route information etc. to everyone. More and more very interesting "Level stuff" is reported to be brought to the second LLLF, so there should be something of interest for everyone ! P.S. Even in het Nederlands: Als iemand van de potentiele LLLF bezoekers nog CD's zoekt laat het me even weten. Heb vandaag een nieuw en een gebruikt exemplaar van The Remixes gezien en ook een gebruikte (?) On A Level, dus _niet_ On THE Level). There are a number of advantages for the U.S. digesters: 1) The fares go up by 1/3 after June 1st (the high season), so we will save money, 2) That Monday is a holiday in the U.S. (as well as the UK) so everyone who works gets a free vacation day, 3) Most students will be done by then, but will be able to take a break before they get into any internships/jobs full swing. I would like to book my plane tickets sometime in March, so I hope we get our acts together by then. I just booked my March vacation for San Francisco. Anyone who lives there, I will be there from March 18th to March 23rd, so lets pick a night and we can hang out. Thursday or Friday night would be ideal. What don't I like about The Chinese Way? The lyrics. I think they are dumb - I know that they are tongue in cheek, but they annoy me to no end. The music isn't bad; I particularly like 'I would never lie...'. Dirkies mentioned the Masters @ Work remix of Jacob's Ladder. I think those guys are awesome - they did great work on Almost There, and usually every remix I buy that they do is slammin'. Any Incognito fans should pick up the Remixed CD that contains the two songs. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Losing My Virginity... From: Bob And Mary Mazierski Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 19:02:25 -0500 Hi all. First post. Will try not to be long-winded. BIG fan from Buffalo NY. Started with World Machine (BIG SURPRISE!!). Knew the band was special -- ran right out and found (somehow) LP's of Level 42, Pursuit Of Accidents, True Colors, and import of Physical Presence. Of course have picked up every new release since. Saw the band live once on World Machine tour. So far have immensely enjoyed discussions of favorite/worst songs. I agree sometimes; other times I think (in my best Monty Python voice)..."You're a looney". I feel like a Level 42 song is only bad when compared to the greatness of the other 99% or their work. Has anyone ever done any canvas ranking the releases as a whole from favorite to least favorite (notice NOT worst)?? Here's my best shot...(Of course, all of these are US versions, which I gather are different than UK versions. Never heard "The Early Tapes", so I can't rank)... 1) Running In The Family 2) World Machine 3) Forever Now 4) The Pursuit Of Accidents 5) Level 42 6) Guaranteed 7) Staring At The Sun 8) True Colors Any dissention???? I thought as much. Later...Bob Mazierski rjmaz @ worldnet.att.net ------------------------------ Subject: That blond SNL guy et al From: Dave Mock Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 16:01:50 -0800 (PST) Hey, Micro-Kids: I don't watch too much TV anymore, so I'm not sure if that blond guy referred to in Lolita's recent Digest posting is the former "SNL" band leader, G.E. Smith. If his talents have dwindled, it's too bad, for those of us who are Hall and Oates fans remember him as quite an axeman with the band from 1977 to the mid-late 80s. He's shown off best in the "Private Eyes" and "H20" albums. My favourites are his licks in "Unguarded Minute" from "Private Eyes," and "Open All Night" and "Go Solo" from "H20." He also shone on the "Rock and Soul Live" vid in '83. This is not to diminish the other members of Daryl and John's best band -- saxaphone player Charlie deChant, drummer Mickey Curry (the thunder behind Bryan Adams' best cuts), bassist Tom (T-Bone)Wolk and Daryl and John themselves. All of them are top-flight musicians whose discipline powered some of the tightest, best singles of the 1980s. BTW: I used "Gresham Blues" as the theme for a British blues show I hosted on WRHU-FM in Hempstead, NY during the summer of 1989. It's a beautiful song, a bit mournful too. You can hear some very faint traces of it in "Talking In Your Sleep" from "Forever Now," though it's a different time signature -- the male "oohs," in the background in the middle, the guitar chops (I think it's Mark) and the general feel of the piece. That song along with Man and Silence are the best on that album. It's such a moving tune. I always thought it would be a great song for a movie with a solemn ending. The chorus, piano and sax work are in my opinion phenomenal, as well as the guitar playing of Alan Murphy. I suppose we all get something different out of the songs we hear. I always thought that if that song was played on the local jazz station FM98 the Breeze, it would do quite well considering some of the other music they play that doesn't even compare. I also like A Pharoahs dream, don't ask me why though....It's Over is the bomb! Love that haunting chorus, piano, and the bass line. A list of my least favorites: Fashion Fever Over there The Ape Her Big day Kouyate I just aquired the Jamiroquai singles collection box set. It is awesome! the cds come in a wooden box with a hinged flip-opening top with the Logo and cover text burnt into the box. The singles are: Stillness in Time, Virtual Insanity, Alright, Cosmic Girl and Space Cowboy. You even get the demo version of the last one I just mentioned. There are a couple of instrumental tunes also: Bullet and Slipin' and Slidin' that are just OFF THE HOOK! Talk about a band that can put some sh*t together. Man, I can't say enough about these cats! If anyone is interested in getting this limited box set, you can get it through HMV Toronto Superstore @1-800-567-8468 or 416-620-4470. How can I get the concert video of Forever Now? I would really appreciate it someone could hook me up. I'll send a blank video tape to whomever would be wiling to pay a fee for a copy of the video. Also, can I access the chat room via aol? I have an ancient computer by today's standards and I only have aol 2.7. Finally, I'm going to see Candy Dulfer, Jonathan