Very little, indeed. long time, no What ho! (not from me, anyway) I have been lurking, ever since a change of job (and hence e-ddress). The answer to the question "What was this?" lies in the answer to the question "Who was the 'comedic' man?". I seem to recollect it may have been somebody like Ben Elton or Rik Mayall. I'm sorry I can't be more definate. Maybe try the Internet Movie database at http://www.imdb.com/ - they do TV too. Interesting combination of Blackadder, Young ones ("anarchic comedy") and Antiques Roadshow (Granny shows _her_ granny's old stuff to a presenter who describes it's history and how it's now worth squillions and she ought to insure it for heaps and move to a high security house with guard dogs and gun-turrets) Perhaps I exaggerated a bit there but you get the idea. So I'm really jealous I didn't go to the ILF last weekend. Gnashing of teeth and green eyes! How did Mr. King know you were all there? Did somebody behind the counter call him up saying "There's this rowdy bunch singing L42 songs, you've got to come and take a look!" Grrr! I wish I'd been there. I wish I'd been there. For the rest of us, don't take it harshly or feel like it's been "rubbed in". Even if Lolita _guaranteed_ a reunion of the band for the next get-together, many of us still couldn't make it (due to a couple of things called mortgage and marriage). For the amount of work these guys have done to organize this event, the digest, the digest CD's, they completely deserve everything that happened on Saturday. Congratulations!! The issue of MP3's is a murky one. I've taped some unreleased or live tracks of various artists onto my MiniDisc. In all cases, I'd prefer a commercially released, superior sounding version. But in fairness to the Industry, it doesn't always make sense to release various odds and sods. But having said that, and this may sound wierd, but music piracy of any sort is a good thing. Anything that keeps the RIAA on their toes, and that can eventually somehow make them realise that many in the public will not put up with the gouging and unbelievable mark-up on retail CD's. Sorry, SONY, Warner Bros, etc - but I'm not paying because you lose money on overpriced contracts to REM, U2 and Janet Jackson (I happen to like these artists). So, until people can pay about $8 US for all single CD's, they will continue to make their own MP3's, burn their own CD's, etc. There will always be thiefs, but for the majority to lay back and put up with the conspiracy known as "CD pricing" - well I can't. What do you all think of Music Clubs? I know that they only have Level Best (as far as this digest is concerned), but I pay about $4 Canadian for my CD's on average. The RIAA, though not the labels (who own these clubs), are against Music Clubs. Wonder why?? Cliff Barua - Toronto ------------------------------ Subject: The next fest? I'm a 26 year old girl from Belgium and speak Dutch. I was at the ILF in Joe Daflo's too. Don't need to say that it was realy great. Thanks to all of you who were there. (I believe there were 34 people, if I counted right). Can't wait to see my pictures and the pictures of the others. I travelled 9 h. (It's a very long time, Belgium is really no far from England) to get at Joe Daflo's but was worth it. Thanks to Tony Sharpe to help me to find a place to sleep and for a great time at his club. Thanks to Adrian, I had a wonderfull evening with you. Adrian, you get your picture about you and Mark King but I have still pictures to shoot, so it can take a while. Thanks to the other digesters aswell to make it a big Week-end. I had the chance to make a little chat with Ria (Mark's girlfriend or wife), she speaks dutch too, she was really nice and said that Mark enjoyed it, he was really proud that a few fans came from very far to see him. Mark's daughter Marlee was there as well, she looks just like Mark. Thanks for that super week-end. Greetings (I'm sorry if I wrote some or many mistakes, but I'm a dutch girl) ------------------------------ Subject: The White Funky Liner Notes. From: Paul Hammond Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 15:25:42 -0000 Hi all, Firstly, a big thanks to all involved with the ILF. Great days! Secondly, I just got a copy of White Funky on CD but, it has no liner notes. I remember a while ago someone put the graphics for these up somewhere on the net and I was just wondering if they were still around at all. Thanks, PH. I'd love to know. The same thing popped up in the description of Fait Accompli that I saw in a video index somewhere. If you have that video, listen very carefully to the music playing in the Netherlands stadium while the audience is coming in, before L42 actually starts playing. That's the song. I can't hear much of it and/or who's performing it, or why people think it's necessary to consider it an integral part of the video, but it's there. As for how it fits into the context of the program you're describing, it's anyone's guess. John ------------------------------ Subject: Fall Of The House Of Usher From: The Saint Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 19:05:41 -0400 Well, I was in Wal Mart today (I'm cheap I know) and saw some discounted videos and behind about 30 Godzilla movies I found two copies of "The Fall Of The House Of Usher" with Vincent Price. The back cover said it was based on the Poe stories and the sequal to "The House Of Usher". I did not pick it up (only $2.50 US dollars) because I found "Plan 9 From Outer Space" by Ed Wood at $2.50. It's supposed to be the funniest Sci-Fi classic ever..... Although Wood didn't mean for it to be that way. Like I said, there is one US copy if anybody wants it let me know... It's a REAL stretch to tie it into Level 42, but hey, it makes a unigue L42 related collectible......... I'll have to get one just for the hell of it...... Glad many of you enjoyed my "Godzilla VS Mark King"... I may do a segual with another famous movie monster (gee, who could that be???) paul F PS. Jane, your True Colours went in the post today..... ------------------------------ Subject: Mark King at Joe DaFlo's From: lol @ slr.se Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 15:04:28 +0100 I'd just like to add some things about what Mark told us. He said that the reason his album won't be released until september is that it is SO GOOD he and the record company decided to give it a september release so it would have a good chance of getting attention. He said that it DOESN'T have a name yet, but since Boon helped him write the lyrics "...Boon, you remember Boon, right?..." they had discussed using the name "Boon Barking" or "Barking Boon". He mentioned some of the names of the songs, but I can't for the life of me remember any of them. Somebody who videotaped this will surely fill that bit in. He also mentioned that he was feeling a lot better about himself now and was eager to get on the road with this material. We were all so dumbstruck by his showing up I don't think anyone remembered to ask him about the re-issues. If anybody DID ask him tete-a-tete please let us know his reply. Just meeting someone you respect so much, getting to shake his hand and exchange a few words is so overwhelming you go into zombiemode. Your head doesn't work straight. Like Lolita said on the ferry from the Isle - having been a fan of his for so long, you finally meet him, and you just don't know what to say. Overall Mark seemed generally very thankful that we had made the effort to come from all over the globe to the IOW for this event. Oh, and when asked about if the album would be released in the US he replied that "well, if you make enough noise at the record company...". I'm sure when everybody else is back from the UK someone else can give a better report of the International Level Fest itself. I just wanted to pass along the info we got (or at least the parts I got). Lars-Ove Larsson ------------------------------ Subject: say hello!!!!!!! Congrats to all involved, and I hope to join the next excursion to IOW, whenever it happens. Otherwise: I'm five months into my CBS News career and enjoying every minute of it. One of my pals here at the radio network, Mike Noble, is even a bigger funk fan than I am. I can always look forward to coming in and hitting the Digest early in my shift...and the day suddenly becomes more tolerable. I'm also fascinated about the debate over the question of which cut to leave off "Forever Now." Seeing that there's no consensus, I can only guess that it's pretty hard. One thing I know...it seems that "Guaranteed," not "Forever Now," is the most controversial L42 album because of its more-rock sound and Gary Husband's obvious influence. It's a marked departure from the old L42 sound. (Despite that, I enjoy it and give it a spin from time to time.) My fave albums remain "World Machine" and "Forever Now" (Resurgence). Fave singles as of now are "The Sunbed Song," "World Machine" and the high-energy remix of "Heaven In My Hands." But....(HELP ME DRUMMERS OUT THERE) Did Phil use Zildjian K's for the bottom and top? K's on bottom, A's on top? What combo. I know Phil stated what he played in a "Modern Drummer" magazine in 1987. It only means that the remastering process itself has been done > on 20-bit machines, and that there has been extra care regarding the whole > mastering process. Well, I take "20-bit remastering" to refer to those discs which are special releases marketed specifically as "high-resolution" CD's such as HDCD or HRCD. Of course, if a 20-bit origianl master tape is simply dithered down to 16-bit (such as with Apogee UV-22 or Sony Super Bit Mapping), I guess you could call them 20-bit mastered discs. But "20-bit REmastering", I think refers to taking a master tape, of whatever resolution, and using one of the trademarked 20-bit processes. This, apparently, is the source of the confusion. If you've never seen a disc such as I'm describing, go the the CD store and ask about 20-bit remasters, especially in the Jazz or Classical sections. Check out the labeling on the discs. Got home this evening, and just finished sorting through all the e-mail piled in my box. Well, I'm now experiencing ILF post-partem depression. Back to real life, which hardly compares to the fun I've had the past week, cavorting about England with my new and wonderful friends! And, of course, the Joe DaFlo's experience now seems surreal - I will definitely need to see some video to make it real again. I think there are some pin orders in the stack of hard mail over on the chair. I'll get to them straightaway. Mark King, himself, put one on his shirt Saturday night, and I like to think it's now enjoying new residence in his sock drawer. So, if you haven't already, e-mail me about how to get yours! So who in Europe wants to come to the US next winter? I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm already scheming.... Stuart Mcalister - I tried to e-mail you the pin info, but neither of your e- mail addresses worked! Try again. Oh, my feet hurt! - Z.
