Does this mean if I download midi files that some wonderful levelhead has taken the time to figure out, I can listen to L42 on my computer? Sorry for this question if it is totally off base? Maybe I should head for the archives? Any Sugggestions? Maybe go back to typing school after looking at my typos? Secondly, about music clubs. I really had no idea how they worked. I was thinking of the exposure that L42 would get to more people. More people= more fans. It really would not be our decision to do a deal with the music club. That's L42 domain. We would be the stimulus to get the dialogue started. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find L42 anything in the USA? So please, no flames, Ok? I really just wanted more people to know how great L42 was and is. It amazes me that a band that disbanded in the late 80's continues to be timelss. I also find the membership stats fascinating, but when looking at % of members and their origin to look at the numbers ykou have to keep the total population of each country in mind too. So USA # might look big, but compare to total pop of England vs USa might be much smaller % wise. Whatever the numbers I think you are all a great group. LA Levelhead I guess I'm just frustrated because I tell people I like L42 and they look at me like I'm from Mars. ------------------------------ Subject: hello. eric. chi cha. In my (seemingly never ending) quest to become a bass player, I have taken lots of advice from different quarters and now my search turns to literature. Whilst in Norwich (England) last weekend I bought "Bassist" magazine. Not a bad read really. I have lately heard talk on the digest of "Bass Player" (?) Can someone recommend a decent mag to read, and of course where I can obtain said item ? (I suppose what I ought to be doing really is saving the pounds that I spend on reading material and put them towards buying a decent bass, but I'm only human after all !!!) Erm.....yep, that's about it.... -Tom ------------------------------ Subject: picky, I know! I am bestowed with a '.com' e-mail address but I am definitely not American, I just happen to work for (a mighty fine, no really) American organisation, in the UK. Anyway, I think it _is_ of interest that a) there are nearly 600 subscribers and b) the diversity of countries is so great. Some of you might remember me from the Levelfest when I met you in Joe Daflo's? (I was the girl with the photo album!) That was an amazing day! I am 24 and originally from Liverpool. I have liked the band since 1985 and have met the band several times. It was nice to meet you all at Joe Daflo's, namely: Winston, Kristin, Morgan, Glynn, Don and everbody else who's names I didn't manage to get. Hey Winston, I got the C.D this morning .... it's EXCELLENT! Thankyou very much. Also, does anybody have any of the photos of us all taken outside Joe's the day we all met - I would love a copy if we can arrange it? I hope to hear from some of you other level 42'ers out there. It's great to be on the Digest, thanks for the advice and the address guys! With A Little Love Jen xxx -- Jennie ------------------------------ Subject: CD5/CDV's ,stats and an idea! From: "Adam Hankinson" Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 13:41:20 +0100 Hello friends, Firstly, Hi to all the new subscribers.. >What exactly are CD5's and CD Video Singles? Are the only available/playable >in Europe? CD5's are Cd singles. Usually the same track listing as the 12" vinyl. CDV are CC Video. But You needed a CD video player to watch them. They usually have one video track and a few audio tracks (playable on normal CD players. Is there a way of watching the CD vids on a PC? I have several L42 CDV's and have never seen them! RE: Stats, I spoke to Eric about this while at the Forum in London (JTQ) as I was amazed of the lack of UK digesters. I still think that the internet is regarded as a "nerdy, geeky" anorak type thing here in the UK. And also it is only just becomeing regarded as a usefull tool in business. Also, Eric said that he considers any mail address with .com as a US company. Yet Bill Miller (hi Bill, how's the voice!!) and many other UK digesters use their companys email that is .com. How can we find out excactly where everyone is from? How about a list of members (with permission) with a few details, like areas, ages etc. (how about a birthday list) It would make small Levelfest's easy to organize!! and as I travell around Britain gigging I could possibly hook up with some other headz for a little drinkie =) I was down in Arborffield, Nr Reading last night (well tonight actually, but you won't see this till Friday!!) Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Meeting "THE KING" From: "Anthony Richards" Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 10:21:01 -0400 What's up y'all? "Funky T" here again. Let's all live for the groove til' the sun goes down (and back uo again)! During August of 1987, I got an opportunity to see Level 42 three times (twice in New York, and once in Connecticut). The first show was at a club on the eastern end of Long Island. While my friends and I were waiting to get into the club, Mark and the guys passed by. I managed to catch Mike Lindup, and say a brief hello, and told him how much I enjoyed the band's music. After a brief conversation, and "thanks for the support", he proceeded to head back to the club. An artist by the name of Jill Jones (anybody remember her?) was the opening act. She was pretty smooth, and pretty funky. She was supporting her album that was released on the Paisley Park label, so "you know who" had a lot to do with her musical direction. Anyway, the fellas took the stage, and as usual, were slammin! We were right in front of the stage, and you can imagine how awesome it was to see your musical heroes at such a close distance. To watch Mark King play live is an unforgettable experience! He should regularly be featured on the front covers of any publication that dares to call themselves a music or musicians' magazine (but y'all already know that)! We caught the band the very next night at The Ritz in NYC. We got there super early, so this time we got a chance to meet the band before the show AND backstage after the show. Boon, Mike, Annie, and Krys