Also, if you do read the digest instructions when you join, it actually DOES invite you to read the FAQ's first....... Still, blimey man, don't be so touchy ;-) New suggested FAQ's (fill in the questions your self) 1) 'We're only human after all' 2) Nobody knows who she is. (Although you can't say I havent tried) 2a) She definitly isnt related to Mike 3) No, its the book 'Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy' 4) Something to do with suckling on a pig. 5) Its Jakko Jacksyz, no he did'nt play on the album I would welcome any other suggestions (I fear the worst) Anyway, enough of my cheeky backchat. I'm off to London this afternoon to attend a conference on bridge repair. Still no volunteers for a history and current status of Level 42 on the internet! Also, has anyone noticed in the guestbook on the website a certain, M.King, Isle Of Wight? Who says he just surfed on in. I tried the email address, and what would know, damn, how did he do that? Gotta go, thursday night next, see you then.........LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: Re: License Plate. From: StingFan21 @ aol.com Date: Sun, 21 Jun 1998 09:15:08 EDT Dear Greg, hi! I'm sorry if you feel that people are being snobby when you ask a question that has been asked a million times, but Eric has painstakingly archived all the digests from the past five years just for this purpose. The people who gave sarcastic responses neglected to really say that. If you go to the www.worldmachine.com/level42 site, you can go to the archive section, type in your subject, and it will bring up every digest that answered it. The reason that people got a little carried away is that certain questions have been asked quite a few times, twelve people end up answering the question on the next day's digest and it sort of clogs things a bit. There is nothing wrong with checking the archives first to save time and aggravation. I've been on the digest for three and a half years, and I _still_ check sometimes before I ask something (like the Heart on the Line question). It only takes a few minutes. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Douglas Adams From: Steven Hoebens Organization: TUE Date: Sun, 21 Jun 1998 12:43:11 +0200 I've read the bible(Douglas Adams' Hitch Hiker's guide to the galaxy) a few times now and I really like the humor in it, although I am not a science fiction fan. I'd like to know how intelligent you must be to understand this book. I've had to read back numerous times as I just did not understand what was meant in particular passages. I like to consider myself an intelligent human being, but reading this book makes me feel humble and inferior to people who might have read this book and completely understood it. Or is the book just un-understandable? It's sure got me thinking... I suppose we all > have to agree to disagree, and understand that ultimately we all love > this band. You make some really good points here, Lolita. I, for one, like the jazzfunk side of the group a little better than the pop/rock side. I mean we all fell in love with Mark's wonderful, funky, hip, and unique bass playing. When SATS came out, I was immensely disappointed! For some years until recently, I still didn't like this but when I purchased the Connoisseur Collection with the remixes of 4 SATS tracks, I gained a new respect for that CD and while still not my favorite, I like it a whole lot more than I use to. I do like all Level CD's, some more than others and it really depends on my mood at the time, so if you'll excuse me, I need to go put on 'Lying Still' and play my air bass! Right, then! A bunch of you met Mark on the Isle of Wight, and none of you thought to ask him what Mike was chanting in Heart on the Line?????? ------------------------------ Subject: Guaranteed and Staring At the Sun From: "Joey Vela" Date: Sun, 21 Jun 1998 11:29:29 PDT I agree with Lolita's observation about the "two camps" thing regarding Level 42 fans. I am one of those who fall into both the jazz-funk and pop-rock camps. I appreciate all of the unique elements within each and every Level 42 album because there is quite simply something of merit in each and every one, especially "Guaranteed" and "Staring At the Sun". "Guaranteed" has been taking quite a beating, or so I have observed in my short time on this digest. To me, it is a brilliant album not so much for its melodies or its grooves but more