Apparently Mark is delighted !!!! Bill Miller ------------------------------ Subject: Boons' Bollocks! From: JDoody @ checkpoint.co.uk Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 12:05:22 GMT In reply to the person who was sweated on by Mark King, I have an unusual tell to tale. I saw Level 42 live at the Hammersmith Palais in London around about 1982. I too was at the front of the stage. Unfortunately, Boon's zip on his trousers decided to test the law of gravity..........and succeeded! I shouted out "Boon, your bollocks are on show!!!", much to the amusement of the other band members. To top it all, as Mark was shaking hands with the people at the front of the crowd at the end of the concert, the guy next to me pulled him off the stage. Mark's bottom then decided to make friends with my head. Luckily he hadn't eaten a Domino's pizza with Tabasco sauce the night before. So, a very bizarre night meeting two "Members" of the band. Top that! Jon Whoops alordy, my bottom's on fire!! ------------------------------ Subject: Orlando, Vegas, Lolita, Mark King an alcoholic? From: "Garcia, Michael C." Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 09:45:26 -0500 On Orlando: Winman says his mom's condo could be a L42 party hangout with no overhead! We could all pitch in on food and drinks! We wouldn't have to attend all the Disney parks; only those advantageous to us adults. We could chose one park and go on that. Don has been to Orlando many times and probably knows the best deals. Also, if we want the most people to attend, that would be a logical destination for others across the way. No more expensive then going to England/London elsewhere in Europe as he brought out. And if we do it in the off season before the summer crowds come it can be pulled off. On Vegas: MNTSUN brought the positives in that it's relatively inexpensive, lots to do there; gamblers and non-gamblers, predictable weather, reasonable airline packages, and lots of lights and night life! On Lolita: She may have a point on the guys across the way about it being to expensive for them to travel all that way to Vegas. Like I said, the objective is to have as much Levelheads to attend this and have a good time. Orlando (Lolita forbid), is a more reasonable place for the people in the U.K./Europe to travel to. I'm sure though she would sacrifice her personal feelings so that others could enjoy themselves. But I agree with that maybe we should do this before Memorial Day (May), crowds come and the weather is too hot. So please decide on the date then we can pick a location. On Mark King: I saw on the Fait Accompli video (which I gladly own), he said at one time he did drink heavily but quit because of the violent consequences that materialized when drinking. That's been quite awhile now, but I don't think he would take up where he left off, would he? Can anyone give some recent info on Mark's habit or lack of one? I'm "Guaranteed" of one thing though and that's I'll work "Overtime" even "Seven Years" to get to a ILF. "With A Little Love" and a "Kinder Eye" anything can be accomplished, why I could even "Lasso The Moon". Across the page (across the ages) the moving hand of history bleeds ...For a kinder eye to see us, not as we are, but as we dream. Ciao, Fellow Levelheads. ------------------------------ Subject: ILF '99 From: Nathania Apple Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 08:36:39 -0700 Okay, so maybe this is a little selfish on my part, but I think LOZ has a great idea about the Isle of Wight. My husband has a conference to attend in Birmingham sometime in May and I intend to accompany him. I would love to visit all the historic L42 sights and possibly even meet Mark (my knees go weak at the thought). Not sure about the dates of our trip yet, but I should know more soon. If it's decided that ILF will take place in the US, I'd be more likely able to get to Vegas than Orlando, being that I live near San Francisco. BTW how many Levelheads are in Northern California? Enough to have a fest of our own? Steve - do you recall the name of the club in SJ? Just curious. I just received my Level Best songbook from http://www.musicianstore.com Pretty cool, with some photos of the boys looking really young. Which prompts me to ask: When is Mark's birthday? And didn't there used to be bio's (yes, that apostrophe is appropriate, Andrew. I double checked) on the L42 web site. What happened to them? From: "Adam Hankinson" Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 17:19:47 +0100 Hello friends, I'm glad to see that the ILF debate is now in full swing. Loz's guided tour of MK land sounds like a great idea, We should of done that this year.... I know lots of people that missed out on the fun in May want to go to the IOW maybe to meet MK and/or ?? I feel it would not be right to expect him to turn up every year. Anyway, As I have said before I want to combine an ILF and a chance to visit some part of the world I haven't