More info on those wonderful Level 42 hats that i 'tried' to get made. (notice i said tried?) Well, I have spoke to my friends at the Hat manufacturer in Maryland and they promised to send back my depost money. When it arrives, i will be returning the money to everyone who paid me. Of course i still didn't get money from everyone who ordered a hat, so please e-mail me if you in fact send me payment. (I do have a list, but i don't wanna leave anyone out by mistake) perhaps I'll find another place to make hats, but this time I'll front the moolah. It's probably for the best because as Jerry Rehn can tell you, his ORIGINAL design for the hat was awesome, but we really had to change the design for this company to produce the hat. Next time we may find a company that we wont have to compromise so much of our design for. Sorry for the wait of almost a year, but the company sucks, and I didn't exactly stay on their ass about it anyway. I promise to make it up to everyone who payed, in one way of the other. Hopefully most of us will meet at the Int'l levelfest, and I've been known to bring some nice surprises with me. Speaking of which, how is that chair holding up Brad? Or should I say Carl? (ha,ha,ha) Hey Will, I can't agree with you more about Shawn Colvin. I recently picked up that album, and it's been in my player for the last 3 weeks. Non-Stop! I will also pick up some more of her stuff. Check out her website at: http://www.shawncolvin.com/ Bruce, I'll be sending you the tape this week. I seem to have misplaced my DAT tape with all my originals on it, so I'll have to make you a cassette dub. Sorry for the delay. :-( Dawayne, what say we hire a detective to track down this Paul Davies? My DAT deck would love to play some of those Level 42 board tapes. Drop me a line, as I may have some shows you don't have. Juanjo, the video for Love In A Peaceful World is one of my faves by the boys. It's very simple, but the effects are awesome. I guess it lends itself to the simplicity of the tune. I sure wish someone could identify the drummer in the video for me. I've been trying to find out who he is, but nobody knows. It's a black guy, so don't say Gavin Harrison :-) Tcoy, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: ? Simple. The mix. Sounds like Mark's singing through a lead pipe with a mouthful of wax paper. Boring song, anyway.) Level 42 - Almost There (but not quite) Pursuit of Accidents - THE CHINESE WAY (I'm with you on that one, Lolita) Standing in the Light - A Pharoah's Nightmare True Colors - Kouyate (Touch choice, I love the entire album, but I guess my aversion to songs with spoken word sections applies here) World Machine - Dream Crazy (again, a tough choice, but I think this is the weakest song on the album) Running in the Family - It's Over (Good song, just too long and depressing) Staring at the Sun - Gresham Blues (weak weak weak) Guaranteed - Set Me Up (No question about it, SIMPY lyrics) Forever Now (BMG) - One In A Million (Mike, don't sing that high, PLEASE) Forever Now (Resurgence) - Heart On The Line Connoisseur Collection - The Chinese Way (extended remix from hell) Turn It On - The Chinese Way As Years Go By - Beezer One (I play the scat intro for a laugh, then skip) Live At Wembley - The Chinese Way Past & Presence - Play 'em all, thank GOD no Chinese Way!!! I guess you can infer then, that I think The Chinese Way is their WORST song ever. I think Satan plays that song endlessly over the soundsystem in Hell (preceeded each time by one of Mark's "Chinese Take-Away" jokes). ____________________ PFPD -- newmedia marketing consulting a limited liability company PO Box 281, Granger, IN 46530-0281 v:616.663.2250 -- competitive business advantages through creative technology ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V98 #14 From: ReeseTee1 Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Date: Wed, 21 Jan 1998 11:05:21 EST Brad, being a Midi musician, there are a few ways they might have sent the click track to him. One-from the keyboard (sequences) setup. Two- they have a system that hooks up to your bass drum and snare. It calibrates the time between the two and sends a metronome to the drummer (and it can in sync with the sequencer). Also they could have sent a outright click track (highly unlikely). The way I see it is that they send to a midi unit (drum machine) and he listens and plays to the beat and tempo of the machine. It's beat playing to a click, click, click, click. Oh, you mean a FOUR-TRACK mini-disc machine. Actually, the TASCAM has the most features, but be aware that an 8-track version of the mini-disc is rumored to be on the way this year. And there are other formats deserving consideration, such as the new Akai DPS-12. > In addition, i have a balanced DI input on the back of my trace elliot > head. Can i plug that into the mini disk with out problems?? Probably, but be aware that some Trace Elliot DI's sound better than others. I once had a guy in my studio who didn't want to record with the DI from his AH350-SMX head, because he said it didn't sound good. This surprised me, as the DI on my older AH300 sounds great. We compared them, and sure enough, the newer one didn't sound as good. Unfortunately, Trace products began showing a lot of quality control problems when they became popular worldwide - about the time the SMX line debuted. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------ > Hey, I'd like to hear more about what led to the departure of the Goulds > from the band in '87. People have alluded to friction > between Mark and Phil--I even remember someone saying that "Don't Bother > Me" is directed at Mark. Is this all true? If so, why? As I recall from the biography, Boon's heavy drinking and deep inferiority complex caused him to leave, while Phil was objecting to the new "pop" direction of the band. After the tracking of the WM album, when it came time to mix, Mark asked the other members to stay away from the studio and allow him to mix with Julian and Wally without all the bickering. Polydor had made it clear that if they didn't produce a megahit this time, their record deal would be over, and Mark felt that his sensibilities were more attuned to what they wanted. Of course, he was correct, and this course of action allowed the band to continue, even though it would be sans les Goulds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------- > i have'nt seen much about the pins lately. is this still an ongoing idea. This CD has been around > a while so many of you may have heard it already. Shawn has a great > voice. She sounds especally good on the third track, with Lyle Lovett > on harmonies. Really, really cool. Could anybody tell me what other > Shawn Colvin recordings are good? Winston and I were chatting about Shawn a few weeks (months?) ago, too. Here's my take on her other offerings: 1) "Fat City" - this album doesn't have quite the cohesiveness that "Small Repairs" demonstrates. Those that aren't into her genre (what would we call that, anyway) might have some problems making it to the end of the album. While the songwriting (and playing) at the begining of the album are fabulous, parts of the second half of the album sounds like it may have been culled from (slightly) lesser efforts. 2) "Cover Girl" - this album offers Shawn covering several artists (notably Gordon Sumner- did I spell this correctly?). I've only heard this album a couple times, but I can't remember anything striking me as having been bad. . . 3) "Steady On" - this album I haven't heard at all! (Actually, I didn't know it existed until I checked her website {address at bottom of message}.) Furthermore, she's appeared on _many_ compliations. My favorite of her's appears on the "Incredibly Live: The 1992 Telluride Bluegrass Festival", "Shotgun Down the Avalanche" with Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Allison Kraus, and Béla Fleck. WOW! I saw her in '94 (Telluride), and again in '95 (Palo Soleri, Santa Fe, w/ Lyle Lovett) and can attest that she's a knockout in person. If you're interested in hearing the track from the Telluride disc, I'll put a sample from it on my website . Please note that you'll need an MP3 player to handle this file. For more info on Shawn, try the Sony/Columbia website . Not only is the site very informative, but it's also very well put together! M ------------------------------ Subject: Shawn, con't. . . Having just viewed Live at Wembley, I was amazed by Phil's drumming style. Being a drummer myself, I found it very interesting to watch PG hit the hi-hat with his left hand and the snare with his right. And then he would cross over on other tunes! I'll tell you what, I have never seen anybody drum that way! I would have the greatest difficulty imitating Phil on that technique. However, it does work great for him, and yes I do think that he is an excellent drummer. I ordered the Level Best video last week and hope to receive it this week.
