What do you think about Mark King`s solo album "Influences" I have never heard this album , because there is no this CD in Poland What kind of music is on this album ? / funky , soul or jazz / Did you hear about Polish bass player name Wojtek Pilichowski ? he plays like Mark King ! sincerely Edward Edward edwardno @ polbox.com ------------------------------ Subject: Least Favorite Song From: paul fucito Date: Sun, 25 Jan 1998 10:46:12 -0500 First off and without starting a war, I DO like The Chinese Way. To me, that song is pure pop and I love the underlying bass line. It may be different from the other tracks on the Pursuit Of Accidents album, but it's damn catchy..... The only song i dislike (really just a part of the song) is "A Pysical Presence" when they all go "how how how......." It's like they are overdoing their vocals a bit there. I love the rest of the song. (Now my fiancee, loves that part of the song... and we argue over it) Now...For my one comment (recurring I should say) between the two versions of Forever Now. The Resurgence IS superior to the RCA, BUT the RCA version has "All Over You" which is just a great tune and the Brittish public liked it enough to see it chart well in 1994. I just wish they could have squeezed it on there somewhere. So, I listen to both copies just as much. It depends on whether I'm in an "All Over You" mood or need to hear "Learn To Say No". paul F ------------------------------ Subject: Billy Cobham From: Brian Date: Sun, 25 Jan 1998 10:57:20 -0600 > Phil was not the first to play left-handed hi-hat...Billy Cobham among > others had been doing it for years. Anyone even mildly interested in drumming needs to check him out. I saw him play at a local club in '93. Got to chat for a second, shake hands and get his autograph. Powerful drummer. Pretty complex. Whoever posted the link for the Shawn Colvin MP3, can you repost it? Thanks! Brian L. ------------------------------ Subject: Guranteed Live in NTSC? From: getjakeit @ webtv.net (Jake Lennington) Date: Sun, 25 Jan 1998 13:58:37 -0600 Was GL ever released in the NTSC format? If not, I'd be willing to buy a copy that has been dubbed to NTSC from PAL. As you know, I am mere days older than he, but with the reversal of seasons and time zone thing, we could have been born at the same time :-) The machine stops. John ------------------------------ Subject: Hi y'all! From: Bilal42 Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Date: Sun, 25 Jan 1998 22:19:47 EST I hope you are all well. Just a quickie: some folks at work are putting together an 'amateur' band, I'm on bass. They like rock ballads, each of us nominate one track. Any suggestions (Level 42 of course!)? I've suggested Leaving Me Now for now, although I want to do Lessons in Love, because I enjoy playing and singing that at the same time. I await your ideas! Bilal (Bilal42 @ aol.com) ------------------------------ Subject: The Big Chill From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 00:13:08 EST Hello, friends on The Digest: I wasn't going to post on this subject, as it really has nothing to do with Level 42. But, as I was catching up on the past two days' Digests, an ironic connection just landed on me like a ton of bricks. You see, ever since noon Friday, I've been living the movie "The Big Chill". Thursday night, one of my closest friends (and the man who gave me my first radio job in his station 16 years ago), took his own life. Aside from a couple of hotel clerks, I was the last person to see him alive. His friends all began gathering together just after his body was discovered on Friday, and hour by hour over the course of two days, pieces of the puzzle began surfacing, ultimatelly revealing a rather incredible story - which we then had to relate to his family Saturday night. It was the most bizarre and surreal experience I've ever had, much more like a movie than like real life. Even sorting through his personal effects from boxes in his attic revealed unusual treasures: a picture of him with Wilson Picket, a letter from Otis Redding, polaroids of him at a Playboy club back in the sixties with a man who is now one of our state congressmen - I'm keeping those in case I need them someday ;o). The connection is that, while he really didn't know much about Level 42, back when the Forever Now album first came out, I played him one song while we were on our way to lunch. "Listen to this," I said, knowing he would appreciate the lyrics of that particular song. He did. He liked it a lot, and wanted to hear it again. The song? "Forever Now". Rick Bridges was a gentle and generous soul who marched to the beat of his own drummer. After selling his interest in the radio station, he devoted his time to teaching Silva classes and to helping people who reached out to him. After twenty years of that, he simply decided it was time to leave the party. He was 52. "Holy Grail, Holy Cow...I just want to live forever now." - Z. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- PS - on a lighter note, congratulations Eric! Aloha. ------------------------------ Subject: "The Artist" and Larry Graham From: RBnDk Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 03:33:32 EST Hello Everyone! Last Thrusday, I had the wonderful pleasure of seeing two extremely gifted entertainers. I must say this had to be one of the most awesome concerts I have ever been to. (I am sure if I had ever seen Level 42... I would have a different opinion!!!) Larry Graham and Graham Central Station opened the show.. and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. When I heard who was opening up for The Artist.. I scratched my head.. and wondered who Larry Graham might be. But thanks to Winston.. who is THE man by the way....for giving me the lowdown on one of the funkiest bass players around.. When I saw him slapping that bass.. I slapped myself for not hearing this sooner. I had a small idea what I might be instore for when Winston told me that he was a member of "Sly and The Family Stone".. but when they played.. It was great!!! The Artist made his usual grand entrance.. and was nonstop for about 2 1/2 hours. He played everything except for the drums.. but I am sure he would have if he had more time to!! His backup band was unbeatable....and he played music from almost every aspect of his work.. I would have liked to have heard more from "Emancipation"... But I couldn't argue when he played "Do Me Baby"... I just melted.. aahh... On a Level note however, last week I had the esteemed pleasure of meeting Mikey Payne for the first time.. Mikey and I met here on the digest over a year ago and have been friends ever since... He decided to make a day trip to San Francisco, and I was his host! I had a BLAST!!! He is an awesome guy.. I wish we could have had more time together.. but we have made plans to get together.. and hope to head out to NY in the next few monts and take advantage of Winston... Are ya ready for us out there?? 8) And.. I just felt I have to stick up for "Time Will Heal".. I kept my mouth shut during the whole Mentos ordeal.. but I think it is one of the best songs are "Forever Now"..and with the new thread of least favourite songs.. it is basically the least liked song on "FN" and I just want to make a plea for you to listen to it again.. The end of the song with the building .. especially the Eight notes on the keyboards... it just gets me every time! (I have to admit that I love anything and everything Mike has done.. so I have a soft spot for any of his music!) TCOY! HAVE A NICE ALOHA TIME. And thanx Eric for everything you do to make it possible to talk with other L42 fans !! 2 Erik T, Gheees, ges i 'm a very lucky guy cos i've got that live version of "Wings of love". So far i have talk with other fans, nobody got it. Well, let me tell ya a little story. I have tape that concert on "Ferry Maats soul show" in real time 10th december 1981. Our boys ended with LG, but was NOT send out complete !! About 2 weeks later the "Soulshow" did repeat 2 songs of that concert, LG & WOL (as an extra). There is one problem. My cassette tape was ending at the last minute of WOL so i don't have it complete myself. Has anyone got that concert complete ? Have already mailed to "TROS" to rerun that concert, but they didn't replay yet. Phils playing at the begining of WOL remembers me of some of his later drumming style. It's like he had already a basic for some late L42 numbers. I'll take that cassette with me to the second LLLF (het zou leuk zijn als je kunt komen !! a MUST voor elke Levelfan. So contact Dr. Dre !!) Cee ya !! Take care of yourselfs Henri
