From: "Lisa Devlin" Date: Fri, 12 Jun 1998 13:15:05 -0000 Hi fellow fans. As a new member I thought you might be interested to know that it is all Mark King's fault that I am getting married! I met my bloke when he was playing bass in a local band, and I asked to have a go in it - I played a bit of Hot Water (predictable, eh?) Anyway, he says over the mike 'i've just met a bird who can play Level42 better than me!' and there was the start of a beautiful friendship!!!!! By the way MK himself was quite chuffed about this when we met him after the Portsmouth Guildhall gig in 94. Or maybe he was just being polite, I don't know. Not off base at all, Elizabeth! :) Though I've only had experience with MIDI for a few months, I'll try to explain it in some simple terms... ----- "MIDI" stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface (developed in the early 90's), and is a "way" for musical instrument to "talk" to each other via or to a computer. Digital language is, of course, involved. MIDI is _not_ analog sound signals, rather "control" messages which controls a MIDI-compatable instrument or computer. A MIDI file is a collection of these MIDI control messages (called "events"), written with the use of a MIDI keyboard, to play back on your computer. For this, you need a sound card & speakers, at least. With just a sound card you can listen to the MIDI files using several ways: (1) FM OPL3 Synthesis, which sounds bad, (2) Software wave table, which sounds very good but you need a friggin' "Warp 10, Scotty!!" processor to run it. (I.e. at least 166 MHz) With a sound card daughterboard called a "Wave Table" you can use that to listen to the MIDI files, and this sounds very good. However, the best is to use a MIDI sound module. This produces the best sound quality. To write MIDI files, you need a MIDI keyboard. Back in the old days, there were MOD files. These used sound samples to produce the sounds, instead of controlling a MIDI sound module. They also used tracks, but were much larger in size than MIDI files, and had other mayor disadvantages to MIDI files. I remember, I tried to write "Children Say" once in MOD format, and it came out bad!! :) ------ This is only a stripped explanation of what MIDI is, there are much more info available from the internet. Try out the following site: http://www.midiweb.com/ I must stress here that there are *several* sites. This is one that I found must complete, from basic MIDI terms & explanations, to the mire techno stuff, as well as a huge collection of MIDI files. You can also mail me for more info on MIDI file writing / whatever. Sean Green (a digest subscriber) got a MIDI site full of great MIDI files, and yes, some L42 MIDI files as well. I think him and myself are the two most prominent L42 MIDI file writers on the digest. On his site, you will find all of his L42 MIDI files, as well as mine. The address is: http://www.flash.net/~questps/midi.htm If you like, I can mail you my 3 MIDI files (Guaranteed, 2BWYA, LIAPW) or you can download them from his site. I plan to write "Freedom Someday" next. Well, I do feel really old as most people I talk to are too young to remember the band or just simply forgot them !?! BUT>>> Last night (Thurs) I had a pleasant experience..... Around 02:00 I was travelling back home on the Oxford bypass (A43 ?) from my gig near Reading and I stopped at one of the late night greasy spoon cafes for a bacon sandwich I entered the cafe and the first thing the guy behind the counter said to me was "Level 42, F#$%ing fantastic band mate". I wondered why he said this and then realised I was wearing my ILF Tshirt. We sat and chatted for a while about "his favourite band". Some people DO remember them with passion !!! Adz P.S. Tom Brown - I subscribe to Bassist, It is a top mag I think Bass Player is a US mag that is available from certain shops. I do remember seeing it @ Tower in London @ the ILF extraveganza !! I live in portland oregon, US. i have been a L42 fan since i heard something about you on the radio back in 84. I thought is was so good i went out and bought the album that day (i didn't realize how lucky i was to be able to do that!) that album was so good (i copied the vinyl to tape and wore out three tapes listening to it) that i bought everything else i could find anywhere. love it all! about the why are you leaving lyrics: - only lies need defending - when the dawn breaks tomorrow - won't just come back again - and i'll be there i never got to see the band perform live. i was in denver when they were opening for tina turner. i was sick in bed with a viscious sinus infection the day of the concert and couldn't make it. anyone out that way see the concert? i think the stats of members request is a good thing. it would be a gracious and generous thing for the administrator of the digest to consolidate the info and report it back to us all! here's me: name: eric spiering age: 28 residience: portland OR, USA occupation: engineer (sorry can't save the planet!) first L42 song heard: something about you it's a start anyway. eric [personal info & demographics of Level 42 Digest subscribers have been posted at various times in the past five years. To my knowledge, there's no single "list" of everyone's info, but there are *lots* of individual descriptions (like yours) scattered throughout the archives. MIDI stands for "Musical Intstrument Digital Interface", a special network for connecting synthesizers, drum machines, and computers together. A MIDI "file" is the modern equivalent to the piano roll (the roll of paper punched with holes, put in a player-piano). If your computer has