But we've got to love it as its them! Three Words is just a pure pop song ... and part of the reason Level 42 never made it all the way in the U.S. was the refusal to include songs like "Three Words" and single releases, not to mention putting that particular song on the dark, moody "Staring at the Sun" album. SATS was an album only a true 42 fan could appreciate, unlike its two predecessors - World Machine and Running in the Family, which were made for a broad appeal. Of course I'm biased. I think Three Words is a good, simple track that had a better chance at being a hit than Tracie did (in the U.S., anyway). My own favourite instrumental would be "The pursuit of accidents" as the rhythm is very catchy and it sure gets me up! I'd like to ask people if there is anyone who does NOT think the early tapes is the least good CD L42 created...'Cause we think all CD's are great, but I don't like TET as much as we do the others. Also, I heard someone say that Mark King talks in metaphores a lot. Of course, a lot of metaphores have been used in the songs of Level42. At first, she won't let him walk her home because she thinks he's too lowly ("I'm just a boy / Not what you're used to"). Therefore Ranger and I have been busy over the last month or so, building the first (and only) Level 42 Dedicated MP3 site. This site plays host to sixteen full length CD quality music files related to Level 42 that you can download for free. If you don't have a player, you can also download Winamp from this page. These music files are either rare tracks that most of you will not of heard or tracks that have been requested since Adz placed a small MP3 page at Angelfire. We have a list of many more requested tracks that will eventually be available for you to download. There is also an email request facility for anyone who would like to see a MP3 there in the future. So, you want the URL now then? http://listen.to/level42 If you do visit this page and download one, two or all of these files, all we would like you to do is sign the guestbook and let us know what you think. Micro kids!! Finally dragged myself away from the World Cup (come on England!! & USA & Holland any other Levelhead countries involved!!) Can anyone answer these questions : What has Mike Lindup been doing since the split?? Is there still a restauraunt a few doors along from Joe Daflo's called Thumbs up (coincidence Ehh??) It was there two years ago. If so does Mark have his finger (sorry thumb!!) in this pie as well as Joe Daflo's??? What the hell is Mark (The Guvnor!) saying to the camera towards the end of the Something About You Video (the bit where he is sitting on the train) With regards to the person who wrote from the US about the bands reputation in Britain, well as far as i can remember when Level 42 first surfaced, ie Love meeting/love games etc a lot of people thought the music was pretty cool and I guess as the Jazz Funk thang was perhaps a bit underground/specialized, listening to them and groups such as Incognito and Freeze was quite trendy. Obviously, even then it wasn't everyone's thing so some thought they were a bunch of aresholes, but hey! the world would be boring if we were all the same!! I think as they became more commercial and received more airplay and chart recognition it was a case pretty much of love them or hate them. This was a shame as if these people had listened to a whole album they would have realized just how talented the band were and how varied the music was. I certainly feel that the music was much more Jazzy and Funky on the Early Tapes, certainly more commercial on Running In The Family and certainly more rock orientated on Staring At The Sun and Guaranteed (partly due to Gary Husband, Jacko and the late great Alan Murphy). Forever Now, I thought, was the band going back to their funky roots and songs such as forever now, romance and all over you had a real funky groove to them. Finally, to the person that mailed in about instrumentals my faves are 43 Theme To Margaret and Love Meeting Love (instrumental). Live for the groove till that sun goes down!! He was so humbled when I told him he was my greatest influence and promised to listen to my stuff. Mike was more interested in my Aussie accent and Gary gave me the biggest compliment of all when a mutual friend, a great female singer from Australia who I worked with here in many bands, who had moved to London and ended up being the backing singer for Beverly Craven and working in the studio with Peter Cox from Go West and was also Gary`s next door neighbor so she brought him to one of my gigs at The Marquee Club and Gary was dancing in front of me when we played 