Twee ... Drie" I think it's Guaranteed he covers, but I'm not sure, since my mom didn't know it :-/ Come on Dutch guys, anyone can trace this song to know what cover it is, if it is one Dirk ------------------------------ Subject: Random Musings From: Lolitaj Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 09:08:08 EST Hey All, * I just wanted to make a brief comment about songs that are people's least favorites. The songs that people submitted are just opinions, and opinions can't be 'wrong' - there are always people that won't agree, and that's the point. I happen to love Eyes Waterfalling and Romance, but I would not try to change the mind of someone who doesn't. There are certain songs that many of us will defend to the death, myself included, but there will always be someone who doesn't like them. Another point someone else made is about the consistency of the least favorites. Mine are quite consistent, because I often skip them. Just because they are my favorite band doesn't mean that I unconditionally love every song. It's like when you are dating or married to someone - there may be one or two things about them that get to you at times, but that doesn't mean you don't love them. I happen to not like The Chinese Way, but I like almost every other song on that CD and play the CD quite often. I know there are Chinese Way lovers here, and I wouldn't try to convince them why they shouldn't like it. Let's just let each person express their opinion freely. * Don't mean to be so negative - another person asked which instrumental was the favorite, and mine would be 43 hands down. The version of Sandstorm on The White Funky and the versions of Mr. Pink and 88 on Physical Presence are the runners-up. * The 'lovely instrumental' at the end of 100 and Rising for Incognito is called Jacob's Ladder, and it is a masterpiece, IMO. The arrangement is fantastic and is very lush. Randy Hope-Taylor on bass is a real treat. * Dirkies - I still didn't get it. When did you send it? Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Various musings From: winston.walker @ wathneltd.com Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 9:32:56 -0500 Shuf, i agree with Eric on getting Weller's first solo album. It is by far his best IMHO. I do have WildWood, but haven't purchased anything else since then Eric, congrats on the upcoming nuptials! You will have fun in Maui. My sister got married there as well. Have a nice, safe trip! Brad - Just doing a little teasing. Carl said you were worried what I would think. It's yours, and you can do with it what you want. Plus, like you said, it makes a great wedding gift. :-) Also, even though we all teased you at your place in Vegas, your team came through and won the big SUPER BOWL - Congrats!!! Emikatie, drop me a line about vids, and Fait Accompli Jake, I have Fait Accompli on NTSC laser Disc, which happens to be a Japanese Import. I now is used to be available on NTSC video tape, but an unsure if it is still in print Tcoy, Win ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Shawn Colvin MP3 From: Matthew Blackmon Organization: The Lightcraft Studio Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 09:56:33 -0600 Brian- Here's the link to the Shawn Colvin MP3. http://198.213.124.41/segoy/avalanche!!s.mp3 This is the track "Shotgun Down the Avalanche" recorded at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 1993. The backing musicians at Allison Kraus, Mary Chapin-Carpetner, and Béla Fleck. If you're interested in buying the album, drop me a line, and I'll look up Planet Bluegrass'es contact info. M ------------------------------ Subject: Gresham Blues, Cobham, etc. From: "Eric J. Hansen" Organization: Worldmachine Technologies Corporation Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 11:54:43 -0500 I personally have always liked the track Gresham Blues. It's definitely a departure from their other work, but has a nice groove and warmth (it's also a great slow dance song!) Nice keyboard solo by Mike, too. re: Billy Cobham (or Cobly Bilham, his label), I've been a fan for a long time. I originally heard him playing on Mahavishnu Orchestra with other legends John McLaughlin, Rick Laird and Jan Hammer. If you're starting out with Billy, definitely get his earlier, Atlantic label recordings. A *great* starter is his first "Best of" CD. The cover has a chest with a pair of silver drum sticks in it. Every track is killer (the first track is enough to rid your house of vermin!) After getting into this and some of the earlier, original recordings, I started listening to Billy's more recent stuff on GRP. Ugh. Thumbs down. If you're into smooth jazz and all that, then you might get into it. But, for the funk/progressive fusion purists, though, stick with earlier works. -Eric p.s. thanks "en masse" for the wedding wishes! -- Eric J. Yes, in Japan (read: hard-to-get, expensive). -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo @ swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ::: Internet Music Wantlists: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo/Wantlists ------------------------------ Subject: least favorite songs From: "phillip bolden" Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 11:00:10 PST Oh okay...I suppose everybody has some least favorite tunes by Our He~~~roes which to me makes sense when I think about how long it took me to get used to some songs. Eventually they all grow on me but some are better played less often...like I can appreciate songs like "The Ape" or "Gresham Blues" for the memories they conjure but I don't wake up in the morning saying "Wow I think I'll listen to Hours By The Window all day!" Know what I mean? These songs are all good for one reason or another and sometimes for no reason at all...that's the beauty of obsurity. "It's