I was at a bar in NY that is owned by a Brit called NW3, and the DJ played Love Games. I began going berserk - I had never heard Love Games in a bar or club. My friend said, 'this is by your group, Level 42, right?' I asked how he remembered that I like them, and he said 'you have been such a big fan for 10 years, how can I ever forget? Every time I hear one of their songs, I think of you.' * As far as the Brand New Heavies is concerned, Brother Sister is great, but the first one is the best. The band was still raw, and had that hungry sound. I also like the fact that there are many more instrumentals - I think the song BNH is their best instrumental overall. The horn arrangement is killer, and the band is really tight. N'Dea kills Dream Come True, as well as all the other vocal tracks (Ride in the Sky is my favorite). Check out her vocals on Guru's first Jazzmatazz CD - she sings a song on there called When You're Near that has smooth, funky vocals and she overdubs herself. BTW, whatever happened to the fourth guy in the group? On the first US CD there is a picture of him prominently in the front, and on the next CD he was gone. What did he play, why did he leave, and where did he go? * Maysa is coming back to NY on July 16th (S.O.B.s again). I will be on vacation again, so I am very upset to miss it, but I thought I would pass it along to anyone who is in the area and wants to go. * There are 400 US subscribers to the digest??!! Wow! That is very cool. That lets me know that there would truly be an audience for a Mark mini-tour should he be able to do it. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: wally, wally & more wally From: TSNPUB @ aol.com Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 09:15:50 EDT Hey gang! Been a while since I put in my two bits. First, glad to hear that the ILF was such a great success. Congrats to Lolita et al. who helped pull it off! Sounds like you all had a blast. Well, here's couple of things that have been bothering me. These questions may be reserved for the real die-hards out there. 1. Was there ever a Level 42 show that Wally Badarou sat in on? 2. On Wally's "Words of a Mountain" CD, the liner notes say something about him producing a Herbie Hancock CD in the near future. What ever happened about that? 3. Does anyone know if Wally produced or made any contributions to Mark King's new solo CD? Okay, I feel a lot better now. From: Rob Kadel Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 12:36:41 -0400 Hi, all- With special thanks to Winston, Carl, and Morgan for allowing me to use images from their L42 web pages, I've created a collage of great L42 pics. I did this mostly because I know how difficult it is to find posters of the band these days; but I wanted to have something I could hang on my wall. Anyway, it's available freely, so just point your browser to http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~rkadel/level42.html and check it out. If you'd like to print it for yourself, the web page above tells you how to do this. Also, I've provided a couple of tips for printing it with the highest quality. Hope everybody enjoys it! -Rob ------------------------------ Subject: list of members From: "Edward Nowak" Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 20:14:10 +0200 Hi Levelfans !!! Got this message back from Lori, one of the honchos at Rock and Soul International -- the duo's official fan club: 'I LOVE LEVEL 42! LONG LIVE MARK KING!' Maybe I can have her tell Daryl and John to cut a cover of "Running In the Family" and make it sound like "Private Eyes." Or start a debate on their website saying that the Kinger blows away T-Bone and Boon scorches G.E.! ;) "Woman to woman and m-m-man to man, Heart to heart and hand to hand, Set an example for little boys and girls For the hand that rocks the cradle can rule the world." Bonneville Mark Toronto ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 10:19:13 -0400 From: "Anthony Richards" Subject: GREETINGS TO MY FELLOW FUNKATEERS!!! What's up y'all? Anthony Richards here (aka "Funky T"). Just joined the digest, and wanted to say that it's great to be in the company of people who are dedicated to keeping the Level 42 groove going! Being a musician myself (guitar, percussion, some bass and keyboards), how can you not, from a musician's standpoint, realize how INCREDIBLY TALENTED Level 42 was (is), especially MR. MARK KING?!! And if you're a music lover in general, how could you not appreciate the sheer musicality and lyrics of Level 42's music? I have to agree with "Tracy, Jay" re: Mark's (and the band's) careers being f----d over by Polydor/PolyGram and RCA/BMG! I worked for PolyGram from 1988-1992, and I remember when "Staring At The Sun" and "Level Best" came out, the label did NEXT TO NOTHING to promote the record at radio stations or video music channels (of course, I did my part by supplying all my retail accounts with promo copies of both releases to promote at the store level. There wasn't anyone I dealt with who didn't know what a HUGE Level 42 fan I was)! Anyway, as I'm sure you know, no radio or video airplay means no exposure, no record sales, no nothing! And that is a CRIME for such a band of extremely talented individuals! Anyway, glad to "meet" everyone! I'll be back with more real life experiences involving the band, which included meeting them during the summer of 1987, bumping into Phil Gould at Tower Records NYC, becoming aquainted with Phillippa Watson, and more (that is, if y'all are interested in hearing them)! Until then, keep it funky! "Funky T" P.S. Glad to see that everyone has a great variety of musical tastes out there! Some of my other musical loves include Santana, George Duke, The Brand New Heavies, John McLaughlin, Parliament/Funkadelic, Marcus Miller (of course), and many other bands to be named later. By the way, anyone out there ever hear of a funk band from Dayton, Ohio by the name of Slave? Truly a funky band! ------------------------------ From: "Phil Murray" Subject: New Aust. Subscriber Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 10:40:41 +1000 Hello all fellow Levelheads. Just taking this opportunity to intro myself as a new member to the digest. My name is Phil, and I'm from Sydney, Australia. Level 42 has been my BIGGEST musical taste for many years, and it's great to know that there are still so many die hard fans. Are there any others like me in Sydney I wonder? Anyway it's great to be on board and I can't wait for the re-issues and MK's new solo. Ok, time to get out of sight and out of mind.
