Sorry, but a claim of 100% certainty demands a degree of pedantry only I can supply. From: Steven Hoebens > I'd like > to ask people if there is anyone who does NOT think the early tapes is > the least good CD L42 created... Oh yes. The Early Tapes is majestic - flawed in numerous ways, but the essence of what I loved about the band. The least good L42 CD (if one could even call it good)? The wretched Guaranteed. AG ------------------------------ Subject: The Guvnor says. . . From: "Charles Caraker" Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 07:34:21 -0400 This is, I think, the answer for Allan Petrie's question. At the end of the SAY video, Mark looks into the camera and sings the line "We're only human after all -o-o-ah" from the second chorus. This is a very cool thing to be saying, since it kind of looks like someone made a mistake by showing his mouth moving, without the corresponding sound. Did anyone get anything different for that? Also, while on the subject of myterious lines, what are they chanting in the background of Heart on the line? How about what Mark and Mike say at the beginning of The Pursuit of Accidents? For the record, if I had to choose a favorite instrumental, it would be the Pursuit of Accidents. The bass is absolutely incredible. I'd love to see that performed. Is that on video somewhere? Certainly not in an episode of Solid Gold ! :) TCOY, Charles ------------------------------ Subject: Instrumentals; Tony Levin From: "Joey Vela" Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 06:18:02 PDT I agree with Steven about "Pursuit of Accidents" being a great instrumental. I think that it would make a great theme song."POA" may be too often overlooked and overshadowed by more uptempo instrumentals like "Mr Pink" and "43". About Tony Levin, he is one of the all-time greats and the Grandmaster of the Chapman Stick. I've never seem him with King Crimson or Peter Gabriel :(, but I was fortunate enough to see him with Paul Simon on the "Born At the Right Time" Tour in 1991. That was one of the greatest live shows I've ever seen, and it featured one of the greatest touring bands ever assembled including Levin, Steve Gadd (also appeared in "One Trick Pony"), and Michael Brecker. If you missed it, you can catch on video. Regards, Joey Vela ------------------------------ Subject: Favorite Instrumental From: Lolitaj @ aol.com Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 09:54:00 EDT My favorite instrumental is 43 as well, but I'm surprised that no one mentioned Return of the Handsome Rugged Man. That song is the most 'jazz fusionesque' song they have ever done IMO. Just listen to Phil's drumming - its outta sight! They were very tight on that song. Another favorite of mine is Pursuit of Accidents. It contains my favorite Mike solo. As far as disliking The Early Tapes, I totally disagree. Yeah, the sound quality isn't up to par, and the vocals suck, but the grooves are hitting the mark. Paradise is Free is one of my favorite songs, as a matter of fact. They use great, warm chords on that CD, and I always prefer a more heartfelt sound than a totally polished one anyway. My greatest example of this is the two late 70's Steely Dan CDs. Aja is considered one of the best engineered CDs of all time, and it is indeed a masterpiece. Everyone and their mother is on it, and it is perfect as far as the mixing and the technical aspects, but I still like Royal Scam better. That CD has rawer sounding songs, and they are more inviting to me. Aja seems remote in a way. That's how I feel about Guaranteed versus The Early Tapes. Guaranteed and Forever Now are too polished for me - I like that hungry sound. I suppose that is the natural evolution of a band, but that's why I like live shows better. On another note, I bought a bass clarinet yesterday! I suppose I can now be considered a musician again (singer's joke). I am totally psyched! I will be the third horn player in my band when I'm not singing, and will basically mimic any trombone parts. I haven't played in seven years, but when I played yesterday it was like I had never stopped. All the fingerings came back to me. Who knows - when we have another Levelfest jam session, maybe I'll bring it along. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Early Tapes From: "Green, Laurence F" Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 14:45:00 +0100 Hello, I would to congratulate, 'What is Mark mouthing at the end of the Something About You Video' as it isnow confirmed as being the most often asked question on the digest! Tally ho all round for the old chap, it's a great question but, 'I think they got their name from a car park' is pushing it close for second. ;-) IM only kidding you all. Who, what, how anyone can think Early Tapes is the worst Level 42 album is quite beyond me!!!! (please bear in mind that I have been studying Early Tapes recently!). Early Tapes is the esscence of the band, the life blood. Without it Level 42 would be nothing, they would never have formed. So hurrah for Early Tapes. Besides, it was so raw, so funky, just how music should be, now I don't want to thwacckkkkk a hornets nest with an oar, but 'Pursuit Of Accidents' does NOT rate highly with the group. Now lets be fair here, as Pursuit of accidents is clearly one phenomenal album, but we have to judge it against OTHER level 42 albums. Now lots of people disregard 'The Chinese Way' completely, that leaves 'You Can't Blame Louis', 'Weave Your Spell', 'Eyes Waterfalling', 'Last Chance' and 'Are You Hearing' now blimey, hang on, I think Im changin my mind, thats one monster set of tracks, goodness me I just did'nt realise, no I have to reason with myself, and take a more hollistic approach to the album, its certinaly a contender for 'not the best' Level 42 album, also unfortunatly, 'worst cover', even worse than Running In The Family which I have calculated would have sold over 20% more copies if the cover had been better, mind you, 'Guaranteed' wasnt hot either was it? When you think of the classic 'Level 42' you just cant beat that, we won't even