a sound card (Sound Blaster, etc.), a MIDI file can be played on its synthesizer chip. When you visit a website and hear music, your computer has downloaded a MIDI file. You can manually download MIDI files, as well, and click on them to call up your player. > I have lately heard talk on the digest of "Bass Player" (?) > > Can someone recommend a decent mag to read, and of course where > I can obtain said item ? Thats 2 original members down, 2 to go + Andy Sojka. WHooaaaaa. Also, I now have the name of the guy who designed the cover for 'Strategy'. I now have to get in touch with him and ask him to recreate it so we can all see what might have been. This is all cutting edge stuff dont you agree, I'm so excited. Anyway, Mark said he sent Eagle Rock records a tape of 25 (yes TWENTY FIVE) songs, including all the songs from his first album, which he says he did not scrap after all. He also said the LevelFest was a real 'Boost' and then he said something really weird, he said it was: MK: "Kismet! ( look it up ) With me at the head, and all the Fans behind , How can we fail ?" Also, Mark is kind of weird, he likes to talk in metaphors a lot and I'm not that clever and don't really understand what he's on about. Still, his opinion on rare tracks seems to concurr with Boons so that is good, although it doesn't help me track them down. Anyway, I'll have to be going. Yours..............................LOZ [Bravo, Loz, for setting up those interviews! Sounds like they should give you some great material for your much-anticipated Word Machine zine... just make sure you also get plenty of "human interest" stories from Mark, Andy, etc., and NOT just the exact geographic coordinates of those rare & mysterious missing tracks! -Eric =) ] ------------------------------ Subject: HOOKIN' UP WITH DA DIGEST CREW! From: "Anthony Richards" Date: Fri, 12 Jun 1998 16:49:56 -0400 Funky T here. How y'all doin? Had a chance to speak with Lolita and Winston via phone today. Can't wait to hook up with them. They both sound like real together people (but aren't all us Levelheads the same way?). Any other Levelheads in New York? E-mail me and let me know. I'd love to speak with you all at some point. And thanks to everyone else who have welcomed me into the digest (Carl, Don Z., etc). This is the great thing about the digest, and the Internet in general. It's definitely a great medium to meet people who share similar interests! I'd be interested in hearing from any of the Levelheads from all over the world, especially from Japan! I'm very much into japanese anime and tokusatsu (live action), and would love to hear from anyone who shares the same interests. I asked Lolita and Winston what would happen if you put Mark King, David Sancious (keyboards), and Dennis Chambers (drums) in the same room to jam? Any comments out there about such a dream session? If anyone out there wants to know more about the music of David Sancious and Dennis Chambers, let me know. I'm sure plenty of da posse on the digest could enlighten you. I remember reading once in an interview that Mark named Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, Jack Bruce, Alex Blake (ex Billy Cobham bassist) and Doug Rauch (ex Santana bassist) as some of his prime influences. If you listen to Mark's playing, you can definitely hear a little bit of all those players' styles mixed in with Mark's own signature voice! Anyone out there ever hear the story of how Mark came all the way from the UK to New York, and showed up at Lenny White's doorstep to crash? (Lenny White, for those of you out there who might not know, was a member of the ground breaking fusion band Return To Forever). I ran into Lenny at a party in New York some years ago, and when I asked him about it, he cheerfully recalled that incident. Do you think Mark would let me crash at his place if I showed up in the UK? Just a thought. Hope everyone has a great weekend. As always, keep it funky! Funky T P.S. Has anyone seen Sheila Escovedo (aka Sheila E) on Magic Johnson's new talk show? Apparently, she's the leader of his house band. She is without a doubt one of the most talented drummers/percussionists I've ever seen or heard! If you've never seen her work the drums, check her out!! ------------------------------ Subject: Why Are you Leaving lyrics From: angelina rogero Date: Fri, 12 Jun 1998 17:13:57 -0700 (PDT) Hi Christien and everyone, This is what I believe the correct lyrics are. They laid down some upbeat acid jazz grooves from bands like Brand New Heavies and Incognito. These grooves got the joint jumpin'. What really impressed me was an excellent vocal performance by our very own Lolita. She's entertaining up there on the stage and not afraid to project her soulful voice. Lolita, you could sing for my band anytime. If you're near Manhattan when they're playing, be sure to check them out. Afterwards, Winston and I heard a live cd by JTQ. More excellent grooves. I'd love to check out these guys live if they ever play again in the USA. Adam, do you know of anything like this? ciao for now, Greg ------------------------------ Subject: Ben Liebrand mix It's over From: Ronald Kuipers Date: Sat, 13 Jun 1998 03:17:38 -0400 Hi you all I have a desperate request. In addition of being a fan of level 42 I'm also a fan of Ben Liebrand. When I was searching trough the old digests. I came across the Ben Liebrand mix of It's over. Never heard it never I knew it excisted. Is there someone, I hope in holland, Who wants to share with me this funky experience. Being a fan of both I loved the hitcombination. Don't worry about tomorrow, just live forever now Ronald
