There are individual songs I like, but as entire entities, no. A CD with better melodies and bridges than Guaranteed? In my mind two come up: World Machine and Standing in the Light. I think this whole exercise shows very clearly how diverse this digest is. We discussed this about a year and a half ago, but it is worth pointing out again that we seem to have two distinct camps on the digest: the jazzfunksters and the pop/rockers. Many people can hang in both - it is more of a grayscale continuum than a definitive yes/no type thing. However, there seem to be a number of people on both extremes, and those people are the most vocal about their opinions. The pop/rockers like Guaranteed and SATS more, and the jazzfunksters like Early Tapes/POA/SITL more. These two camps are never going to come together, and will never convince each other to do so. I suppose we all have to agree to disagree, and understand that ultimately we all love this band. It makes it even more remarkable what they achieved that they managed to get all of us under one umbrella, no? Long live Level 42. Later. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Heaven in my Hands lives on From: Steven Hoebens Organization: TUE Date: Sat, 20 Jun 1998 13:46:26 +0200 Frans again. Sorry yesterday my title was all wrong, I forgot to write that part. I just wanted to say that this title refers to heaven in my hands having been the goal-scoring tune at FC Utrecht, the Dutch football team from the Netherlands for years. They have got rid of it now, but for many years I was very happy with FC Utrecht scoring since I got to hear the great beginning of heaven in my hands. Short eh? Greetings Frans. As for the bends: it's a deeelight to listen to, and for the beginning of the pursuit of accidents: it's something like "this colour is the bass tune for you" but we both don't understand any more. Maybe one of the English can try and find out??? Steven: Yeah, even with delicate mixing/equalizing (simply turning the volume up many notches, hoping that the rhythm following the exclamations won't burst my ear-drums) it's difficult to hear. Speaking of metaphores, don't you good people agree that Mark's free-style moment in Are You Hearing What I Hear is the most intricate yet? I don't suppose we'll ever understand the deeper meaning of it... just kidding of course. I'm really fond of Guaranteed too. Although it indeed has some songs on it I don't fancy (the Ape for instance) My Father's Shoes really rocks, Guaranteed itself is really good and If You Were Mine is one of my all-time favourites. To Anthony Richards: unlike my brother, I also like "The Early Tapes", but judging from your reaction, you just couldn't do without? 'Bit over the top, perhaps... what's riding on the tail of a comet really like? ------------------------------ Subject: Man..it's good From: Chris Dickman Date: Sat, 20 Jun 1998 19:16:38 -0400 Those people who love to listen to L42 purely for foot-tapping, sing-along qualities only, might want to skip this bit.... For those of you who know a little bit more about music writing and theory might want to think which L42 song intrigues the most. Now without trying to sound like Andrew Lloyd bloody Webber, I'd like to think of myself as "musically literate" to the extent of understanding notations, phrasing, chord structures etc, I'd like to acclaim the band as a real writing talent as well as great musicians. Ok so let's write a pop song... You can't tell me that someone who................ starts a song in a time sig of 7/8 setttles into 4/4 swoops in and out of 3/4, drifts from major and minor like a beauty and finishes a fade with some fantastic sus 4ths....... is just being a bit risky with the writing. .Now "MAN" is not my favourite L42 song, but i've gotta admit, it's a bit clever. The subject of instrumentals has been thrown about recently. If you want an instrumental brilliantly written, don't look much further than "Gresham Blues." You wanna push it.... stick the song in 18/16 add 5#'s and dont forget to sprinkle a few sus 4ths for taste, pop it in a studio at gas "Mark" 6 until golden and then serve. Go on my son! Staring at the sun was a brilliantly written album, even if it's not considered their very best. Anyway, I'll get off my soap box... If you understood that load of bo@!?cks think of some more masterpieces.... If you didn't............just tap yer feet and enjoy it for what it is..Great tunes sang by our favourite band. This song is my 5 year old son's favorite Level 42 song. Why?? Cause his name is Zachary and I have him convinced they are chanting "Zachary, Oh Zachary, Zachary, Oh Zachary...". Even if someone posts the real chant, it will always be "Heart On The Line (The Zachary Song)" to me!! Old instrumental favorites of mine are the epic "Foundation and Empire" and the mysterious "Dune Tune" (which is way too short for my tastes). I fondly recall sitting around the campfire with my friends, with the stars overhead and Dune Tune playing softly in the background. *sigh* Makes one long for the old days! "42" is so awesome!! CLASSIC CLASSIC Level action on this cut. From beginning to end. Giving myself a bit of a break from the band, I just finished reading their biography. Just curious, for those who have read it, am I alone or is it really depressing? I found it hard to read about the very intense ideological conflicts within the band. Boon's insecurity is