On the 'Staring At The Sun' interview LP Mark says they played the album to their friends and collegues and evryone liked it but most people said, 'drop that song, three words' it seems most people said that the song didnt seem to fit in with the rest of the album. Personnally I always think of three words in the same genre as Cant Walk You Home, both were excellent songs that were the only released tracks that didnt make their respective albums (although we now know there were several unreleased for Pursuit Of Accidents. Speaking of which, in Issue 2 of my fanzine I am hoping to have an article called 'Secrets of the Polydor Masters' mmm mmm sounds good to me. Whilst we're on the subject, what about issue 1 I hear you all cry. Well, Issue 1 is finished!!!! I have some final touches to do, then I get on with production. But don't mail me yet. It is 28 pages of A5 paper, (which is 7 sheets of A4 folded into an A5 booklet) some things have been moved back to issue 2 because of space constraints.) Issue 1 is: - Interview with Boon + full Boonography - Interview with Andy Sojka (including news on the search for the strategy cover etc) - (short) Interview with Mark King (foregoing a longer one in a later issue) - Full Early Tapes Discography including allsorts (strategy master tapes, elite acetates you mention it, its in there) - Article on non polydor master rare tracks. - Latest News Thats is, and it will be in color but it WON'T be exceptional quality until I get a color laser printer sometime next year. Issue 2 is planned to have: - Interview with Andy Sojka part 2 - Chatting with Boon about the Tin Man tracks - Interview with Mike (possibly) - Interview with Phil (possibly) - full 'Level 42' discography - Level 42 on the internet, a review (by Eric) - LevelFest '98 (by Bilal) Kiskstarting the international search for 'Lester Bachelor', the holder of the secrets to the Strategy Cover (he designed it) [When we find him, we'll get details off him, then re-create it ourselves and make out own copies of 'Strategy', 16 years after is should have been released] Issue 3 is in basic planning stage - Pursuit Of Accidents discography - Interview with Paul Crockford - Review of 'One Man' and Mark's tour - Boon's usual contribution - Readers letters! I am going to look for a copy of the mag locally, but don't expect to find it here in the good ol' US of A. In response to Eric Spiering's two letters, Freedom Someday is a great track, and appears on the US CD release of RITF as a bonus track. I have the RITF album on vinyl and it noes not appear on that album. Also Can't Walk You Home is also very nice, I got to hear it for the first time yesterday. I was very happy to find it at a local record store. It appears on the German Compilation album Turn It On. This album is kind of a greatest hits and also includes what appears to be a different live version of Physical Presence. These two tracks alone make it worth the price of admission. To Brian Bowman's posts, I also love the Thomas Dolby album Flat Earth and should be of interest to anyone into Level 42 who likes finely crafted pop music. It's up there with the classic Steely Dan and Donald Fagan releases. Other places in the archives it mentions that Level 42 fans seem to fall into two catagories-the jazz funksters and the pop rockers. I'd have to say that I fall squarely into the jazz funk crowd as I love jazz and fusion. In fact my wife and many of my friends who know my musical tastes are suprised that I like Level 42.(In fact they have invented a motto about my musical tastes-"If you've heard of it, I don't like it"). They are too normal or pop sounding. But this band is just too good and the level of musicianship is just so far above the average pop crowd that you can't help but love them! I just love to listen to really talented musicians and a lot of the best ones seem to be in jazz and fusion. Another band I love that would be of possible interest to L42 fans is Camel. The are a progressive band with some pop sounding albums, namely Breathless and Raindances. Was wondering if there were any other Camel fans out there? Also I am not fimiliar with the track Three Words. Where is it from? I assume from your post it must be a cut from the Starring in the Sun sessions that did not make it on the album. Any info you have would be appreciated. That's all for now-remember "Music is the key to set me free"! What are you thinking? This is a great track! McFly!!? I guess that is what makes this interesting is that we all agree to disagree but can all agree that L42 is an amazing band! They seem to appeal to so many on so many different levels. Anyway, that's how I feel. Steve H ------------------------------ Subject: Another IFL??? No matter, early October is fine with me, and I think it'd be more productive for me to be there at the same time. I'm going to try and take a longer trip this time. I'd like to spend the early part of the trip looking around, and set up some interviews for the early part of the following week (as October 5th is a Monday). I'm hoping that I can stay through the following week and after taking care of interviews, looking for a place to live, and seeing Mark King play live :) :) that I'll be able to hop the Eurostar and spend several days in Paris and maybe fly out directly from France. Depends on what United will charge me for that! Jennifer Reddin had mentioned an interest in going back around that time as well, so perhaps we'll have another mini ILF! I'd say that this one doesn't really need to be planned as the last one was. I'm going to stay at the same hotel this time (The Plaza on Hyde Park) as that worked out great, and if we could just plan on staying in the same area again (or even at the same hotel), we should just be able to hook up informally this time. So Lolita are these dates set for you, or just dates you've got in mind?