been to. But, no matter where the ILF is held....I will be there. BTW, Winston - I love you, your mom AND her condo! ha ha Andrew Goodwin, congtats! Yesterdays post was the funniest ever. I read the digest in a car park at scotch Corner services and was creasing up with laughter. Much to the amusement of the others in their cars. Anyway, Let the ILF debate continue......I'm off to get my passport sorted. From reading "Level 42: The Definitive Biography" at Win's house during the NY/NJ Levelfest, it seems that at least three band members had spurts where they drank a lot, and it took a toll...but there has been nothing to suggest that King is much a "lush," at least since he realised in the late 80s that his behavior when drinking was occasionally embarrassing. Other evidence could come up to contradict me...and I'm sure the difference in his face during the "Running In the Family" video shoots and tours may have led to some speculation...but I think Mark is under control of his conduct. Considering the pressures he's been through and how hard he works, I think he looks pretty good. TCOY, The Duke "...brotherhood is not so wild a dream as those who profit by postponing it pretend." (Norman Corwin) ------------------------------ Subject: Awesome Funk Compilation CD From: Pat Flanagan Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 14:39:26 -0500 Kinda off-topic, kinda not. Just picked up a fantastic funk compilation CD at Best Buy, "Millennium Funk Party" from Rhino Records. If you don't have many of these essential funk tunes, you gotta get this disc (I already had about 2/3 of them, but it's great to have them all on one disc): Brick House -- Commodores Love Rollercoaster -- Ohio Players Dazz -- Brick Tear The Roof Off The Sucker (Give Up The Funk) -- Parliament Jungle Boogie -- Kool & The Gang Tell Me Something Good -- Rufus Serpentine Fire -- Earth, Wind & Fire Pick Up The Pieces -- Average White Band Play That Funky Music -- Wild Cherry I'll Take You There -- The Staple Singers Do It ('Til You're Satisfied) -- B.T. Express Superfly -- Curtis Mayfield What Is Hip? -- Tower Of Power Best Of My Love -- Emotions Atomic Dog -- George Clinton Slide -- Slave Fantastic Voyage -- Lakeside More Bounce To The Ounce Part 1 -- Zapp You Dropped A Bomb On Me -- The Gap Band Rapper's Delight -- Sugarhill Gang Not a perfect collection (I would've replaced Rapper's Delight with the song it's based on, Good Times by Chic -- yeah, I know, it's an important groundbreaking rap tune, but, today, the rappin' on it sounds like Warren Beatty in Bulworth -- I also would've put some early Cameo on there somewhere), but pretty damn good for $12. It also wins the "Most Obnoxiously Ugly Packaging & Artwork" award -- you'll know why when you see it. And now, back to our regularly scheduled program. ____________________ PFPD -- newmedia marketing consulting a limited liability company PO Box 281, Granger, IN 46530-0281 v:616.663.2250 -- competitive business advantages through creative technology ------------------------------ Subject: Orlando or bust! From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 15:44:34 EDT > Now going to Orlando is all well and good, but it has no link with Level 42? What did Vegas have to do with it? If you want an American site which can be linked to Level 42, New Orleans would be the obvious choice (for it's place A Fait Accompli). > What I think is that the Level Fest should be held on the Isle Of Wight > again. Well, I'm all for going back there, Loz, but I think you're just pissed you missed your chance the first time! ;o) If folks want to go back, I would be agreeable, particularly if there's a Mark King tour on. > In response to Lolita about Orlando, I agree about the humidity and temp. As the ILF would be in the spring, Orlando's climate would be quite comfortable. Lolita was referring to the summer. > Orlando is almost all Disney related stuff, or very expensive (Epcot, > Universal and Wet & Wild are all at least $35 for a day long pass). Not very objective Lolita, but you're correct about the ticket prices. But the Fest itself wouldn't have to go those places. Remember that, this year in the UK, there was a small group of 6 or 8 or 10 people going site-seeing together both before and after the actual Fest. The official Level Fest was one day (and night) in Ryde and at the Raytheon club. That's when the crowd tripled or more in number. I expect an Orlando Fest would be similar. We set up the big party for one afternoon/evening somewhere affordable, and folks can do their site-seeing before or after as they wish. You don't have to go to a Disney park, but I'm sure we'd arrange a group for that. Those who want to head to the beach or the Space Center can do that. We weren't joined at the hip in England - I doubt that we would be in the States. And central Florida offers the widest range of choices for activities. > It is more important now to pick a date, and work out the place later. I