consider the possibility of an album cover being better than that. But all the early singles, 'Out Of Sight'woooahah what a scorcher, a real work of art, Chinese Way, Weave You Spell blimey what I wouldnt give for a MINT copy of Weave your spell (we don't count the cover of the Early Tapes as it was purposefully bland) well, I think the band went backwords, 'The Chant Has Begun','Hot Water' not exactly complicated covers, 'Micro Kid' offers some solace for the aestheticlly thirsty eye, but you can't really just stick an atomic explosion or a wave on the cover of a 12" and gain artistic credibility? Blimey 'O Riley I forgot 'Starchild'!!! CLassy or wot! I can't write forever anyway so Hey guess what, I'm in London for a conference on Sunday and Monday night! On my own (Sob) still, I'll have alook around for record shops. Here are a scant few of my favorite metaphors. We all realize that song lyrics are actually poety, right? "And like the rain that draws a cloud across the sun The tears roll on.." -"Lying Still" (probably my all-time favorite L42 song!) "So take these boots that shine like Judas' silver And all these sad reflections of lost, untraveled roads While the rain falls on a field of bones and roses Give me back my father's shoes and let me walk in those" -"My Father's Shoes" "Across the page (across the ages) The moving hand of hisory bleeds For a kinder eye to see us Not as we are but as we dream" -"A Kinder Eye" "We ride the train of events We never make our destination Never making any sense" -"Two Solitudes" "He said that art was only longing" -"A Kinder Eye" "I was lonely going nowhere Drowing on dry land I was almost stranded there A shipwreck in the sand" -"Heaven in my Hands" "As the dawn leaves its tears To wash the dry valley The tears of a woman Can wash a man's soul" -"Lasso the Moon" Cheers, all! Nathania apples @ value.net [let's also not forget: "Was there meaning to your moaning or were you just mean in the morning when you murdered my scrambled eggs", from Boon's "Kick Or The Kiss" -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Re: MOD's From: Chris Staunton Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 15:27:46 -0400 > Yeah I have noticed that MOD files are still alive, even making a > sort of "come back" in some sense. The huge sizes of these MOD > files killed it... I just have to drag out my remaining non-broken arm and tell everybody, MODs (specifically S3M, XM, and such) rule! I have a huge collection of really cool S3M's and MOD's of all styles, which will share with anyone who's interested. Winamp is a great player, but there has never yet been a Windows player capable of playing these things the way the were tracked. The only way to hear them in glorious stereo/surround/up to 32 tracks is to use a dos player like Cubic. I've been collecting these for years, and they did try to take over my hard drive at one point. But I've never seen one over 1.5MB, and some even have singing in them! Anyway, just letting you know, these things can be very cool, with the right player! ------------------------------- Chris Staunton chriss @ pcsupplies.com ...gotta get back to BASSics... ------------------------------- ------------------------------ Subject: Mark's silent comments From: Chris Dickman Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 17:49:11 -0400 Allan Petrie wrote: > What the hell is Mark saying to the camera at the end of the Something > About You.. Yep, its still there. A few people commented on the co-incidence as we walked up Union Street on that magical day in May. > What the hell is Mark (The Guvnor!) saying to the camera towards the > end of the Something About You Video (the bit where he is sitting on > the train) I think he is mouthing "Wer'e only human after all........lll" Incidently, I only sussed out a while ago that the lady in that vid was Cherie Lunghi, of the British Kenco coffee ads, The Manageress, etc.... Instrumentals , my fave is Dune Tune (great mellow groove). I think Eyes Waterfalling would have made a good Instrumental if no-one had thought of any lyrics! > My favourite moment of a L42 song is from the remix of Two hearts > collide (Sorry I'm just a sucker for a good remix), you know the part > at the end where the base sounds SO GOOD !!!!! Mabye it's Tom Lord Alge > who is responsible for this but who cares ??? I've latched onto this as well. More enhanced bass also crops up at the beginning of "Take a Look" 12" and "Children Say" 12". Is it the remixers work, or have they just pushed forward the mix channel from the masters?. It does sound cool, whatever the situation And Adz + Ranger, what colour kung-fu suit do you wear, then? Morgan seems to be in bass heaven in photo 14, and Kristen knows a compromising position when she can get into one, photo ten (great shot Kristen). An offer to North American levelheads; Would you like to borrow the White Funky for making your own copy? I will lend this cd out strictly for the purpose of copying the music for your own enjoyment. Once you have copied it, please return it to me for further lending. It has live recordings from a gig in '83, in fair quality. It seems that Mark was effect happy in those days. The bass is drenched in flanger and delays in some passages. There are some interesting lyric changes in Love Games. If you are interested, send an email message to me with your street address and telephone number. Frans, what are you getting at with the following sentence? >I'd like to ask people if there is anyone who does NOT think >the early tapes is the least good CD L42 created... If you're trying to ask people if their opinion is that Early Tapes is the worst Level 42 cd, - First of all please don't mince words, just come out and write it. - Second, I don't know how you could be so deluded to conceive that this is L42's worst. These recordings display the boy's raw, unadulterated talent. One after another the tunes have impeccable grooves, memorable melodies. Much more entertaining than some of their over-produced pop. What's your opinion? Heat protective gear on...
