Carl Mueller Paul Hammond ------------------------------ Subject: ILFesters From: Benjamin Temko Date: Mon, 1 Jun 1998 10:01:40 -0500 (EST) Hello, funkateers, A big *thanks* to all of you who have posted your pics of the ILF - what fun it is to see all of you schmoozing with da man (and with eachother, even more fun!). Any word on the videos? Also, I have been receiving suggestions on a starter bass (and yes, after I posted the message it occurred to me to check the archive - the best ideas are the ones we get after it's too late, most times), and thanks to all of you who have responded - I'll be making a decision soon and I'll let everyone know (I know you can't wait to hear - oh god, *another* bass player wanna be - very bad, very bad...) what I wind up with. As to the Mark King tour in the US, hell yes I'd put up $100, if I thought I could get a ticket out of it (even a backstage pass, as someone else mentioned, would be smashing), maybe even if I didn't get a ticket out of it. RE : Guaranteed - I have to agree that this album gets much maligning unjustly. It's very rock oriented (on the other hand, there's The Ape, about as cool of a bass riff as you'll hear), true, but with all of the energy and polish on the thing (you can see your reflection on your woofer if you look while the music is playing), as well as the great songwriting (as always), how can you not like it? When the album first came out I was still in college (lo, those many moons ago), and it was actually reviewed by our school newspaper (the Emory Wheel, for those of you who care) unfavorably. They didn't like it for the same reason most of you guys don't like it - not enough like their other stuff. I don't know, but this makes it all the sweeter to me - I've always wanted to know what MK would sound like if he just let loose vocally, and If You Were Mine sums that right up. Personally the stuff that's so different is the stuff I tend to like more (like Elton John's "Blue Eyes" - there's not a single other song he sings that's like this, but it's one of my favorites). Of course, I like ALL of Level 42 (what with my recent conversion to FN), but there you go. Regards to you all, Benjamin ------------------------------ Subject: Mark King video From: Morgan42 Date: Mon, 01 Jun 1998 17:13:07 +0200 I have found this video (quicktime format) from "live at wembley '87" http://www.aic.se/basslob/bassvid/king.html TCOY, Morgan ------------------------------ Subject: Brand New Heavies From: Benjamin Temko Date: Mon, 1 Jun 1998 10:44:43 -0500 (EST) Someone else mentioned them a couple of digests ago, and I meant to say something about it then, but forgot. I heard these guys for the first time a few weeks back at a party of a friend who also likes Level 42. Definitely worth a listen, everyone - funky and stylish. Extremely listenable. Does anyone have a forwarding address for Royal Moore? I think he signed off the digest a few months ago. I seem to have misplaced his e-mail message detailing his new address. Thanks, Win ------------------------------ Subject: You jammy buggers... From: Dan James Date: Mon, 1 Jun 1998 21:39:06 +0100 All, A few lines to thank all of you who posted your ilf98 photos on the web. For those of us who couldn't make it (Liam and I spent the Saturday the 23rd crying uncontrollably in a darkened corner), it was great to see you all with MK. Looked like you all had a wonderful time. Next year we arrange the family holiday around the fest. Thanks again. Hi ya matey!!! Read this at 10pm on the 1st June and thought "I wonder if they're on now". And what do you know. There they were!!! I've only seen VH-1 play SAY a few times recently and they have also played RITF and Hotwater if I remember (as it was a while ago). They don't get played much but to see 10 in a row on TV!!! Wow. And they played All Over You. Never seen the video for this..(excuse me while I'll just scrap meself from the roof!!!) Anybody else in the UK see this rare TV treat?? I talked to Eric briefly about this Digest sponsored tour, and of course it all depends on whether or not Mark is going to tour here in the first place. But we can find that out easily enough from Eagle Rock Records. Eric also brought up a good point about some of the members being DJs and being able to secure some airplay. How realistic is it to talk to Eagle Rock to give them some guarantees that we are not kidding? Either way, a serious organized effort like raising big $$$ won't go unnoticed, because it's publicity, a financial security (ie an incentive for the company) and it has been done before!!! With the same record company Velve/Eagle Rock Records. Fans of Marillion (the Freaks Digest) raised $50,000 and sponsored the North American tour last year. Unfortunately I couldn't be at ILF but when Mark tours in the U.K. later this year or early next year, I WILL be there (Winston, back me up here ;-]) To get Mark to come to the States even for a limited club tour (places like the Whiskey etc) would finally give everybody a chance to see the man in action (eh, reunion tour??? maybe some time in the next millenium, eh? ;-]) Anybody that puts in their $100,- OF COURSE gets a ticket (yeah, Pat) but sell tickets at the door too. I know plenty of musos and musicians that are not on the Digest but damn well know what a monster Mark is, so they'll be there too. Well, I'm babbling... think about it. Nothing much interesting (all the videos were from either "Level Best" or "Live At Wembley")... **EXCEPT** that they showed the vids for "Love In A Peaceful World" and "All Over You".... which I had not seen before.
