As we spoke before, the money was just part of the issue. It is up to the manufacturer to pay up, I don't expect you to have to fork over the cash. The things you have been doing to make up for it are admirable, You definately have gone out of your way. I was just kept out of the loop on some of these "ideas/resolutions" to the problem. What I would really like to see come out of this deal is for them to do with and alternate color scheme that would please most. I even told you that I wud buy the hats that people did not want. Utimately, I will succumb to being the bad guy here. Obviously things were getting long in the tooth. In fact, if i can get a "bit of a break: here, I just got out of the hospital for surgury and am floating on some powererful pain killers over the past several days, and have fell asleep at this keyboard several times during this note. Yep, MK is left handed, yet he plays both Bass and Drums right handed. I guess that it must help the rhythmic side of playing... This was one question I actually remembered to ask him @ the ILF !! Adz: Mark, why do you play right handed? MK: I don't know, I get asked that all the time and I really don't know. It just felt comfortable to play that way. "Our subject today is lighting charcoal grills. One of our favorite charcoal grill lighters is a guy named George Goble, a computer person in the Purdue University engineering department. Each year, Goble and a bunch of other engineers hold a picnic in West Lafayette, Indiana, at which they cook hamburgers on a big grill. Being engineers, they began looking for practical ways to speed up the charcoal-lighting process. "We started by blowing the charcoal with a hair dryer," Goble told me in a telephone interview. "Then we figured out that it would light faster if we used a vacuum cleaner." If you know anything about (1) engineers and (2) guys in general, you know what happened: The purpose of the charcoal-lighting shifted from cooking hamburgers to seeing how fast they could light the charcoal. From the vacuum cleaner, they escalated to using a propane torch, then an acetylene torch. Then Gobble started using compressed pure oxygen, whichcaused the charcoal to burn much faster, because as you recall from chemistry class, fire is essentially the rapid combination of oxygen with a reducing agent (the charcoal). We discovered that a long time ago, somewhere in the valley between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers (or something along those lines). By this point, Goble was having a pretty good time. But in the world of competitive charcoal-lighting, "pretty good" does not cut the mustard. Thus, Goble hit upon the idea of using - get ready - liquid oxygen. This is the form of oxygen used in rocket engines; it's 295 degrees below zero and 600 times as dense as regular oxygen. In terms of releasing energy, pouring liquid oxygen on charcoal is the equivalent of throwing a live squirrel into a room containing 50 million Labrador retrievers. On Gobel's Web page (http://ghg.ecn.purdue.edu/), you can see actual photographs and a video of Goble using a bucket attached to a 10-foot-long wooden handle to dump 3 gallons of liquid oxygen (not sold in stores) onto a grill containing 60 pounds of charcoal and a lit cigarette for ignition. What follows is the most impressive charcoal-lighting I have ever seen, featuring a large fireball that, according to Goble, reached 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The charcoal was ready for cooking in - this has to be a world record - 3 seconds. There's also a photo of what happened when Goble used the same technique on a flimsy $2.88 discount-store grill. All that's left is a circle of charcoal with a few shreds of metal in it. "Basically, the grill vaporized," said Goble. "We were thinking of returning it to the store for a refund." Looking at Goble's video and photos, I became, as an American, all choked up with gratitude at the fact that I do not live anywhere near the engineers' picnic site. But also, I was proud of my country for producing guys who can be ready to barbecue in less time than it takes for guys in less-advanced nations to spit. Will the 3-second barrier ever be broken? Will engineers come up with a new, more powerful charcoal-lighting technology? It's something for all of us to ponder this summer as we sit outside, chewing our hamburgers, every now and then glancing in the direction of West Lafayette, Indiana, looking for a mushroom cloud. Engineers are like that." When I first decided to play, I wrestled with the decision of whether to play lefty or righty (I am left handed). My original decision was to actually play lefty, because my ultimate goal was to play upright, and you need a strong left hand to pluck the strings. I regret that now, because 1)lefty basses cost a lot more money than rightys, 2)they are harder to find (try looking for a five or six string lefty bass that is somewhat affordable) and 3)I need a short scale lefty bass because I have small hands, and that is turning into a search for the holy grail. I suppose I could still switch to playing righty since I haven't been doing it very long, or perhaps buy a righty bass and flip it ala Jimi Hendrix on guitar, but I haven't decided what I want to do yet. I will buy another bass next January when I get my bonus, so I have a few months to decide. BTW, anybody in the market for a lefty Ibanez? I have to sell it because I need a short scale instead (my wrist has been killing me). Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Left-handedness From: Nathania Apple Date: Tue, 07 Jul 1998 08:13:18 -0700 Charl, In response to your query, when I played cello (many years ago) I found that being left handed was quite an advantage, since my dexterity with the left allowed better control when complicated fingering was needed. The bowing was done with the right hand and didn't require as much attention. Not being a bassist, I don't know how this would translate (especially with Mark's slap bass technique). BTW when you see a bassist or guitarist playing "backwards" (ie: with the neck of the instrument pointing toward the right), it is most often a right hander who finds the fingering easier to play that way. Anyway, it's a matter of pure preference, but I know several right handed string musicians who wish they were left handed for those very reasons. I think she's going to be a very, very good player, and I look forward to many battles with Martina, Mirjana, Anna, and the rest, but for now she's just a loud mouth with a power game, IMHO. Of course, humility is a quality I also enjoy in those who are very good at what they do. Arrogance has always been my least favorite of qualities. If you think about it the dominant hand is used to do the least complicated / dexterous part, i.e. strum, particularly in rhythm guitar playing. The least dominant hand is then used to do all of the difficult things like make and change between chord shapes, move up and down the fretboard / strings, hammer on, pull off, trill, slide, bend. OK, OK I know that the strumming hand does a lot more than just strum (particularly MKs), but it does seem to be the wrong way around. Could this be the secret ? I guess that if you are learning from scratch then it's pretty academic as to which way round you play the thing. One thing's for sure, I couldn't switch to left hand this late in life! For those south paws out there (approx. 1 in 5 people) you should realise that you are 18% more likely to have an industrial accident than a right handed person, mainly because most machinery is designed with the righties in mind. And for those interested in etymology, ambidextrous means "double right handed". Personally I'd give my right hand to be ambidextrous : - ) Cheers Ade ------------------------------ Subject: absolutely NON Level 42 From: "Eric J.
