Nobody's saying they're great artists. Nobody's saying they're great songwriters. Nobody (least of all they) is denying they were manufactured. Point is, all they're supposed to be is an old-fashioned teen appeal pop band, and they're being that to devastating effect. The basic concept (an all girl band with glamour AND attitude, when all previous all girl bands had one or the other) was clever, the execution (a tailor made Spice Girl for every taste) was inspired. They were supposed not to be able to perform live, and although they're hardly perfect they are better than the overrated plagiarists All Saints (as anyone who's heard their woeful live renditions on TOTP or TFI Friday can testify). Now that the driftwood has been ditched, I won't be surprised if the Spice Girls go from strength to strength. So mock if you must, but I feel your bile would be better directed at bands who fail to deliver what they set out to. Soul bands who are devoid of soul, for example. Mentioning no lighthouses. Insert spurious link to Level 42 here, if you really need to. AG ------------------------------ Subject: Multi Track Disc Recording Software... From: "Sean D. There are programs that would in essence allow you to record a song from CD, even record different tracks onto your hard drive, but not one that would break apart each track. Sorry, but if that were possible I think the industry would really freak out. There have been some actual hardware devices that would supposedly "take the vocal tracks out of your favorite songs..." but I have only heard few demonstrations of them. If you decide, or someone else does, to write software that would do that I would love a copy too. In the meantime, however, we'll just have to deal with our fantasies. That would be pretty cool though!!! ~Sean -- *********** "The MIDI Extreme" *********** * http://www.flash.net/~questps/midi.htm * *** For the best MIDI files on the net!*** ****************************************** ------------------------------ Subject: Head Full Of Shadows From: Pat Flanagan Date: Fri, 05 Jun 1998 10:32:13 -0500 >PAT Flanagan (spelling apologies) Do you have a copy of that CD with >Head Full of Shadows on it? I may not know what I'm talking about, but is this even possible? I didn't think that once a song was mixed down to a 2-track that it could be separated back out into individual tracks. Supercool if it could be done, that would be a remixer's heaven, but I would think that if it were possible it would be more well known. I know there are plenty of multi-track packages that will let you record NEW individual tracks to your hard drive and digitally mix them, but haven't heard of anything like the above. But hey, if it's out there, I want it, too! :D ____________________ PFPD -- newmedia marketing consulting a limited liability company PO Box 281, Granger, IN 46530-0281 v:616.663.2250 -- competitive business advantages through creative technology ------------------------------ Subject: MORE NEWS From: Morgan42 Date: Fri, 05 Jun 1998 17:39:23 +0200 Yes it's true - the Polygram group, including Polydor, has been taking over by Universal. But the good news is that the remastered Polydor c.d.'s are still on track for release sometime this year. There is doubt, however, whether or not the Greatest Hits package will now include the later RCA tracks as originally planned, but the 1998-remix of The Sun Goes Down is now ready for single release in the U.K. - this will be announced as soon as it is confirmed. So there is no need to worry, there reissues are still happenning (Ian Buck confirmed this today - June 4th - with the chap doing the remastering).! Mark's album - despite the original record company "definite" for June release, is now planned for "definite" release in September. The track listing is:- Bitter Moon Swimming with Sky One Man Half Written Songs Pamela Take My Hand Love Wars Resupply If I Had Something Changing of the Guard An edit of the track Bitter Moon will form a single release in the U.K. --Morgan http://www.level42.com ------------------------------ Subject: US concert tour From: L42UPSGUY @ aol.com Date: Fri, 5 Jun 1998 12:30:49 EDT ---In regards to Mark Touring the US with or without Level 42. For us "the fans" to fund the concert to tour is IDIOTIC! We've done our part to support all the members in the band for years. I would highly recommend that Mark's record company set 3 - 10 tour dates in America and go from there. *I'm sure everyone will bitch and moan bout my opinion but we've already spent our money wisely. It's not time to throw it away. Can we try to get Robin Scott to tour next? Note: Swing out sister did the above trick...and it works. -Unrelated: Is anyone going to see Michael Franks on his tour? The Prosoniq PANDORA product appears to do some of what you want, at least for attenuation of vocals. Also check out the details on the PANDORA "Forensic" product (which currently has no release date) - this claims to be able to separate components of a song into separate files. http://www.prosoniq.com/pandora.html Maybe not exactly the answer, but an interesting product nonetheless. -Eric -- Eric J. Now a lot of us campers recall all the brouhaha on this digest when the Spicers were just becoming known in North America. At that time I had never heard any of their songs and dismissed them as yet another pre-packaged plastic product. Recently, however, I saw their live show video (the one from Turkey or wherever it was), and I am almost ashamed to admit that it was a great show. Every single tune had a fantastic groove to it! The band was killer! There was, I believe, just a four piece band, and they were playing with tape of a horn section and background vocals. The girls? In my enlightened state I now think that they are yet another pre-packaged plastic product. I don't consider myself a 'PC' girl or anything, and can smoke cigars and talk football with the best of them, but all this tits talk really isn't necessary. Let's be slightly more cognizant of what we're saying. I suppose its par for the course considering the ratio of men to women on this digest is about 8 to 1 (the Levelfest only had five female participants who weren't people's wives or girlfriends!). About the shirts... 