I talked to him following an Allan Holdsworth show several years ago and, besides wanting "to know where he could get a really good steak", he said he wanted to do an album of his own material. He is quite an accomplished keyboardist also for those of you who are not aware (he did a solo piano peice on the first IOU tour that was breathtaking) so hopefully an album by him will surface and would include some keys as well as drums. His only recorded piano solo I'm aware of appears on the first Holdsworth IOU album. He said that he also really enjoyed playing with Level 42! He does appear on a new album by Steve Topping called Time and Distance which is great. Steve Topping is a guitar player that Holdsworth considers to be great so you know from that the guy can play! Check it out! Steve H ------------------------------ Subject: righty / lefty thing From: eric_spiering @ siltronic.com Date: Thu, 09 Jul 98 09:52:40 -0800 Hi, here's my two cents... (how much is that where you live?) i'm a righty, play bass the normal way. i tried it "backwards" to see if that would be easier and my right hand on the frets was stupid, extraterretrial, couldn't tell it was my hand, i had that much control. i think it's easier to play frets with the left hand because that's the hand a righty thinks about. the right hand just goes without thinking so finding a string, playing the bridge or the neck is automatic. most of my thought processes go into what is the most efficient finger to use so i can find the next note. i'm already thinking about the left hand so the thought processes are more fluid. i'm not splitting my brain to think about everthing i'm doing. that's how it works for me. maybe this helps others to understand what's going on with them. but as we all know, we are all unique and different! thank Zeus! Hey, wasnt that "TWO slightyly distorted guitars". Actually, I bought the Tubular Bells CD in London when the ILF crew visited HMV! > Ah, I believe that's from Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" (which was used in > some part as the scary theme music for "Halloween"). That was "The Exorcist", which is about to be re-released in a restored version for it's 25th anniversary. > But what the hell is a "Double Speed Guitar" A guitar recorded with the tape machine at half-speed, then played back at normal speed, doubling the speed/pitch of the instrument. Brian. ------------------------------ Subject: People From: Arjan Meijer Date: Fri, 10 Jul 1998 09:47:02 +0200 Just a short one (and no bio :-)) ) Recently I've been listening to SITL (the album) a lot. And I have to share this with you: I think People is on of the best Mike Lindup songs there is!! But it's not so much the song, it's the bass-part. Listen carefully, it's so great! Very subtle and funky. Only one critical remark: who was in charge of the chorus/flanger when Mark played his solo? The solo is great, but the sound is horrible. Really ruins the solo. I think Mark used these settings live, but on a studio-recording it's way too blurry. Just had to speak up about this ;-) Bye bye, Arjan ------------------------------ Subject: Homepage From: "Green, Laurence F" Date: Fri, 10 Jul 1998 10:59:00 +0100 Hey people, I got myself a homepage! It's my first attempt at this kind of thing! http://homepages.shu.ac.uk/~conslfg Hurrah hurrahh. Whilst we're on the subject of excellent fanzines. I have had about 25 request for Word Machine over there in America!# Now there are 500 people on the diegst (nearly 600) I'm sure a lot of people want to see pictures of very rare material, hear recent thoughts on the band etc. One of the main rules for the fanzine is that it won't go over old information, or just print old interviews. It will all be newly researched stuff. So come on, if your from the UK, or have access to pounds sterling, send a cheque/PO/money order for ?2.00 UK, ?2.50 elsewhere or send cash at your descretion. Made paymeable to L Green. Word Machine Loz Green 110 Abbey Lane Sheffield S8 OBQ England. I have 2 possiblilites for America. I am either going to send 1 person 50 copies and say distribute these. Or have 1 person recieve cheques in dollars, whence upon their reciept, I shall send them a copy of the said publication. I can say one thing for sure. Issue 2 will be EVEN better, with more interview, rarer rarities, and more insughtful information. SO all you USAmericans and Americans mail me if you want a copy with WordMachine America as the heading so I know how many copies I may need to send out there if I choose to use that method.