all good but..." Level 42 - Star Child(took me a while I'd always liked the harmonies but Mike's falsetto caught me off guard, now I dig it. It's classic.) Pursuit of Accidents - The Chinese Way(as if you couldn't guess...it's cheesy but cheese can please too, all is forgiven). Standing in the Light - Micro-Kid*Now I'm a PC tech and Network administrator...now I have to like it, it's MY song* & The Sun Goes Down* I thought it was shallow and overtly basic. DUH! It was about cheesy Americans, now I understand and I laugh*(once again acclaimating to Brit funk a bit awkward). Currently my favorit CD. True Colors - Hours By The Window/ U.S. version(perfect for those I need to be sad days, but how sad do really want to get.) My Hero/ U.K. version(the epitome of obsure tunes originally a let down 'cause I bought the cd for that song.) Now they're broken up and I'm not picky anymore, funny how that works. World Machine/ U.S. - Physical Presence(a painful song at first I couldn't believe it preceeded Something About You...weird segue. How~ how~ how~ however it did add some balance to the overall jazz mode. Not a pop song by any stretch of the imagination.) World Machine/ U.K. - Hot Water(great high energy song- best version on an lp- I got tired of it showing up on records.) Running in the Family -Fashion Fever(lack of content...couldn't believe the same band wrote I Want Eyes, but then again Micro-Kid -fair enough. Then I saw it on the Live @ Wembley Video...whole different story.) Staring at the Sun - Heaven In My Hands(1988 I'm getting ready to graduate from Army Boot camp I was musically starved for weeks! I had only a week before graduating earned the privlidge of illeagally having a walkman and what tape should I find...yup. Mind you as far as I knew the band had been broken up since early '88. Oh yeah the song, it shocked the living crap out of me "What?! Distortion guitars?! I don't feel so good." Naturally I got over it. The remix is much better. Guaranteed - The Ape or Set Me Up (depending what I ate for lunch that day but they're not bad at all in my estimation they aspire to contemporary jazz...minus lyrics they could've been quite popular. Forever Now (BMG) - *no gripes* Forever Now (Resurgence) -*sort of* Past Lives(musically I like it but I don't get it lyrically "Welcome to the house of Usher?" guys you're scaring me.) Time Will Heal(cheeeeeeese...that is until I found my self saying the same thing to my ex-girlfriend whom apparently wants me back. Good cheese, at least it's not American or Velveta.) Connoisseur Collection - *What?* Turn It On - *Who?* As Years Go By - *never heard this one* Live At Wembley -The Chinese Way (I still don't understand how this song got so popular. Do the Chinese know about this? Do they like it?) Past & Presence - *never heard it* So much for that... lets talk about the segue game. That's when you make a compilation tape of say... Level 42 for instance and from all different albums/cds and try to make each song blend in with the next as best you can so they sound like that's the way they were meant to go. I stumbled upon this game some time ago when I wanted to have a tape most of my favorite LFT songs and to my amazment after recording song after song I played the whole tape back to hear the new continuity or context/mood/feel... and I want everyone whom hasn't noticed this to try it. Record and replay or just play "Lying Still" immediately followed by "Two Solitudes" or try "I Want Eyes" followed by "Seven Days" and see if you gain a new appreciation for their less popular songs. Mind you, when you create your own context try to use the same media ie LP records, or tapes or CDs this will keep the tempo and pitch/key from altering the blend. It's also fun to mix LFT with other artists like Pat Metheny and LFT blend well together. It is definately a way to refresh your perspectives on songs you're "just not too crazy about" or heard soooo many times what does it matter anymore-sob-sniff-ahhhrgg! Try it out kids and let yer old Uncle Phil know how it went(You don't even need parental guidence.)"Rub my stomach while I pat my head ...." 43.Love! Friday I bought myself a really nice Synth (an Alesis QS7)--something I've been meaning to do for years. Now I need some software to drive it. It came with a few pieces of software, namely something called Cubasis (which I can only assume is a "light" version of Cubase). I know there are a few of you out there doing music on your Macintoshes, and I'm trying to get recommendations on software. Cubasis seems to be a nice (even robust) "starter" package, but it seems difficult to create drum patterns and insert midi events (such as panning, etc). I'm hoping to avoid paying $500--I'd like to find something closer to $100-$200 if possible, as this is just a hobby for me at the moment. P.S. I've got an older Mac (IIci but I'm buying an 040 upgrade card today). I've a question about Polydor's releases later in the year. Has anyone heard more about what dates they have penned yet? Do we know which albums, if not all will have some changes made to them? Please let me know. I have 2 email addresses for anyone who wants them (not for spamming purposes of course!!!) first one you should see above and the second one: yes, I know but there was little time when setting up my account, and all of the other variables were already in use. Please, please don't hesitate to email me or to the digest in general if you have any info... Very truly, Jules. ------------------------------ Subject: Digest Member Music Compilation From: paul fucito Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 19:56:46 -0500 I remember hearing talk of putting together a compilation of original music by digest members...If this is so, and it's not too late...I'd like to include a track or two...