for its energy, and that is of course due to the presence of Allan Holdsworth and Gary Husband. However, I feel that "Overtime" would have been right at home on any of the earlier jazz-funk era albums. "Staring At the Sun" is my favorite Level 42 album. I know many of you Levelheads are going, "What?!" To me, this album had the most beautiful and the most haunting melodies of any Level 42 album (apart from "Leaving Me Now" or "Two Solitudes"). I really love the title track, very different, but you sure can feel the emotion and the darkness. Other highlights include "Take A Look", "Silence", "Two Hearts Collide", "Over There", "Man", and I love the groove on "Tracy". I guess I got a little tired of "Heaven In My Hands", but it is still a good high-energy tune. Also, I was going through a very painful breakup in the fall of 1988, and this album helped get me through it. I love all the Level 42 stuff that came before 1988 because I am afterall a Levelhead as well as a Funkateer and Rubberfan; I love to groove, but "SATS" and "Guaranteed" are truly noteworthy and show the brilliance of a band that could evolve and grow and defeat stagnation by shining the spotlight on their other strengths, energy and emotion. ------------------------------ Subject: POA intro From: Mighty Maomoondog Date: Sun, 21 Jun 1998 14:45:13 +0200 Hi everyone - about the POA intro, I always thought someone was saying something like 'Let's go - this is a wiiild tune...' and then someone else (Mike?) says 'Oh yeah!'. We start with eats and drinks at the All-Star Cafe in Times Square, followed by a bit of record hunting at HMV in Herald Square at about 3-3:30. The missing part of the party is the BBQ. I'm at wit's end re where we will crash. (Jacob Riis Park, anyone?) Let me know if the date is good and if you will come. The address: dfmock @ rocketmail.com. Re Lolita: Yeah, good point regarding the types of levelheads, namely the rock/popsters, the jazzfunkers, and those who are both. I think I am about a 60% rock/popster and a 40% jazzfunker... :) Yay!!! I scored a vinyl copy of Rick Astley's 1991 album "Free", for only R9.99! This album is, of course, the one that contains the two tracks Mark co-wrote with Rick; they are "Be With You" and "Really Got A Problem"... and you can clearly hear Mark's influence in these tracks!!! Yeah, it felt so good reading that "Rick Astley & Mark King" writer credit next to the track's name on the back cover and on the inside liner! :) :) Good album, not as excellent as his first album, but still quite enjoyable. My favourite track is "Move Right Out". BTW anyone interested in some Rick Astley info & digest discussions & MPEG3's to download, Germano Filho's got a site at: http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/5266 Mnr Charl Mocke ============ University of Stellenbosch South Africa Home tel.: +27 21 854 8005 E-mail: 9413693 @ narga.sun.ac.za Mugshot: http://fudd.ard.sun.ac.za/surfer.jpg University Home Page: http://www.sun.ac.za/ ------------------------------ Subject: Suggestion for The Level 42 Digest Member Bio '98!!! From: "Charl Mocke" <9413693 @ narga.sun.ac.za> Organization: Stellenbosch University Date: Mon, 22 Jun 1998 11:08:08 +0200 Hi, me again! A _very_ interesing Digest member bio was done in early 1997, and it proved very successful in getting everyone on the Digest know each other a little better, and enhancing the "family" feeling! :) Now, ever since, more new members have subscribed, and the others' tastes have changed, times have changed, so I'm making a suggestion for a "Digest Members Bio '98" (abbreviated L42DMB'98) to commence, and giving the worldmachine.com server a bit of work. :) Eric What this basically means, is, you copy&paste the following set of formatted questions, if you like them (you can create your own, of course) or add/remove certain questions, and then answer them, and when finished, send it to the Digest! Easy as pie! :) It may be advisable, however, that we don't all send it to ONE digest edition (because of the suspected size), but "spread" it over a few editions. So maybe wait a random few days before you send it? Enough said, here is my suggested format; most of it has been copied out of last year's formats: (plus a few extra's - like an infamous "Confession Booth"!!) **** The Level 42 Digest Members Bio '98 *************************** FULL NAME: [Here you type in your first names & surname.