'Hot Water' (which i dedicated to him) and after the gig he said he`d love to play with me and wanted the gig. The huge sizes of these MOD files killed it a big before (when we were limited to 40MB hard disks!!) but these days with larger storage capacities, that's not so much of a problem anymore. The big advantage of MOD files over MIDI files is that you can produce *exactly* the sound you want by sampling it. MIDI files are limited to the sounds on the listener's sound module / tone generator. Also, you don't need expensive equipment to listen to MODs, with a plain sound card and amplifier (and a good MOD file!) you get sound results that compares EXTREMELY well to a MIDI-file-and-expensive-sound-module setup. Even new MP3 players (like WinAmp) are now supporting MOD files for playback as well! Also, MOD files are, in some aspects, easier to write than MIDI files. I wrote about 60 MOD files a few years ago. If anyone is interested in the list, e-mail me, and I'll e-mail it to you back. There is, however, only 1 L42 MOD file I wrote (Children Say) and it sounds poor. :( Eric wrote: > [personal info & demographics of Level 42 Digest subscribers have > been posted at various times in the past five years. But I'll leave the announcement for him to make (supposedly in today's (this) digest). :) Bye from Africa, Charl __ __ __ __ (__) (__) (__) (__) __ __ (__) (__) Mnr Charl Mocke ============ University of Stellenbosch South Africa Home tel.: +27 21 854 8005 E-mail: 9413693 @ narga.sun.ac.za Mugshot: http://fudd.ard.sun.ac.za/surfer.jpg University Home Page: http://www.sun.ac.za/ ------------------------------ Subject: From: "Charles Caraker" Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 03:29:32 -0400 Greetings all. I am a fairly new subscriber and have enjoyed reading everyone's comments for the past few weeks. Here is something you might find interesting, especially Jeff Mahoney and Bilal who like To be With You Again as much as I do. About the time RITF was popular, a local tv station used the beginning of TBWYA as background music for the introduction of the afternoon movie. Also, the beginning of SAY was used on another local tv station as background music in a commercial for a used car dealer. The local movie theater played World Machine (or atleast the first several songs) on a fairly regular basis. These are not the best possible uses for such grand music. However, it did expose a lot of people to a great band who otherwise would have missed them completely. Many times I overheard people say that the music was cool, but they had no idea who it was or, "Isn't this the song with that evil clown in the video?" Sad, but true. Looking back it's so bizarre. . . Charles P.S. So, who is Roy Castle, and where was he? ------------------------------ Subject: MP3 From: "Green, Laurence F" Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 09:18:00 +0100 Hello, I think that MP3 site is a great idea, but just for yuor information, 'Jung' IS on the Resurgence version of 'Changes'; it just isnt credited as being there. In fact, Jung is the most prolific track by ML appearing in basically every solo thing he ever did. 'Was it on the 4 track promo CD?' I can't remember off the top, I don't think it was though. Speaking of which, I got hold of a Polydor promo cassette of 'Changes' from before the album had been titled. The cat number and details are: Mike Lindup ALBUM Now the tracks are the same order as the album I think, they may be a couple mixed around, but I don't, in fact I know Jung isn't there, which makes Spirit Is Free the most prolific Mike song. As for the tracks themselves, they seem the same, but it's hard to tell. It IS hard to tell! Listen to the Early Tapes LP, then the CD. Then time sandstorm on both, WHAT, WHERE DID THAT COME FROM!!!! IS anyone going to send me the time for Early Tapes LP?Please? Anyway, going...........................LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: to be with you again..again From: "jeff mahoney" Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 18:41:18 +1000 Hi all Last night i commented that to be with you again is my favourite song but .........i don't like any remixes of the song and its not my favourite video as well. the video is a shocker. You cannot fiddle with perfection. There has not been much discussion about level clips so which are your favourite clips. It is interesting that my fav song is not my fav vid. Leaving me now is a great video. something about you.... its over..they are all great but to be with you again....... no thanks. What do you guys think. an impeccable groove cheers from sydney and chi cha jeff
