I was just having the exact same conversation about Trace Elliot on Churchbass, which is a a digest for Christian Bassists (what next !). When Trace installed compression in the Mark V range of gear, it just didn't sound the same. Then with SMX Hi and Low compression, they lost it alltogether. If only I had the old Mark 4's, they were brilliant. So what do we think to All Saints, better than the Spices or not ? I'm off to buy the album on Saturday. :-) Jason Bell - Web Designer/Chapman Stick Player Email : jason.bell @ dial.pipex.com http://ds.dial.pipex.com/jason.bell http://www.xoom.com/Sticky ICQ : 4409821 ------------------------------ Subject: Gould Brothers Departure From: paul fucito Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 07:11:58 -0500 In a NJ newspaper that I read at the time of the break up claimed that the brothers were leaving "because of the stress and nervousness of touring..." That's the same reason why XTC never tours.. They are too intimidated and nervous (at least Andy Partridge). I'm not sure about friction since Boon contributed to the writing of "Staring At The Sun" and Phil returned for "Forever Now". Then again....... paul F ------------------------------ Subject: LevelBest From: "Bowman, Brian J. (McConnell AFB)" Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 11:18:17 -0600 Just a thought on LevelBest, I don't believe LevelBest was designed for the established fans who have all the albums anyway (and had every song except Take Care of Yourself). LevelBest, to me, was designed for the person who might have heard a couple of Level 42 songs but really was never exposed to them beyond Something About You and Lessons in Love, etc. It's the Reader's Digest concept. For fans like us, however, LevelBest is a bit annoying. I agree. I just think Polydor was trying to widen the audience a bit and I think the intent was that TCOY was supposed to be a big hit (then Alan Murphy died and promotion just stopped, as I understand it). Topic #2 - least favorite songs on albums ... interesting thread. I'm sure to get flamed for some of these ... Guaranteed - The Ape Forever Now - title track (it just doesn't fit with the rest of the album) Staring at the Sun - Tracie World Machine - none Running in the Family - Lessons in Love Standing in the Light - none True Colours - Hot Water Level 42 - Why are you Leaving? Pursuit ... -- Been a long time since I've heard that album, but none I think ------------------------------ Subject: 007 Fans!!!! From: paul fucito Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 12:15:12 -0500 Over a year ago I discovered how many of you were James Bond fans when I asked about Level 42 and if they were ever approached to do a Bond theme.. They never did one.... I just discovered a great album for those of you who love Bond music and it's available in the UK and USA. It's called "Shaken And Stirred - The David Arnold James Bond Project" and features covers of the songs. Some are spot on and others are interpretations. Martin Fry of ABC does an amazing version of Thunderball, Chrissie Hynde nails Live And Let Die and you'll even find Iggy Pop covering Louis Armstrong's We Have All The Time In The World..... A must for all 007 fans "F .... paul F" ------------------------------ Subject: Least Favorite Songs From: "Charon Acheron" Organization: STYX Innovations Unlimited Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 14:03:03 -0500 I like this thread... Ok. Here goes for me: A Pharaoh's Dream -Too corny and goofy sounding The Ape - The most out-of-place song on the album! The Chinese Way (Extended)-I don't love the song, but it's like a beautiful symphony next to the nasty remix! That's about it for me. I really *do* like everything else! The track is called "I had peace" (?) but I canīt > remember the performer... Has anybody heard anything about that? The track in question is "I Have Peace" by Strike, a European techno/rap outfit, more famous for their UK top 5 hit "U Sure Do" a couple of years ago. The song made the Top 20 in the UK during the summer last year. They have credited Phil, Mark and Wally as writers, along with their people. I have the CD single, and the annoyinng thing about it is that the "Leaving Me Now" piano rift is only evident on the Original Mix. All guest remixers decided to omit it from the other 6 tracks in favour of a more upbeat dance feel (losers!) I would also like to know if anybody recalls L42 doing "I Can't Walk You Home" at any of their live gigs. I only started seeing them "live" from 1984, and have never heard it at any time. I love this track for the bass work and Mike's brilliant 'scat' effort, even better than the "Love Games" scat (and also a rift from "You Can't Blame Louis" - yet another example of evolution!) ******************************************************* "Dis-information......That we take for the truth" Mad Monk mad.monk @ mcmail.com "If it moves.............Funk It!" Simple. The mix. Sounds like I agree with the mix, but there's just something that sounds so classic about the song. > True Colors - Kouyate (Touch choice, I love the entire album, but I guess > my aversion to songs with spoken word sections applies here) Wow. This is one of my favorites from True Colours. I'd got with the Chant for sure (anyone else notice this video is in Mono on their Level Best video?) > World Machine - Dream Crazy (again, a tough choice, but I think this is > the weakest song on the album) No way--gotta be It's Not the Same for us... > Running in the Family - It's Over (Good song, just too long and depressing) I like it. Being a drummer myself, I found it very interesting > to watch PG hit the hi-hat with his left hand and the snare with his > right. And then he would cross over on other tunes! This is one of the most difficult aspects of copping Level 42 tunes. When my band first started attempting "Love Games", it just wasn't grooving. I showed my drummer LAW, and his first impression was that Phil was a left-handed drummer playing right-handed. I had no idea whether that was true, but I told him I thought he did it that way because it was the only way to get that feel. I had to press and press, and although it was awkward for him, he forced himself to play it the way Phil did, and voila! It was grooving like it should! This is why Gary, an otherwise impeccable drummer, just couldn't make that song (and a few others) work. And, as an added note, my drummer friend has since become reknowned locally for his "pretty hi-hat work". Of course, he never tells where it came from! We should organize this a bit. On the subject of the Chinese way; friends, you brake my heart. Especially the live versions of the Chinese Way are great and really full of energy. It is one of my fav. songs to play along on the bass. Especially the refrain (is this an english word ?) ....I would never lie etc.. is great. All you bass players have to check out the bass chords in relation to the vocal parts, and the way Mark plays this part differently on each live version. Put your stereo as loud as you can, play along, and pretend you're on stage.. From: Toby Fisher Date: Fri, 23 Jan 1998 01:35:36 +0000 HI folks. Well, as requested in the initial message, here's a bit about me. My name is Toby Fisher, I'm 21 years old and in my first year of a computing degree at the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside, here in Hull. I think the first Level42 song I heard was 'Chineese way' and loved it! I bought the 'Level Best' album on cd in, I think it was about 1993 or so. I work sometimes as a d.j. in the Students' Union bar and regularly play such songs as 'Sons and daughters', 'Chineese way', and quite a few others. I found the list by reading the list of lists sent out on news.lists.misc. So, there we are, a bit about me. -- 73, de Toby Fisher: email: toby @ cottingham.u-net.com tel:01482-463253; Homepage, http://www.personal.u-net.com/~cottingham Nettamer, the best dos-based ppp package around; visit http://www.nettamer.net/ and find out for yourself! Yep, it sure is. I like the intro jammin' of Mark and Phil at the begin of "Wings of love" very much. Phil starts with a disco bassdrum. Than gettin' on a faster snaredrumming. Mark comes in a sneaky way in, and the jam is there. Good timin' and fast groovin'. That's the way (ahu, ahu), i like it (K.C.). What do you think of the synchronic percussion break at the middle of that song? Take care of yourselfs. Henri.