unsettling, too. Oy vey! John _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Thinking about it, the greater likelihood is that this person has no connection to Level 42, and was unknowingly granted an extremely cool number by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles. In the remote possibility that the car's owner is an area levelhead, does anyone know of this plate number or the potential levelhead owning the car? I saw it on Bradley Avenue in Staten Island NY. thanks, Greg ------------------------------ Subject: A wild thought - cover tape From: Zak Nilsson Date: Sun, 21 Jun 98 00:21:02 -0700 On 6/20/98 3:00 AM, eric_spiering @ siltronic.com doodled: >just an idea... i have a four track tape and PC digital multitracker. >would it be possible to get tapes from everybody and make cover songs? heh heh...it's already been done and it's being done again...the first one was called Cover 42: An Impeccable Groove, and the new one's called Cover 42: Level With Me. Bill Wilson is the man with the plan, I suggest whoever wants a copy of this hot little item email him at billw @ xpense.com. Of course, what's a shameless plug without some self-indulgence? I then played it back at various slower speeds, including the slowest speed possible. At the slowest speed, the chorus clearly seems to be: "Sought the me, I sought the we." What might sound like "suck" at the normal speed, is obviously "sought" at the slowest speed. The "we" is especially hard to hear at normal speed, but it is obvious at an extremely slow speed. Some of the "we's" have snare hits covering them up, but there is an obvious difference between "me" and "we" at the slowest speed. If you know any DJ's or anyone that owns or has access to a pro CD player, or a player with an adjustable speed, you might want to give it a listen on that. ~Wayne --WebTV-Mail-1298514073-2880-- ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V98 #164 From: gbsc @ vossnet.co.uk (great britain ice hockey supporters club) Date: 21 Jun 1998 08:10:47 -0000 Hi to all, Just reading through the digests and feel Frans is getting a bit of a hard time for his comments re Early Tapes. Although I totally love the Album for it's raw energy and real Jazz Funk feel, some people maybe prefer good lyrics and tunefull harmonies. As I said in my last mail it would be a boring crappy world if we all had the same feelings. By the way Guaranteed (my least favourite album) still has some good points to it. The energy on if you were mine is incredible and the build up at the end with Gary Husband's drum solo, kicks ass!! My fathers shoes, although not typicallly 42 sounding, is a beautifull song with superb lyrics. My personal favourite is Seven Years and that great bass Mark lays down at the start. I agree not the best album but surely the bottom line (or should that read bass line??!!!) is that it's one more Album we have got by the best band in the world. I was sorting some bits out in my loft/attic and stumbled across an old magazine issue of the Level 42 fan club that I joined. It really brought back some memories. I was wondering if any of you out there joined up?? Finally, an apology if I ruined a few peoples weekends by asking such a stupid and silly question (what a pratt I am!!) I should of realised this question has been asked so many times on the internet. I should have looked into my crystal ball(S) and forseen that when I acquired the internet I should NOT under ANY circumstances NEVER EVER ask the question WHAT DOES MARK KING SING IN SOMETHING ABOUT YOU. Hey, maybe all new digest subscribers could be sent a list of questions not to ask ie the above question, where does the bands name come from, a car park?? who is Joe Daflo's was he the fifth member of the band??? or that all time classic why did they call their album Level 42???? Do you think I should resign from the digest?? Never darken Joe Daflo's door again???(whoever he is !) Or maybe I should beg Mark for forgiveness?? "answers on a postcard please" Your in deep distess Sorry, Allan MK "were only human after all" !! ------------------------------ Subject: Rebecca's gig ...REVIEW From: "jeff mahoney" Date: Sun, 21 Jun 1998 18:55:25 +1000 Hi all Imagine an international food festival about 100000 people and Sydney's skyline as a backdrop and right in the middle of it all THE TREATMENT featuring the wonderful REBECCA JOHNSON on bass and vocals. First I took the intro from CD and then I started to boost up the volume. But with that also the noise in the background became louder. So I started again. To save time and diskspace and to prevent any losses I first mixed the left and the right channel and worked with a mono file. Again I boosted up the voices and louder became the background noise (Again). But I think I got it figured out, after filtering out the noise. This filtering also changes to voices. It makes them sound more like computervoices. So I'm not 100% sure (Who ever is ??) but I think it's this. CARD IS WILD, TWO, THR.... and someone else says OH YEAH CARD can also be CAR but after listening a few times I'm pretty sure there's a D at the end. I still Have the wave files if somebody want's them let me know, not too many of you I hope because it's 1/4 MB unfiltered + 1/4 MB filtered. So 1/2 MB big. Can't make MP3 yet. Is there a program what can transform from Wav => MP3 Just remember, Don't worry about tomorrow, just live forever now Ronald