were all very gracious. Phil was very cool. And Mr. King's reputation as being a gentleman and all around nice guy was once again validated! It's always great to meet musicians who don't let "the business" inflate their egos, and don't diss their fans. It's also interesting to note that drummer Omar Hakim and bassist Carl James (who toured with Steve Winwood the year before when Level 42 opened for him at Madison Square Garden) had also come to the show, and were hanging out back stage. Of course the band was even hotter than the night before, and we were again lucky enough to be right at the front of the stage again. The last time we saw the band was in Connecticut at a club called Toad's Place. Once again, we got there super early (anybody notice a pattern here?), so we had a chance to meet the band again, and get a prime spot in front of the stage. I had my copy of the "Lessons In Love" 12" with me, and Mark personally autographed it for me, and with sincerity mentioned that he had remebered meeting me back stage at The Ritz concert with my friends. I got a chance to hang out during the soundcheck, and man, was that an experience I'll never forget! Mark, Mike, Boon, and Phil started jammin' on a serious groove, and then turned it up even more by rattling off (with ease I might add) fast tempo unison lines that were very reminiscent of bands like Return To Forever and Weather Report (I only wish I ha d my walkman with me to tape it)! Even though Mark was ill with a sore throat that evening, he still sounded great, and the band sounded awesome (as usual). Was anyone else out there at any of these these shows? I would love to hear your recollections of these performances (and I'm sure everyone else in the digest would too). Until next time, keep it funky y'all! Funky T P.S. to "Lolitaj": Although I absolutely love the Brother Sister album by The Brand New Heavies, I think I have to agree with you that the first one was definitely hotter! Did you know that the UK and US versions of the first album are totally different? The UK version (released on the Acid Jazz label) has Ella Jay Ruth doing all the vocal tracks! If memory serves correctly, she's the sister of jazz saxophonist Steve Williamson (who has been credited as being one of the pioneers of the UK "Acid Jazz" scene). Also, at the time of the UK release, the band included core members Jan Kincaid, Andrew Levy, Simon Bartholomew, and Jim Wellman(?) on sax, and Gordon Lassalles(?) on percussion. Soon after, N'Dea joined the band, and re-did the vocal cuts. By the time the first album (with N'Dea's v ocal tracks) was released in the US (on the Delicious Vinyl label), only N'Dea, Andrew, Jan and Simon remained as the core members of the group. I had several opportunities to meet them, and saw them live several times. They are slammin' live, and their musicianship as a band is severly underrated! The band definitely needs more support from their current label. Has anyone out there heard their latest release? I'd be interested in hearing how good it is. Hope the info was helpful. ------------------------------ Subject: n'dea From: "Steve Allert" Organization: MCI Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 10:19:28 -0500 Lolita(and others), Per ur Q; You can now listen to and buy N'deas new album (self titled)at: http://www.broadcast.com/jukebox/albums/n/ndeadavenport_v2adv270172.stm OoS,OoM StA ------------------------------ Subject: CD formats From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 12:33:45 EDT > What exactly are CD5's and CD Video Singles? From: Steven_Libenson @ monitor.com Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 18:09:32 -0400 The postings about the number of subscribers in the US and UK, as well as Lolita's posting about how her friends think of Level 42 as "her group" got me thinking. As a fan in the US, I almost always get a "Who are they?" when I mention their name. Once in a rare while, someone will say something like, "They did that song with the clown in the video, right?" And even more rarely, I'll bump into a fan who can actually name a few albums. And I never would have believed that people like Winston and Lolita even exist until I got on this digest. On the other hand, I assume that just about everyone in the UK has heard of them. Is this true? I am curious to learn how fans and non-fans in the UK react to the group. What is the band's "reputation?" Do people connect them with 80's pop at it's best (Tears for Fears) at it's worst (you fill in the blank), with "musicians' bands," with jazz-funk bands of the 70's or with something else? ------------------------------ Subject: PolyGram Drops the Ball From: Dave Mock Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 17:25:47 -0700 (PDT) Hey, Micro-Kids: Just saw Funky T's message -- and am even madder than before that Level 42 was practically left hanging during the post-'RITF' era. I understand that a record company cannot give maximum thrust to every single band (that's exactly what Sony argued in the George Michael case), but for them to do virtually NOTHING with an act that still had potential on at least three different charts is a marketing crime. Did they expect Mark, Mike et al to go to every TV and radio station personally? Unbelievable. TCOY, The Duke ------------------------------ Subject: Bootlegs available in the U.S.??? From: NECADon @ aol.com Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 21:09:45 EDT Hi there. After not reading the posts here for about 6 months, I'm finally back on track. I went searching the internet for someone in the US who might be swapping/selling/offering any Level 42 bootlegs. The only sources I found were the two European sources. Before pursuing that route, I'd thought I'd see if anyone in the States might be willing to sell/swap any live bootlegs. In return, I've got all albums, tapes, most US singles, and quite a few posters (all used after hanging on my dorm walls for ahwile.) that someone might be interested in seeing.....and of course, cash........BTW, I'm in Omaha, NE, anyone else from this neck of the woods. Also, I found a picture Level42 maxisingle of Take A Look...a picture disc with some very nice art on one side. How many of these were produced? Thanks in advance.
