Hansen" Organization: Worldmachine Technologies Corporation Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 22:25:35 -0400 (EDT) Hi folks, well here's *my* LONG, play-by-play account of the International LevelFest '98, held this past weekend in London and Ryde (Isle of Wight). This may very well be my longest post to the Digest *ever*, so bear with me. Thursday -------- I arrived in London Thursday night, checked into my hotel, and then trucked out to meet Don Zipf at his hotel. Nice cab ride... not only do you Brits drive on the wrong... err, I mean left side of the road, but you put Boston drivers to shame as far as craziness is concerned. Anyways. Don and I met for the first time, and I was knighted with the fabulous Level 42 Digest pin... anyone interested in getting one of these great collectibles should contact Don directly at: DonZipf @ aol.com Don and I headed out at about midnight in search for beer and food. After getting refused at both the Hard Rock and Planet Hollywood (since it was too late), we finally found a sports bar where we could hanker down with some beer and fries ("chips", that is.) Incidentily, I was surprised at how many of the beers available were American. Interesting enough, Sam Adams (originally brewed in Boston) is called "Boston" in the UK. After a few pints, Don and I called it a night and headed back to our respective hotels. Friday ------ Friday was the "official" first meeting day for the London-side events. I met up with Tony B, Morgan, Kristin, Don, Jennifer and Dan in front of Harrod's department store just south of Hyde Park. After hanging around there for a bit, we headed over to the Lido cafe on "The Serpentine" in Hyde Park for some refreshments. Note about Hyde Park: what a great place! I'm a big fan of urban parks, and this one ranks very highly in my book... somewhat similar to D.C. "mall". Anyways, since we had officially been "together" for at least thirty minutes at this point, things expectedly started to get a bit nutty... A point of contention early on, I still don't the correct pronunciation for "BROS" (the French version sounds like "bras"). The next stop was 3pm at "The Orangery" at Kensington Palace. We met up with the same crowd, plus Bruce Conrad (word-up to the Boston posse!), Winston and Lolita (who arrived late & already bickering at each other After tea, coffee, spirits and lots of cake (no crumpets, however...), we swung by Lolita and Winston's hotel (sort of... long story) and picked up the official ILF '98 shirts that Lolita had shipped by mail. GREAT job on these, by the way... I know that they're going fast (if not already gone!) so email LolitaJ @ aol.com if interested in buying one. The design is really nice, on high-quality 100% cotton Hanes Beefy-T's. At this point, everyone was already having a great time making new friends and looking forward to the events that would follow. After getting the shirts and tromping back through Hyde Park, we headed off for the 7:30 checkpoint at My Dutch Pancake House. After a tube ride and a long walk (not that I was complaining we ended up at this pancake/crepe restaurant where we met up with Teresa and friend and Steve "Diceman" (sorry Steve, I don't remember your last name.) There, at the first official alcohol stop, the tone for the rest of the weekend was set. We managed to get the waiter to put the Level 42 Remixes into the CD player, after which they probably regretted doing so. We spent the next hour or so eating, drinking, and boisterously chanting along to our fave Level tunes. We split from MDPH and headed off for our next and last Friday-night stop at the Dog House. This place, staked out by our saviour/tour guide Lolita, turned out to be a hip acid-jazz bar. They played some funky tunes, of which I really only remember Brand New Heavies. In any event, I had my first-ever Mickey's Big Mouth beer, which ironically turns out to be a really crappy American beer, but oh well (Winston says "this is what I drank before I was old enough to drink.") At the Dog House, we met up with Richard Smith, his wife and pals, Lars from Sweden (skol!) and Rob Steen and significant other (sorry Rob -- don't know if that's your girlfriend, fiance or wife!) After "closing down" the Dog House, we all adjourned to our respective hotels/houses in anticipation for our "big day." Saturday -------- Saturday morning, a bunch of us left early for Portsmouth/Ryde/IOW to do some sightseeing around the Isle. Since I was already jet-lagged and sleep deprived, I made plans to meet up with Lars for some late-morning record shopping around London. We trucked around the Soho area of for a few hours, then hiked down