I think actually it was - A guitar recorded with the tape machine at normal speed, then played back at double speed, doubling the speed/pitch of the instrument. :o) There's a lot of talk at the moment about fave/least fave tracks and albums (what with the bio's and all). What I want to know is ....why the preferences ??? Any chance of brief explanations as to why you like/dislike certain tracks. Like - Leaving Me Now, mainly 'cos of the piano in it and also towards the end where Mark & Mike are singing together - what harmonies. I have never been able to play this track and then move on. I always have to go back to it one more time !!! Dislike - Physical Presence, to be fair, I don't really dislike this track, apart from the bit in the middle where they chant the "HOW...HOW..HOW" bit. It just doesn't seem to go with the song at all. Non L42 bit : Anybody remember a group called Fashiøn from the 80's ??? I was listening to one of their albums 'Fabrique' the other day. Pretty good stuff. I think (scratching head) that the bassist was called Martin Reche (something like that) and he was pretty fine, but I don't know anymore about him. That has always been my favorite Mike song with the group (Two Solitudes is a close second). The lyrics are simple, but they tell the story well. The sound of the bass throughout that entire CD leaves a lot to be desired - it is too trebly. There is some truly funky stuff going on, but you can't really hear it that well. I have said many times that a lot more people would like The Machine Stops if they could actually hear what Mark was playing. Especially the part right before the end where he is going off with Mike - that is pure funk. My holy grail would be a live performance of that song with the bass at the proper settings (Winston, shut up). On to another topic: NINE people still haven't paid for their shirts. I think I have been quite patient about this, but I fronted $1000 to get those shirts done, and I don't think it is unreasonable to ask for my money back in a timely manner. I am not going to name the people publicly (I will e-mail each one), but I wanted to bring it up because of the hat discussion. Yes, people expect to get the merchandise that they pay for, but by the same token, people need to pay for what they are sent. We have a lot of comraderie here and trust one another. Everyone sends things back and forth, all over the world, on good faith. Please don't ruin that sense of trust. I don't want to end up with a sour taste in my mouth, and I'm not mad, but if you know you haven't paid me, please do so soon. Thank you. Lolita P.S. Christien and Joseph, I received your money. ------------------------------ Subject: OK, OK, OK!!!! From: MByrd42 @ aol.com Date: Fri, 10 Jul 1998 09:06:08 EDT You asked for it: NAME: Michael M. And I have to > share this with you: I think People is on of the best Mike Lindup songs > there is!! But it's not so much the song, it's the bass-part. I agree 100%. People is one of my faves, I think the lyrics and the general laid back feeling to all parts of the song make it great. On the bassline front, it takes a lot to leave that many holes in a slap bass line, but it fits perfectly (reminds me a little of way the bassline on Out of sight, out of mind fits that song). On the chorus/flanger thing I have a live video from that time where Mark hits a foot pedal and it suddenly sound like someone is changing practically every setting on the chorus pedal from one end to the other all at once. Its a really weird sound and I don't like it that much at all. A quick question to the bass players out there. I have just got back into playing bass after a 7 year break and I playing the bass line to Hot Water along with one of the midi files from the Web to get some practice. On the midi file it sounds like the last bar of the main riff is G followed by an F followed by an F#. I always used to play it as a G with an E followed by an F. It's difficult to hear which is right against the record as there are so many synth lines playing, how do you guys play it ? There aren't many L42 basslines tabbed on the web, has anyone out there had a go at tabbing any ? Cheers Ade ------------------------------ Subject: Thanks to all responders... Thanks for the Gary Husband Info...Regarding Gary's Keyboard playing..You should try to get, if you don't already have it...a copy of the 1990 CD, "A CERTAIN KIND OF FREEDOM" on which Gary plays a solo piano piece called "There Will Never Be Another You." Phil Gould also has a track on this recording called "A Road Less Travelled" THis CD is a compilation of different artists including Mick Talbot and Steve White of the Style Council, etc... WHich HoldwoRht IOU album has Gary Husband's keyboard work..I though I had all of those IOU ones except the "Road Games" recording. Gary Husband seemed to indicate in "Modern Drummer" magazine that he was working on a solo effort here and there but ..we are still waiting...and will keeping hoping that this eventually happens. Loz ------------------------------ Subject: Europe in October From: Daniel James Date: Fri, 10 Jul 1998 11:49:57 -0700 (PDT) Well this is mostly non-Level 42 related and I may bore some of you, but I thought I'd pass along this info for those of us that are planning on returning to England in October. First of all to Lolita, I found a rather interesting book that you might be interested in. It's full of information on moving to England to work. It's called Living and Working in Britain, and I found it in the local Borders Bookstore, but Amazon has it as well... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0951652885/002-3714170-5651861 For everyone else... This time 'round, I'm planning on spending 2 weeks, possibly even getting an open-ended ticket and doing a bit more traveling. I'd like to make it down to France at least, and maybe even Germany. Jennifer had mentioned a possible interest in doing a bit of traveling as well, and I'd sure enjoy it more if it wasn't me alone (I travel locally by myself all the time, but something about visiting countries where I don't speak the language is a bit daunting). Anyway, this month's issue of Travel and Leisure has an interesting tidbit of information: "Nine European airlines have banded together to create the EurAir Pass (888/387-2479; www.eurairpass.com), available only to U.S. residents. Participants must buy a minimum of three $90 coupons; each is good for a nonstop flight within a network of more than 50 cities in Ireland, England, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Belarus. Coupons must be bought before leaving the United States, but plane reservations can be made in Europe. Unused tickets are nonrefundable and nontransferable." Okay, at $90 a pop with a minimum of $270, it's not exactly a budget buy, but I imagine $90 is probably even cheaper than the Eurostar, and this could give me a chance to see places like Italy and Spain as well, two of the places I'd love to hit. So far, two different weeks for the trip have come up (the first and third weeks in October). It looks like the 1st week is going to be out for me. Whomever is in touch with Eagle Records, make sure you request that Mark be available to tour somewhere in the U.K. during the 3rd week of October :) ------------------------------ Subject: alrighty, then!