1) Joseph Smith, Doug White, Germano Filho, Laurel Anderson/Carl Mueller, Bill Wilson and Paul Hammond have not paid yet and have received shirts. I know some folks checks are in the mail, but if yours isn't, please send it to: Lolita Jackson, 225 E. 95th St., Apt. 2J, NY, NY 10128 2) Michael Byrd, Maurice Shannon, Chris Safsten and Chuck Roehm all have been sent this afternoon. All of you except Chris need to send me your checks as well. 3) Christien DeRoo, Tim Norton, Ian Condron and John Marrero need to send Winston (winman @ aol.com) their addresses and daytime telephone numbers via e- mail. Once that is done the shirts will be sent to you on Monday. Please forward a check for $15 to my address (see #1). All the shirts are now spoken for and taken. I'm sorry if anyone was left out - hopefully whatever shirts are designed for next year will be just as good, and maybe we'll be able to do a larger run. BTW, Winston, Greg and I went to see Marcus Miller last night. The show was awesome! He did superlong versions of Tutu and Panther, and even teased us with a little slapping of Teen Town. This guy is unbelievable on bass, and its a joy to watch him play. He also played bass clarinet (yea!) as well as soprano sax, which surprised me. I didn't know he added soprano sax to his show; I learned to play tenor sax after I learned bass clarinet, so it is fairly common to do so, but I didn't realize he did it during shows. A factoid about this - clarinet players tend to morph over to tenor sax or soprano sax, but hardly ever alto or baritone. The reason: tenor and soprano saxes are B flat, like the regular and bass clarinet, and the fingerings in the upper register of the clarinets are exactly the same as the upper _and_ lower ones for those saxes. You don't have to relearn anything but the proper amount of tension in your lips on the reed. The alto sax is an E flat instrument, so the fingerings are different and it would be more difficult to learn. It seems as though most alto players tend to play flute instead of clarinet. A group called Jungle Funk opened for him, and that group is comprised of Doug Winbush on bass (he played it like a guitar - it was cool!), Will Calhoun (?) and Vinx on percussion. Vinx has an amazing voice, so it was a pleasant surprise to me that he is in this group. They were good as well. If you live in a city where his tour is coming, definitely go see it. My favorite performances, by instrument --------------------------------------- bass: My Hero guitar: 88 (phys. pres.) keys: Kansas City Milkman drums: Floating Life vocals: To Be With You Again horns: Forever Now honorable mention -------------------- bass: Seven Years guitar: Love Games keys: It's Over drums: Over There vocals: Freedom Someday If you had to define a single moment (perhaps 5-10 seconds) as Level 42's best, what would it be? For me it's easy. Without a doubt, my choice is the absolutely phenomenal drum fill at 1:09 in "A Floating Life". The build up to the end of the tune from 1:09 is truly one of Level 42's greatest musical moments. ______________________________________________________________ | Matthew T. Is there anyone who can tell me how to get my hands on 2 CD singles from the RCA era. I'm looking for the Live single of "Overtime" and the single "My fathers shoes" wich contains the track "As years go by" I already have "The interview edition". As I understand those CD singles only were for sale in the U.K. but I need them 'cause I'm hooked to the groove. It includes 2 versions of "Billy's gone" and all the bonus tracks from the singles including the remix of "Love in a peacefull world". So if you want a copy just drop me a mail. If anyone has any question I should ask him them it will be best to mail me personally unless you can make Sundays disgest which I doubt! I wont spoil the interview beforehand, but basically he says it has been wise of me to go back to the beginning, as there are still things that people dont know? He said the picture of the band in the biography, with 'Leroy Williams' is actually a picture with Wally Badarou. I'm not sure I can agree with him 100% but I guess he would know. Also, he is quite adamant that the name Level 42 was HIS idea solely, totally and uniquivacoly(almost definitly spelt incorrectly). I did come from 'Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy' but he thought it up, it was his idea and he gave the band no choice but to accept the name and get on with making music. He was very enthusiastic about telling his side of the story and I cant wait till monday, who knows what I could discover? Anyway, I am going to advertise my book now. I have spare copies of 'LEVEL 42 - THE DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY' by Michael Cowton. They cost 10 pounds each, 2.50 pounds UK postage, 3.50 European and 5 pounds US, elsewhere just send a sensible amount. There is a cost of 4 pounds for me to accept personal cheques. Add up your total and muliply it by a snesible amount for currency conversion. So for a US cheque it would be 10 + 5 + 4 = 19 pounds. The multiply it by, say 1.6 (I think that is the current rate as the pound is very strong apparently, a fact to which I can attest because I tried to bite a pound coin last week with disastrous orthodentic repercussions) So there you are, I will even throw in a free copy of Strategy with every order (although I must state quite clearly that that last offer is not nearly true, and is basically a blatant attemtp to coerse you into buying a copy of one of my books). Still, the book is very rare, and if I didnt have copies, I dont know how you would go about getting one. Even I had to consult myself when I decided I wanted a copy!