agree with that, but the choice of place - in this case especially - will affect the date. If enough people really want to go to Orlando, then the date should be chosen accordingly. If not, then the date is much more flexible. > I agree that Orlando is not a good place to have it..I have never been > there, but I hear that it is absolutely outrageously expensive to stay there This is absolutely untrue, and I wish you people would stop spreading such lies! In the off-season (that is, before Memorial Day) rooms in Orlando are CHEAP! This is because they have soooo many rooms to accomodate the summer crowds, that they are desperate to fill them in the off-season. I HAVE been there (21 trips to date), and I know what I'm talking about. > I for one am willing to do Orlando. I have no problem hanging with Mickey > & company, and there is much more to do than the parks. Thanks, Win. Now here's someone who's been there! > My mom has a timeshare condo that sleeps 10 folks, so if she is not > using it, i might be able to have Level 42 party central at the condo, > with the best lodging price....free!! It's sounding better all the time! :o) Let's keep the opinions coming folks - where-ever it will be held, the '99 ILF is going to be another great one! How about some more Europeans speaking up? How many of you are willing to come to the States for a Fest? And a big welcome back to Jason Bell! That would get me to the > Czech Republic or something. Sea notwithstanding. And you don't know the half of it. . . I live in Lubbock (Texas). I can't make an edge of the country in less than seven hours! The other three are approximately 20 to 30 hours with me driving like a stark raving lunatic. This reminds me of my trip back to New Orleans in '95. In the happy person mover, I was accompanied by three Brits, a Turkish diva, and the second most wonderful French woman I've ever had to pleasure to know. One of the Brits (Rico) drove from Dallas to New Orleans on the first evening in transit. Upon entering Baton Rouge, Rico remarked, "If I were to drive this long in Great Britain, I'd had to have turned around!" That struck me as odd since I used to make the Lubbock to New Orleans weekend commute about once a month. And the obligatory Level 42 connection - the New Orleans video shoot. One of these days we'll need to have a NO Levelfest, and I can play tour guide (or designated drinker- which is my official? position at the Texas Level Roundups). Hey, I'm all for an Orlando-fest. Of course, I'm very partial, since I live less than an hour down the road. Heck, let's have it in Tampa! Go Bucs!! (That's for you, Andrew G.) Back to O-town, if we did have it there, it would definitely have to be before the end of May. The weather's great in March/April. The prices aren't that outrageous. And remember who originally suggested Orlando, folks. There are 5 known Love Games 7" records, and 1 possible. UK, Holland, Spain, Germany, and the 7" white flexi with Love Games live. The 4 normal releases are all backed with edits of 'Forty Two' but the crazy thing is they are ALL considerably different. And I mean not just 5 seconds lost in the fade, but up to 30 seconds different and longer, this is weird. Anyway, what I want to ask is if anyone has the Spanish Love games 7", the cover is the same design as the UK 12" and the German 7", but the titles are in Spanish. I would like a photo or scan of this for the fanzine. Next, the only other thing I am uncovering here is a possible Australian 7" of Love Games containing '43' on the B-Side. If anyone can confirm this record or has a copy the PPLLEEAASSEE get in touch with me ASAP. As things are turning out, there is almost less items for 'Level 42' as there was for 'Early Tapes'. I have got all the canadian Turn It On stuff too, and most other stuff so things are shaping up nicely. On to other matters. I am on holiday from Saturday till Wednesday, I'll be out of action so to speak and uncontactable so in my absence Andy Goodwin will be providing the humour (for a change). Right, as for his unjustified attacks on my pencil. Lets get one thing straight. In about issue 4 or 5 of Word Machine, yes, theres a competition and yes, the winner gets a pencil. But not just any pencil, no, this pencil is a piece of Level 42 history. One of about 20 that John Gould had made up to give to people who supported the band in the VERY early days before Early Tapes, Strategy, before everything! Now I could give away a signed copy of One Man or something, but the pencil is much better. HOWEVER, it is nice to see that if Andy wins the pencil, he'll be donating it to that Loz Green Level 42 The Definitive Biography re-homing project he was talking about :-) I don't know why I put the smiley face on, I am really venemous about this. OK, so, see you next Thursday, and make sure you behave whilst I'm away. BTW, Looks like greatest hits could be coming in September too. See yoos all later..........................LOZ
