Let's hope things will settle down a bit now. I know almost everyone on this digest has said something about it, but MAN! Do I wish I could have gone to that ILF!! Not only would it have been very QL indeedee to meet da man himself :) but also to meet some people on this digest irl. Oh well, maybe next year... :/ A few days ago (I think) someone asked about Alphaville. Forever Young is a great album, and I would certainly recommend it. The Singles Collection is more for collectors (hence probably the title ;) ), it contains a few remixes and... well, it's allright. But they have released far more, and an Alphaville Anthology is scheduled for release september this year!! :) But as this is a Level 42 Digest, I won't go into all that in detail. Andre, my man, have fun in the States. By the way, we now have the very first official dutch female Level 42 Digest member! :) (Maaike, welkom bij deze.) It's taken about 5 years... I went to see Roger Hodgson (ex Supertramp) in Tivoli (Utrecht, Netherlands) last Friday. Although he hasn't performed live for more than 15 years, he still gives me the shivers. He played for more than two hours solo, thus him alone, using a keyboard, 12-string guitar or an old little church organ. Golden hits like Dreamer, Give a little bit, Fools Overture and School were played, as well as some of his own songs. The nice thing was that there were only 200-300 people in the place, so it was easy for Roger to talk between the songs about his life and dreams, and even ask for requests, which he willingly played. I saw the 'other' Supertramp live last year, but I must conclude that Roger is still the real Supertramp for me, and that Rick Davies' re-incarnation is not worth to be called Supertramp. If you have the chance to see Roger live, do so, it's worth the time! I'm jealous. Mark King, 777... Ah, I felt quite privileged to ride the 777 as well (and meeting Mark was okay too). Unfortunately, that's the only shot that I got. I did take one out the window (while we were still parked at Heathrow) of a Virgin 747, and while we were taxiing I caught a shot of a British 747 flaring out (but it's a pretty distant shot). Keep in mind that in order to fly on the 777, I had to fly United Airlines which does not fly direct from Seattle. Seattle -> Denver -> Washington Dulles -> Heathrow = 16 hours. British Airways 747 Seattle -> Heathrow in nine hours (but I've got 50,000 miles on United and counting). >> [Sojka] is quite adamant that the name Level 42 was HIS idea solely, > I really wish I had thought to ask Mark about this when I had the > chance! Groetjes, Andre ------------------------------ Subject: Andy Sojka Interview From: "LOZ Green" Date: Mon, 8 Jun 1998 19:52:33 +0100 AHHH hAAA hAHAAH A, Hello, I interviewed Andy Sojka today and BOY OOOOH, did he have some juicy information for us all. AHHHH, HHHHAAAA now Im torn between my two responsibilities to 1) Tell the members of the digest evrything I know and 2)write a fanzine. Anway, the full interview in all its glory will be in the fanzine but basicallly: He told me all about Powerline and where they came from and that the song they did on Dazz 4 is called simply 'Journy To' which is pronounced Journey 2, its a play on words you see, because Powerline did an original track called Journey (And eventually another track called double Journey). He said the song is far more legendary that Sandstorm, a song which he himself named. He is selling the rights to Powerline as someone has made him an offer he can't refuse, he thinks it could be really big (best get your copy of Dazz 4 insured!!!!!) Also, Powerline was going to be an early named for Level 42. NOW THEN, the big news, phwwwew. Some of you may remember I spoke a good few months ago about a tape I called 'Tape 2' a second Early Tapes tape. Well, I was wrong, it should have been called tape -1 really. When Andy First met the boys he took a hand held tape and recorded the tracks they did, ie all of the Early Tapes in a very raw form AND ANOTHER TRACK, THE INFAMOUS 'NIGHT TRAIN' that I have babbled on about for the last 4 years. The whereabouts of this tape ARE known, whoooof, but wait till you hear the circumstances of how it came to where it is now. Basically, Andy went to see the management, under guidance from the then fan club newsletter with a view to putting out a limited ed. fan club cassette. That is, until our friend Mr. King found out! Ugggh, he didnt like the Early Material and took an instant dislike to the idea of anyone every hearing this and then the fun begins.... As for strategy, sorry, no extra tracks, when it came to the actual recording, the band knew those 8 tracks inside out and thats all they did. Also, for fans of the SAX on love meeting love, get this, the SAX was done by Dave Chambers AND Boon. Although neither of them probably know it!!! What did Andy Sojka send Polydor along with the Strategy master tapes? You've guessed it, the fully completed cover artwork for 'Strategy' which was subsequently destroyed by Polydor. Plus new on the Dazz 5 7", Dazz 5 cear vinyl, what the boys were like in those early days and Andy general thoughts on the group. I must say, I had been told he was quite irrascepal (Is that a word?) (I know it will be spelt wrong) but