Regent St (?) past the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben (dinggggg!) We boarded the train from London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbor, and enjoyed a 1:45 ride through the UK countryside. Once in Portsmouth, Lars and I checked into our hotel (thanks to Tony S for arranging that!) and then took the 15-minute ferry from Portsmouth to Ryde to meet up with the "rest of the bunch" at world-famous Joe Daflo's. Joe Daflo's ends up being a pretty nice place -- nicer than I had expected. The town of Ryde, in fact, is rather quaint and hip at the same time... I wish I had spent more time there, but our schedules were packed as it was. Once at Joe Daflo's, we met up with the remaining ILF'ers -- except Benji, of course, who was busy playing golf (sorry, I couldn't resist that jab!) Anyways, we all drank beers, wine, coffee, etc. and enjoyed some pizza "on the house." At the point that there were 32 (I think) of us there, we basically filled the bar completely. I think there might have been two people in there that weren't part of the ILF crowd, and they definitely were curious to find out what was going on. Thanks to Don Z *again* for providing us with very cool "back stage passes" (ALL ACCESS)... this helped greatly for people to meet each other and get names straight. So after enjoying ourselves for a few hours, everything suddenly went nuts. What happened? Well, as everyone knows by now, Mark King *did* in fact show up. He stealthily came in through the back with his s.o. Ria and youngest daughter. He was *extremely* cordial and accomodating, and took the time to meet and talk with everyone. I was really pretty amazed at this. You'd think that after years of meeting fans, doing promotional stints, tv shows, etc., he would be totally burnt and perhaps bitter. Not so -- I think the general sentiment was that he in fact appreciated this show of support, and had a good time himself. Everyone scrambled to figure out what memorabilia to get signed, which didn't end up being too much of a problem since many people had brought along rare items from their collections. Thanks to Bilal for helping to overcome my starstruck'ness by shoving me forward to meet Mark Having traveled overseas, the only thing I had with me that seemed worthwhile to have Mark sign was my business card, which proudly reads "WORLDMACHINE Technologies Corporation." I gave Mark the 15-second blurb about how I was such a fan that I started a company with World Machine as our namesake. He was really a genuinely nice guy, and meeting him after having been a fan for so long was an experience that I won't forget. I think Mark stayed for about a half hour, and after meeting people, signing autographs and posing for snapshots, he gave us a briefer on what we was up to. He said that he'd been somewhat down for a while, but he had just finised recording his new album, and that it was due out later this year (September?). He was really enthusiastic about his new album, which has substantial contributions from Boon. The label is Eagle Rock Records, and we're already organizing a letter-writing campaign to get everyone to show their support for Mark. See Lars post in this Digest edition. After Mark left JDF's, and things quieted down, we all started making plans for the next stop that night: the Raytheon Marine social club, which was back in Portsmouth. HUGE thanks to Tony Sharpe for arranging this evening. Man, what a party! Full bar, kickin' sound system, instruments and amps, video and TV and of course AWESOME people. At the club, we all listened to music, jammed on bass, guitar, vocals, and danced the night away. I swear, this was like a dream come true. A room full of COOL people, all sharing their love for great music. The party lasted until about 2:30pm or so (?), at which point we closed things up and returned to our hotels/houses. Sunday ------ The remainder of the weekend was a denoument, but with yet more fun... Sunday morning, most of us met at the Hotel Ibis for breakfast - no haggis, though... =( after which we set about returning to London. Mark Tweedale and I tromped around London, seeing a few sights, including Buckingham Palace and the changing of the guards. We met up at Piccadilly Circus at 3:30pm with a bunch more ILF'ers for YMCS (yet more CD shopping.) Later that night, Winston, Lolita, Don, Kristin, Adam (Adz), Dan and I went to see James Taylor Quartet at the London Forum. This was a *great* show... the final stop on their UK tour to promote their latest album. They had a twelve piece band, including 5 horns and both male and female vocals. As they say in the UK, "totally heaving!" Monday ------ Monday was my final day there, and I needed to be at the airport by late afternoon. I know that a bunch of people went to Bath for the day to do some tourist stuff. But victims of one-track minds, Winston and I opted to meet up and scour Soho for records/CD's (YMCS). We did end up getting some good stuff, but mostly 'used' -- the prices for new CD's in London are absurd! I spotted a live Incognito CD that I really wanted, but at 31 UK pounds (about US$50), I had to pass. Finale ------ Well, that's it... I had a thoroughly WONDERFUL time, and I'd like to extend my heartfelt thanks to EVERYONE who attended. Although I didn't have the time to meet _everyone_ and engage in meaningful conversation, I did manage to hang out and get to know most people and get. One of the great things about this whole event was that it was an extended, well-orchestrated plan. There was plenty of time to relax with everyone and really get to know people beyond just name/hometown sort of stuff. I've made new friendships that I know will last for many, many years to come. Anyone considering a visit to the Boston area, please look me up! Ok, whew! I think that's it. To sum things up: this was really a spectacular event. Everyone that I met was so amazingly cool! What a great bunch of people. I'm eagerly looking forward to the next event! TCOY, Eric Level 42 Digest -- Eric J. Bilal ------------------------------ Subject: NEWS FROM BOON From: "LOZ Green" Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 14:06:41 +0100 Hello everyone, I have finished my exams now and Im a free man! Except I start work on Monday :-(. I will never forgive the university that my exams stopped me attending the ILF. I have recently had word from Boon about Marks Album. Two of the 10 songs were written by Mark and are from his previously scrapped album. These Songs are: Changing Of The Guard (which would have been the title of the unissued album) Pamela The other 8 songs have lyrics by Boon and music by Mark and Boon only told me the best 5 which are: Swimming With The Sky One Man If I Had Something To Tell You Bitter Moon Resupply I have shown Boon the preliminary artwork for my fanzine 'Word Machine' which he said 'looks great to me' ,admittedly this isnt the grates accolade ever but its better than nothing. I was wondering/hoping about printing. I have a hewlet packard 690C which I originally intended to print the fanzine on (and I still will do if this doesnt work). Does anyone have access to a good quality (very fast) colour printer and would they be willing to print the fanzine. The fanzine will be strictly non-profit making and naturally all printing costs would be covered and initially I would want about 200 copies probably 5 A4 sheets printed on both sides to make a 20 page A5 booklet. That would be 1000 A4 prints. Otherwise the whole thing will be done on my 690C. I have a full pictorial worldwide discography. Interviews with band members, pictures of just about all the Elite stuff you could care to mention including strategy, Love meeting Love clear vinyl, Dazz 4 typed labels, Dazz 4 hand written labels, Love meeting Love 7" acetate, Dazz 4 acetate, and possibly the orginal contract. SO IF YOU CAN SERIOUSLY HELP THEN PLEASE GET IN TOUCH. IT probably wont be for a couple of months anyway. LOZ. Boon says Mark has a massive backlog of recorded material, also Boon has been writing extensively this year and hope to try and release some material soon. (All information about Marks album is from Boon) Also I have copies of the book 'Level 42 The Definitive Biography' for sale, mail me if you want more details. ------------------------------ Subject: Best thing ever From: Chuck Roehm Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 13:11:51 +0000 >The same thing popped up in the description of Fait Accompli that I saw in >a video index somewhere. Cool song, though, if you're into candy-coated synth pop. I wonder if it had to be listed for some sort of copyright reason? From: "Steve Crow" Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 11:30:25 -0500 I probably missed this one too... but does anyone have any pages with pictures etc of the get together? Id love to see what Mark's bar looked like etc.. and how everything went. On the subject of Mp3's. I collect them, and I really want alot of level42 ones. Why? Because I already OWN most of the cd's and tapes, and I just want them in computer format. I can't convert tapes or records to mp3 with my current setup. I can make them from cd though. But the cool thing about mp3's is that I can play them in what ever order I want, without having to skip cd's or whatever. You can make