Perhaps we can get him to do an intimate gig in NYC for the die hard fans...... paul F ------------------------------ Subject: God I love this Digest ! From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Fri, 29 May 1998 10:26:14 EDT Hello everyone, I just put up some quick pages of pictures from the Int'l Fest. Keep in mind they are nothing spectacular, but at least give everyone an idea of what took place. There are four pages, and 15 pictures total. I have quite a few more to scan, and 2 more rolls of film waiting to be developed, so expect more in the near future. Here is the URL of the pics: http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/james/378/intfest1.htm Tcoy, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Note for new New Digesters - please read From: Chris Staunton Date: Fri, 29 May 1998 11:44:00 -0400 > Every Saturday night, we meet Mark King and he gives us an update on what > he has been doing and has his photo taken with us. > > Dont forget, every Saturday night in England. They have promised to play us a wonderful set of old favorites and buy us all drinks, so attendance is mandatory! ------------------------------- Chris Staunton chriss @ pcsupplies.com ...gotta get back to BASSics... ------------------------------- ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V98 #142 From: Benjamin Temko Date: Fri, 29 May 1998 12:02:04 -0500 (EST) First of all, KUDOS to Eric for the full fledged report of the ILF. I was wondering mys own self how Mark knew to show up at Joe's, but if he owns the place, well, there it is. Chris gave us this: >Chicago is a great choice, but I would like to suggest Milwaukee--60 >miles to the north. Milwaukee is home to one of the largest annual >outdoor music festivals in the US--Summerfest. Located on our beautiful >lakefront, Summerfest has more than a dozen stages, food, and of course, >lots of our locally brewed beer. I know one of our digest members is >in a band which plays there regularly. Check out the summerfest fun: Milwaukee might even be a better choice, for all it's MUCH easier to get around in. Chicago is so big and bustling (and while London is also big, I found it easy to maneuver around when last I visited), and forget parking or traffic. Either would be fine (but beer makes a *strong* argument for Milwaukee 8) And, even if there's no ILF in the midwest next year, it would seem that there's enough Level 42 fans in the area that maybe getting together for a Mid West Levelfest might not be a bad idea anyway... >For those interested in a video of the ILF, dont despair. > >A suitable copy will be made available so that no-one gets left out. We are >currently deciding the best way to do it. > >(PLEASE NOTE: I was very nervous about filming without official permission, I >hope Mark King did not mind). > >Current options: > >There were 3 videos shot, ideally we would edit them into one and then >distribute that. > >Alternatively, I can just distribute the one I have. I might be the only one, but hey, I'll pay for one of each. Frequently one video angle catches something that you can't see on another video. We had 3 people videotaping my wedding for just this reason, and it turned out to be a great idea - in one shot you see a guy across the room standing still holding a video camera. In another you can see that he's holding it upside-down and teetering quite a lot, drunk out of his mind end enjoying himself immensely. The shot from his video camera, which we managed to procure later, shows what he was enjoying - He wandered across a full length mirror and was getting a kick out of watching himself standing upside-down through the viewfinder.... >Every Saturday night, we meet Mark King and he gives us an update on what he >has been doing and has his photo taken with us. This is mean. Funny as hell, but mean! 8) >I was thinking about making an ILF picture collection CD-ROM, perhaps >"The Official ILF Gallery CD-ROM". I just sent my film to be developed >and scanned, so mine will already be digitized. If the rest of you >will get your best shots scanned and send them to me via internet, >I'll volunteer to edit and burn the discs. This way, we can all have >a souvenir photo album of the event on CD-ROM to cherish forever. >And those who could not attend can live the memories vicariously! >The cost would be only a few bucks per disc (less than $5 each, shipped). Once again, I'll pay for copies of everything. If I'm going to live vicariously though the lucky sods who got to go to the IOW then by god I'm going to be obsessive about it! 8) Great idea though - you can get a ton of photos on one CD. FURTHER PROOF OF MY CONVERSION Sadly, I left my FN at home and couldn't listen to it at work yesterday. I was nearly dismayed at my level of dismay. The day goes by quicker with All Over You blaring through the headphones. 