As someone without a drop of Scottish blood in my body, I feel I am perfectly situated to get self-righteously indignant about this shameful slur on the Scottish nation, on behalf of all the politically correct Digest members. First the World Cup, now this. It's all too much to expect our hardy tartan brethren to take. Someone else prepared to publicly admit to liking Hue & Cry, now there's a shock. Perhaps Tianna and I should have in depth discussions about them on the forum, just so all you technical bods feel alienated like I do when all this mp3 stuff comes up. Enough Tubular Bells already! What is this, the Mike "Ridiculously Overrated Hippy Who Got Lucky By Having His Music Used On The Exorcist & Who Has Much To Answer For By Giving Richard Branson His First Break" Oldfield Digest? Enough about Cleveland/Denver already! What is this, the American "Large Lumps Running Into Each Other And Falling Over & Not A Patch On Real Football Anyway" Football Digest? > Subject: Funky Road Tunes Needed > From: "Allwyn & Laura Kelly" > > Oh yeah I live in the States so of course I have to be accesssable to > getting them right away. Guess that rules The Wurzels out then. "Accesssable", incidentally? The errant a I can take, but a triple sss? Are you Kaa the python in disguise? OK, let's see. The James Taylor Quartet, obviously. Personally I'm an early man and think Get Organised was their peak, but then Wait A Minute is worth getting for Starsky & Hutch alone (as previously mentioned, the single greatest piece of recorded music ever.) Corduroy, probably not widely available in America but splendidly funky in the early JTQ mould if you can find them. Not jazz funk, but Donald Fagen's The Nightfly is obviously the peak of human endeavour, but you must know that already. Raw Stylus are very Brand New Heavies, very slick as well (produced by Gary Katz). I'd better leave it at that since everybody else will be pitching their favourites and filling up the Digest. Oh! The only reason I wrote in the first place. There seems to be a trend for sending in a message to make other Digest readers slaver in retrospective jealousy at the wondrous concerts to which we have been party. Well, it's my turn. On Tuesday night I had the unique pleasure of seeing Take 6. I think they're fairly well known in America, but in the UK they're still (astoundingly) an almost complete secret, so for those of you who don't know them, they are the finest six piece a cappella jazz gospel group there is (and as you know, the competition in that particular genre is pretty fierce). There are not sufficient superlatives to describe their magnificence, so I will merely say that if you get a chance to see them, take it (or if you get a chance to see them six times, take six! Aha ha ha ha ha ha ho ho ho hee hee ho ho ha ha ho ha, I truly tickle myself sometimes.) What's most incredible is what they do on record, they can reproduce live. If you want to try out this astounding band, start at the beginning with their album Doo Be Doo Wop Bop. Lately they've gone all Boyz II Men to try and get commercial success, but the early stuff is unparalleled. There. Wasn't that sensible? AG ------------------------------ Subject: Scotland forever From: "Green, Laurence F" Date: Thu, 16 Jul 1998 13:06:00 +0100 With (deceased) Scottish grandparents I feel I am in a position to add my commentsworth. Lay off the scots. I thought it was disgusting, we are supposed to a union of several (3 or 4 no-one really knows) countries, but at the end of the world cup final 'John Motson' BBC commentator splurted out, 'and if only England could have been there' on top of this England get to sing the national anthem of Britain, whereas the scotts have to make do with, well, whatever it is. Lay off the scots. (I have to say from experience though, they actually do drink gallons of alcohol) And Mike Lindup has a house there! Just wanted to clear up a little misconception. Since I posted my mini review of the Cover Tape II, I've gotten several e-mails from fellow digesters, requesting copies of this tape. I'm not the fellow who put this great compilation together. That would be Bill Wilson. I think Bill posted to yesterday's digest regarding the delay in making more copies of this tape. BTW, the tape is offered free of charge from Bill, so you can't beat that deal, right? I don't know if this concert was talked about in the past few days but if you have the chance to see Latin Crossings (they're in Europe for the next couple of weeks), go see them. Latin Crossings features Arturo Sandoval, Tito Puente and Steve Winwood. I saw them at the Montreal Jazz Festival (their only North American date so far) and they tore the roof off! The entire band was incredibly tight, especially when you know that they were practicing together fon only one week, prior to the concert. Latin Crossings plays material from Sandoval, Puente and Winwood, and you can really see that the musicians enjoy playing this great music. Catch you later! Claude Champagne crzylife @ autoroute.net