actually he was marvelous, we spoke for nearly 1 HOUR. Anyway, I have comprimised, I've told you basically the backbone of what new info I found, but see the fanzine for full details. Its coming soon, like a thief in the night, it wil steel your duvet, and leave you uncomfortably cold. Yours.................LOZ PS anyone who wants to swap Forever Now UK CD for Physical Prescence UK CD mail me, I have the latter, I want the former. ------------------------------ Subject: N'Dea Davenport From: "Carla Mozee" Organization: USC Radio Date: Mon, 8 Jun 1998 14:19:42 PDT Hi all, I've read a couple of posts about the Brand New Heavies. If they're any So. California fans of the original BNH singer, N'Dea Davenport, she will be performing at the El Rey Theatre on June 11th. Doors open at 8pm, but you need to buy tickets from Ticketmaster. N'Dea has a new, solo album. Also, someone mentioned picking up BNH's Brother/Sister. That album is okay..but I think their first, self-titled album is even better. Cheers, Carla ------------------------------ Subject: Re: music clubs From: Lazlo Nibble Date: Mon, 8 Jun 1998 15:43:21 -0600 > In the USA there are music clubs one can belong to; however, alas no L42 > selections are available. WE can change that!! Erm, let's not. Among other things, music clubs pay reduced or no royalties to the artists. I don't see why we should *encourage* anyone to screw a band we like out of getting paid for their music. -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo @ swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ::: Internet Music Wantlists: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo/Wantlists ------------------------------ Subject: Odds n' Sodds From: "Tracy, Jay" Date: Mon, 8 Jun 1998 21:30:07 -0400 (EDT) Few things: Morgan, as always thanks for the news updates. Don thanks for the pins. As for this paying for Mark to come Stateside, I, as Eric and a few others have mentioned, feel a bit odd about funding a millionaire to come perform for his fans. But, Mark is the only person I would do this for, probably for the sole reason that I believe his career was truly fucked over by Polydor/gram. They never gave Level 42 a fair (or reasonable) shake. RCA and BMG followed suit. Therefore King (and 42s) music and careers were and have been stiffled. Sooooo, if someone is actually tabulating votes, I too will shell out $100 to the cause. The other night I was @ Berklee (semi-famous music college here in the town of boston) to catch Marcus Miller. Looking around the hall (I couldn't tell the capacity, I was in the second row (am I gloating!?)), I saw what seemed to be a sold-out show of fans of, more than likely, kick ass bass playing. I find it odd that a good deal of this crowd would not support a player such as MK. Although I really doubt, even if MK did do a small US tour that boston would be included (for more than a few reasons, one being that boston is lame), but if it were (ha!), we could do publicity, I know Eric and a few other folks are around these parts, we could post fliers, try to spark some interest and jog some meories...I know a couple of writers for a paper (the boston Phoenix, kind of a sad version of the Village Voice (NY)) and I could probably manage to get an article written...with a little violence we could get some airplay, maybe.... It could be done... Anyway, Marcus was a joy to watch, a fantastic player and a great band leader (he _did_ learn from one of the best). Hiram was good and fun as always, he's also getting really fat (!). Lolita mentioned Jungle Funk, Doug Wimbish, a pretyy good bass player was playing more in the mode of "lead bass" (as in 90s Miles band with Foley (now w/ Arrested Devolpment) in that spot) not too impressibly. Will Calhoun is a monster behind the kit and it would be nice if he hooked up with a better band. Vinx made me wish I were drinking cyanide instead of tea... Jezzuz, this is far too long... Loz, good luck w/ your magazine. . . . j a y jtracy @ bics.bwh.harvard.edu [yeah, I agree. Boston is a big music-ego place, with Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory and the Longy School. I, too, have seen some sold out shows of otherwise esoteric musicians, and I think that MK would do well here... being that MK is (at least) notable as a "musician's musician" and all. And yes, Jay, Bruce and I will plaster the city with King propaganda. -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Chicken feed! Lee'Ann Ahhh, yes, the 3 indispensable tools of my trade: my slicky surfboard, my beloved bass, and my lively Level 42 CD collection. Thou shall be Protected with my Life. Someone asked about a program/product which can extract the individual instrument tracks from a song. Very hard, even if there were programs that could do this, they would not deliver 100% accurate results. I think it would have to take a nifty sound engineer to edit and "clean" the tracks to deliver 100% pure bass tracks, guitar tracks, drum tracks... It *would* be very great, yes, I could use that to write my MIDI files... but then what's the point... the challenge of imitation is one of the main driving forces of writing MIDI files. Thanks to all that replied and commented on my MIDI files, I appreciate the input.
