(McConnell AFB)" Date: Mon, 22 Jun 1998 08:32:39 -0500 On Heart on the Line, I honestly don't think they're singing any particular words at all ... and for those of you who have listened to some of Wally's projects, I've always felt this "chant" was an inspired touch by him, even though Mark is the only person listed as writing the song. And are we sure Mike is singing this chant, or is it Wally? Or even Phil? Segue - Speaking of Wally, does anyone who has seen Wally's "tough guy" cover of his Chief Inspector EP think - like I do - that it is about the most ridiculous looking thing ever? It's almost like he's trying to look like a gangsta rapper. One more thing. Thanks to the wonderful L42 website devoted to MP3s, I have now heard (and downloaded) a number of remixes of L42 stuff that I had never heard before. Now I know why that one MIDI file of Love in a Peaceful World sounds like it does (because it never sounded like the LIAPW I knew) ... I think Strike's sample of the Leaving Me Now piano riff is well done ... I hope it starts a flood of sampling of L42 stuff, because it would give exposure to the band (I still dream of a reunion someday ... hey, the Eagles got back together and so did New Order and a bunch of other bands who said they were definitely through). Brian asks: > Could someone please tell a sound studio lingo illiterate person what an > acetate is? An acetate is a "test pressing" made on a cutting lathe, use to evaluate record sound before the 2-track goes to mastering. It starts life as a metal platter coated with lacquer, and is then cut on the lathe using information from the 2-track master tape. Acetates are usually good for anywhere from 3-6 plays on a regular turntable to 10-20 plays on a turntable/arm assembly with exteremely low wear and very high tracking ability. If you own one, clean it (ONLY use steam distilled water, never record-cleaning solutions, as these may contain alcohol) very well, play it once and record it on as many formats simultaneously as you can! BTW, for alla you headz with an IRC client, you can almost always find me on DALnet in the IRCBAR at nights (Pacific time). Pop in, look for MrPink and say hello! -Jeff Micro Kid... speaks digital. So without any delving into well managed archives, and following up a suggestion to listen at them slowed down, I put the CD's onto my Kam 950 dual CD player with 16% pitch control (boring!) and wopped up the volume. My conclusions are as follows:- POA - yes, it does sound like this card, colour, and everything else but I reckon, using my South Coast regional accent detector, what Mark is saying is "Lets go and its a one, two, thre...." and someone else is saying "doh yeah". IMHO! (forerunner to the Simpsons!) HOTL - Although I thought Zachary was cool, It actually sounds like "Up to me its up to me" again IMHO Just need to be able to play them backwards to suss out the hidden cult messages! I'm fairly sure that you can still pick up a copy of the Live at Wembley video (try http://www.cdnow.com or any of the other sources). That will give you an idea of what he used to be like live. In the later videos (ala Guaranteed Live and in Fait Accompli) he is not nearly as animated. In fact, his gum chewing in Guaranteed Live is a bit distracting... :) > Tony asked about the enhanced bass on CS and THC. I believe that I > once read that Mark sometimes re-records the basslines... I think this I think it's also possible that they extract a bassline from a later part of the song (after the normal song fades out). Listen to the last 2 seconds of Something About You and you'll here a different bass line. I never even noticed it before I'd heard the Shep remix where he carries it out and loops it into the middle of the mix. > Opener Alan Parson's Project was good even if they did play to drum > loops every second song. Woah...! APP is touring with them? I'm not much of a Yes fan, but I'd go to see Alan Parsons! If they were the opening gig, then I don't suppose the band was supported by a full orchestra as they have been in the past? > The pop/rockers like Guaranteed and SATS more, and the jazzfunksters > like Early Tapes/POA/SITL more. I'm in the first camp myself, however I've never been a huge fan of Standing In The Light. It's much like Guaranteed for me--I like some select songs alot (Woah, Machine Stops... Excellent jam) but as an album it just doesn't do much for me. I actually prefer Staring at the Sun to Standing in the Light. > I confused. T-Shirts: I got my ILF T-Shirt Friday as a sort of forgotten unexpected surprise. I love it. I forget who designed the shirts, but you did a good thing here. JAZZ CAMP vs. POP CAMP I have a different slant on this: Being a writer, I tend to hone in on the lyrics more than the music, although I do listen to the music. Therefore, hands down, I have to chose the POP era over the JAZZ/FUNK era of Level 42. I mean how can you compare "Billy's Gone" or "Talking In Your Sleep" to "Micro Kid" or "Starchild" when you look at them from this standpoint? Only a few from the jazzier era make the lyrical crossover, in my opinion. "Love Games" would top that list. Just a brief thought. Profiles in Courage: Not to honk my own horn but I was I who began the profiles thread last year (1997), and although it was fun to see all the responses, I got a little heat for the amount of text the thread generated. I would be happy to start that thread again, if there are space objections from the other members. "We're only human after all..." Byrdman ------------------------------ Subject: 42 etc From: N Collier Date: Mon, 22 Jun 1998 23:54:48 +0100 >"42" is so awesome!! CLASSIC CLASSIC Level action on this cut. From >beginning to end. Absolutely - if you're looking for a whole range of bass sounds/textures then look no further than 42 (or F and E). It's all there in one track - a meal in itself. Mark's influences are no clearer than in these tracks. It was great to see some input from Rebecca Johnson on the Digest lately - you've been lurking too long Rebecca, hiding your light under a bushel. If any subscribers haven't heard any samples of Rebecca's bass playing then you really are missing out - she is OUTSTANDING (nice tattoo too). If I had half of Rebecca's talent for bass playing I'd never shut up bragging about it on the Digest! If I can make one observation about Level 42 - though it may not be an entirely fair one - listening to the realAudio clips of Rebecca's band in action you can perhaps see what made Level 42 such a successful sound. I realise that realAudio quality probably doesn't do Rebecca justice but in those clips there are too many musicians striving to be heard above eachother - what Level 42 didn't play was just as important as what they did, in some instances less is more. For years I have really listened to L42 with the ears of an admiring and aspiring bassist. I'm increasingly (with the help of this Digest and its subscribers) being exposed to the many other elements - like Phil's drumming which compliments Mark's up front style so beautifully without competing with it. Finally, I'm coming down off the fence. I've always said it's too difficult to choose a favourite Level 42 track because they're all so different - that's a cop out. The best track is 'Almost There' - it's the one I always anticipate the most when it's turn comes around on the tape.