Butler, and Joyce Cooling (another beautiful female musician) next weekend. It's going to be all of that and then some! Oh yeah, I'll be 30 on Sunday:-(. Not the Forever Now concert. I'm not even even sure if there was or is a Forever Now concert vid... He's also featured on Mellinium. The guy is unbelievable! Of course, this is coming from a non-bass player, but the I found his style of play on the latter to phat! If anyone knows of any other work he might be involved in please let me know. Lolita, I'm sure you have the Jazz of BoogieBack cd. Is there a way to get cds from some of the artist featured? Also, have you heard Omar's solo CD? And finally, have you heard of a solo cd of Max Beesley Jr by any chance? Oh yeah, next Xmas, be sure to pick up a Vibraphonic Christmas. It's a niiiice cd (very funky. It's sure to get all who hear it in the Xmas spirit. The latest is tight too (On a Roll). You Can't Blame Louis Honorable Mention: The Spirit is Free I personally prefer the more 'pop' sound of the group. I favor 99% of everything after World Machine, but don't really get into the early stuff too much, except for "The Pursuit of Accidents". (Changing gears somewhat....) I just wanted to say that my two fav albums have to be Turn It On and Standing In The Light. I really like the songs on these albums. One of my favs is People to only mention a few. I've noticed that Phil has done most of the writing on Standing In the Light and personally I think he's done quite a good job on it. About least fav songs believe me I have a few like "Don't Bother Me" I feel that song goes off the track from their great style. I really didn't like " The Ape" at first but it's kind of cute however the good songs out number the bad ones. I am amazed on how taltented this group is. I really love their style and Mark's voice is soo great!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To all of you who met them consider yourself very lucky because I would love to tell them how great their music is in person!!!!! Turn it on whenever you can...... from a levelhead, Lauren ;-) ------------------------------ Subject: 12" extended versions From: "Andre Huijts" Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 11:23:15 +0100 Inzo wrote on the last digest: >I was under the impression the 12" singles were only released in Europe. No, there are even some US and Canadian 12" singles. Like the Something about you 12" with the instrumental version of that song on the B-side. And like the Canadian gatefold double 12" Lessons In Love, which has the LIL dub- mix version on it. Both are not to be found anywhere else, as far as I know. >Also, I have 5" CDV's of Leaving me now and It's Over but they are the >ones that only play in Europe (Pal TV?) >Does anyone have the ones that will work here for trade or something? Well the audio parts should work. The video won't. Still if you want to part from the Leaving Me Now CDV....;) ! What picture is on the It's Over CDV ? Mark or the woman-with-letter ? There should be two versions, I have the one with Mark on it, never seen the other. >I cleaned the record and put in on. Dammit! The A side is extended. >Throughout the song (Are you hearing what I hear) there is sounds not on >the album version; some keyboard here, some guitar there. And yes, it >goes into an extended ending not on the album, I think the instrumental >bridge starts out with some music not on the album, it sound too long. You mean the "rototom" bridge I guess. You're right is is different and longer. Reminds a bit of their early performances.....Mark and Phil on Rototoms and Mike behind the drumkit......aaah those were the days... >I am telling you this because, I am wondering if all the other 12" A >sides are extended with extra stuff? Well most of them are, that's the original thought behind the 12" single remember. >That would be Love Games, On the 12" I have it's the original album version I think. There are some remixes on both CD and vinyl however. >Turn it on, Starchild, The Sun Goes Down >Do these songs have alternate single >versions? Regretfully I don't have these 12"es. But I know Turn it on and Starchild have extended versions on 12". Don't know if any of them made it to CD. I do have "The Chant Has Begun". This is the Powermix version. On the B-side there are Almost There (album version) and a remix of The Sun Goes Down, wich carries the insane subtitle ''upfrontmix (ill bred but with jam)". This last remix is on one of the two remixes CDs forgot wich one..... But there are plenty more 12" singles with extended or remixed versions which are not on any CD (as far as I know): Weave your spell Out of sight, Out of mind (GREAT ! !) I sleep on my Heart (on second thought this one might be on CD somewhere.....) To be with you again (ADSC Mix) Heaven In My Hands (US remix) Guaranteed (Wheel spin warrior Mix) Overtime (The lorimer instumenral mix on Royal 1) I'm sure there are more.... >I think it was a mistake not to include Are you hearing what I >hear? and any other extended single version on As Years Go By. Well, the general thought behind AYGB was to put on CD the B-sides, so this explains why there are no extended versions of A-sides on it.Besides a CD has a limited capacity. I guess we would need about 4 or 5 CDs for all extended or remixed versions of "A-sides" ! Maybe you should take a look at Lazlo Nibble's excellent Level 42 discography. You can find a link to it from my site: http://home.worldonline.nl/~huijts/index.html Look for the links section at the bottom of the page. You'll be surprised how many versions were released, I know I was ! >And I'm sorry I only have it on a crackily old record. Well it does have it's charms too, not ? >Sucks that there are still rarities out there. No way, it's this what makes "hunting" fun ! I find it great if I find something I don't have yet. On the other hand, you are right that more people should be able to enjoy these "rare" tracks. But I think this will be a good idea for the next digest CD project: Remixes and extended versions that are still ONLY on Vinyl. Maybe we should start making a list ? Groetjes, Andre