8) Regards to you all, Benjamin PS - Not a single soul has responded to my inquiries regarding a good cheap starter bass to pick up so I can start living my lifelong dream of learning to play it. DRESSLEFT @ WORLDNET.ATT.NET ------------------------------ Subject: more MP3, and GEMM (long) From: Matthew Blackmon Organization: The Lightcraft Studio Date: Fri, 29 May 1998 13:54:22 -0500 Back on the subject of MP3, Steve Crow offered us this- > On the subject of Mp3's. I collect them, and I really want alot of > level42 ones. Why? Because I already OWN most of the cd's and tapes, > and I just want them in computer format. And this is fine! Part of the copyright law states that you have the right to make copies of the stuff you own _for personal use_! This is why making a mix tape of things you own is OK. Furthermore. . . > There > is nothing wrong with converting level42 music into mp3 format. True. If you own the music, you have the right to do that. But. . . > I can > see a good displaimer coming out about "if you download these, you can > use them for your own purposes, but we suggest that you purchase these > songs in their original format if you already dont own them etc" Bzzzz. Sorry Charlie, this is where you're breaking the law. When you purchase a CD (or tape, etc) you are actually purchasing a limited right of use for the material on that piece of media. Your rights to it do not include the right to distribute it, unless you're transfering the media, and all the copies you may have made, to someone else. While this is a nice thought, it's still illegal. > I mean I really dont think mp3's are illegal if you use them for > personal use. Bingo! Personal use is the key phrase. > If you are reproducing these and selling them or creating cd's from > them and making money, then that is a serious issue. Wrong again. The No Electronic Theft Act made the simple distribution of said materials a potential felony. Your getting reimbursed for them doesn't even factor into the equation. You know, this having been said, I do like MP3's too. I have a fabulous CD with everything L42 released (except PP) encoded in MP3, with an encoder, and navigation tool on the disc. I have access to practically all of my L42 collection wherever I hace a CD-ROM. That still doesn't mean that I'm going to go into the business of making MP3 discs. And in all fairness, I am the person that's in charge of distributing AYGB and P&P. Yes, I am breaking the law with every copy of these discs that I send out. To be fair, everyone that's received one has broken the law. So what's my defense? Paul and the boys know about it, and are content with letting it continue so long as nobody's making a profit (and thanks to Kinkos raising the price of a colour copy, there's no danger of that!). The moment one of them tells me that we've fallen out of grace, the party stops. And now, Brian asked. . . > Has anyone ordered anything successfully from GEMM? I ordered two > CD's about a month ago and haven't even heard from them. I've tried > to email whatever address I could find on their site, but no response. > They're from a place called SOUNDS FAMILIAR . I ordered a copy of Einstein on the Beach (Philip Glass) a couple weeks ago. It came in promptly, and at a reasonable cost. If you're having problems with a retailer you hooked up with using GEMM, try writing GEMM with your problem, they're likely to take up your cause. Good luck. (lucky gits!!) >How was Marks hairline?? Any worse He didn't look at all thinning on top to me (though someone cracked a joke to him about Marlee having more hair than he did which amused him). In fact he struck me as looking in extremely good health - he's short and stocky but he looked very trim, fit and full of beans. Well, beginning about four weeks before the ILF I called Ria every Tuesday (her only day working there) to find out if we could use the upstairs flat during the Levelfest. I would just miss her every time, but by the third call they knew exactly who I was, that I was from the states, and that about 30 of us were coming for Mark. They were well ready for us, because they sounded excited when I talked to them about it and even gave us a bunch of free food! My persistance paid off, I suppose, and I personally thanked her for bringing him. I'm working on the ILF Picture CD, and this video thing got me thinking...what about editing the videos and putting them on CD? I have excellent .avi-making capability, but no .mpg-encoding. Either format would work. Of course, only short clips would be practical, because of the immense space required for video. But a CD-ROM of ILF video clips could be pretty entertaining.