your own playlists of hundreds of songs which makes for better listening. There is nothing wrong with converting level42 music into mp3 format. I can see a good displaimer coming out about "if you download these, you can use them for your own purposes, but we suggest that you purchase these songs in their original format if you already dont own them etc" I mean I really dont think mp3's are illegal if you use them for personal use. If you are reproducing these and selling them or creating cd's from them and making money, then that is a serious issue. Most of us are just fans who want to hear music that is not available to them or want it in a different format. Some of the rare stuff, if anyone made them into mp3 I'd love to get them. Who wouldn't? But where you buy stuff like that now? If I could buy some of the stuff you guys in europe had access to, I'd buy them over here. So the next medium is to get mp3's. Well thats my logic behind it anyway. I also agree with that other person from Toronto who mentioned about the price of singles and cd's nowdays. Hopefully the advent of mp3's will lower prices to be a little more affordable. ------------------------------ Subject: ILF Video From: Bilal42 @ aol.com Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 12:24:39 EDT For those interested in a video of the ILF, dont despair. The digest is devoted to discussing things related to the group Level 42, even though they officially split up in 1994. This last weekend 34 of us went from all over the world (US, UK, France, Belgium, Ireland and Sweden) to Ryde, Isle of Wight. We met up at Joe DaFlo's cafe&bar. During the evening Mark King showed up and told us that his solo album will be released in September instead of June, as we had originally heard through other channels. I'm just writing these lines to let you know that Mark King has a following of devoted people who respect him immensly as a musician. We are all eagerly awaiting this release so we hope that you do everything in your power to get it out as soon as possible. As I said there are 572 of us who on a daily basis keep contact via the Internet and share news, views and opinions. This must surely mean that we are the tip of the iceberg of fans, old and new, who will buy the album when it's released. I would like you to know that you choosing to release his material makes us very happy. On behalf of my friends in the US I would like to say that if you can find a way to release it there it would make them very happy as well. I haven't heard any of the material myself, but I understand it would probably suit the US market very well. So again, there are a lot of us waiting... Yours, Lars-Ove Larsson p.s. This is an item I saw perhaps a decade ago on CD but didn't want to chance forking over $20+ so I passed and never saw it again, until Sunday. I slid it out of the rack and it was only 99 cents!!! Seriously, only 1 cent less than a buck. It's not bad either. I didn't expect more Level 42 and didn't get more, but the cassette does have some interesting moments. Oh yeah, they had at least 2 more copies at 99 cents each. Drop me a line if you're interested. BTW: Welcome back all you ILF'ers. The machine stops. John ------------------------------ Subject: ILF Picture CD From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 17:36:00 EDT I was thinking about making an ILF picture collection CD-ROM, perhaps "The Official ILF Gallery CD-ROM". I just sent my film to be developed and scanned, so mine will already be digitized. If the rest of you will get your best shots scanned and send them to me via internet, I'll volunteer to edit and burn the discs. This way, we can all have a souvenir photo album of the event on CD-ROM to cherish forever. And those who could not attend can live the memories vicariously! The cost would be only a few bucks per disc (less than $5 each, shipped). What do you think? Z ------------------------------ Subject: Them on Vh1... Yes, making sure > that those discs arrive safely could run into some expense, but look at > the alternative- stealing from the band you claim to love. Has anyone ordered anything successfully from GEMM? I ordered two CD's about a month ago and haven't even heard from them. I've tried to email whatever address I could find on their site, but no response. They're from a place called SOUNDS FAMILIAR . There is a great bar we could have it in. They have a great staff and even have surfboards on the walls. Great food too. I know the guys from Australia would like it here. (not as far as mainland US for them.) I'm glad you all had a great time at IOW. I am still jealous. Well, that's all for now. Lee'Ann
