I could be really repetitive and list all those who were outstanding but..........no sod it, I'll do it anyway : Eric If it wasn't for the digest we wouldn't have been there. What more can I say ? Lolita You're the one who got it all together, and you sorted the T-shirts (awesome), and you can sing so fine !!!!! Morgan I salute you. My chin was round about my ankles - literally dumbstruck with your talent !!! Fantastic. Tony B. You must be sleeping for weeks after using up all that energy. Tony S. Great club, great hospitality. Special thanks for sorting a hotel room for me. (You even bought everyone the first round - what a guy) Adam I can't believe that you kept apologising for your guitar playing !!! Awesome Andy Trumpeter most fine. But, I'm sure that I was more pissed (drunk) than you by the end of the night. (what do you expect for Stella at £1.50 a pint) Most of all I thank everyone for being there 'cos although there were some special individuals, everyone together made it what it was !!!!! From: Sean Kane Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 10:35:36 -0400 (EDT) Hi All, Still aching that I had to miss ILF (and Mark!), but I'm glad everyone had a good time. On the positive side, by remaining in the states I was here to received (and accept) my dream-job!!! I'm heading for L.A. and joining Jet Propulsion Labs in August. I am sure that is the case too in many other countries. > Importing is too risky and expensive. You've contradicted yourself. You say that MP3 is the ONLY (emphasis yours) means of obtaining these tracks, but then go on to mention that importing the music legaly is too risky and expensive. When you rely on the MP3's as your source for the music, you've circumvented the musician's primary means of making a living- selling music! Saying that there's just too music risk involved in trying to get the music through legal channels is a crap out. Try going to http://www.gemm.com and look at the great amount of Level 42 stuff available to you through legal channels. Yes, making sure that those discs arrive safely could run into some expense, but look at the alternative- stealing from the band you claim to love. I'm really glad you guys had such a blast - nice to know of a community of fans on the net that doesn't reduce to a bunch of slobbering witless cads (at least, not until after SEVERAL drinks...) at the slightest provocation. I've been playing it over and over in my mind to savour it and make sure that I won't forget a single thing. I won't repeat what has been said so far, but I'd simply like to say a sincere and heartfelt thanks to all involved, both organiser and attendee alike, for making it the day that it was. MK was just brilliant. What a great bloke. His turning up turned a truly memorable day into an unforgettable day. I'm still in a daze! When we shook hands I made sure that my thumb rubbed against his in the hope that some of the magic rubbed off. Nothing so far, it may take some time to sink in. Anyway, now MK probably thinks I'm a Free Mason ! Having missed L42 live too many times in the past, when MK tours I plan to catch a couple of his dates, maybe we could organise something amongst us to meet up and follow a few ? Anyway more of that nearer the time. For all of those that might know me i'd like to say a big HELLO. If you were at the Raytheon Club after the meet with the "Master" himself, I'm the poor sad person who was playing Golf. I'd like to thank Adam for pointing that out to everyone and for making me feel as tall as thumbelina. Hey that sounds like a cool name for you Adam. MK thunderthumbs - you thumbelina. Only joking, you can surely play a mean Bass and i'm extremely jealous. Thanks to Tony Sharpe ( a good friend of mine) for cool organisation of the bash. I was rather Drunk at the end of the night, and Kirstin, if i offended you at all accept my deepest apologies. I don't think i did but i'm just apologising just in case. Any way, all i can say is i met some terrific people and you can count me in for the next fest. Chow for now. I just wanted to say what a kick I've been getting out of all the posts regarding the IOW get together. Keep the stories coming. There is, however, a post from the digest today that just doesn't sit right with me. It's the one that begins: "To all you 'unfortunate' digesters out there who missed the ILF-- Sorry! but I have to rub it in- YOU MISSED ONE HELL OF A WEEKEND!" The sad news is that the vast majority of the digesters fall in this "unfortunate" category. I know that so many of us would have loved to have been able to attend but could not due to circumstances beyond our control. No one who wasn't there needs anything "rubbed in." We're well aware of the kind of amazing experience we missed. The vibe of the digest has always been really friendly and generous. Sentiments like these run counter to that vibe. So, have some grace and go easy on those who weren't there. The digest will be better for it. thanks, Laurel ------------------------------ Subject: I take it back! I'm sorry!!! From: Benjamin Temko Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 16:21:24 -0500 (EST) Allright, I take it back. I'm officially a fan of FN. I know earlier I stated that it was my least favorite L42 album ("where did this come from?", were my exact words, I believe...). I was wrong. I admit it. This album is waaaay too much fun. I suppose I was so thoroughly impressed by Guaranteed and the energetic pulse it carried (who here hasn't screamed along with If You Were Mine at the very top of thier lungs? You haven't? Oh, uh.... me neither ... I was, um, just wonderin...) that the relative laid-backedness of FN threw me. Seems whiny and plastic. Once again, through the magic of repeated listening and critical thinking, and comparing it to earlier albums and listening for common threads - the James Brownian "Ow!" of the Sunbed Song (kickin bass riff), the "Turn it On" revisited, the beautiful ending to LIaPW - and what exactly is that at the bookends of Billy's Gone? "yow(yow), weiyow(yow)(yo) weyow(yow), weiyow(yow)yo..". COnsider me a convert. I have seen the error of my ways. I am ready to preach the gospel of the King! Mark King! WooHoo! Please excuse the harsh language but I as you've probably guessed I wasn't at the ILF '98. I'm returning home to Ireland from San Francisco on June 21st and the ILF was a little too close to that date for me to go and not get into trouble. But, Mark King was there! well stink on it anyhow. I'm dying to see the pictures etc. So, it's called "Barking Moon" eh? Excellent. If the next ILF is out that way (Isle of Wight) I can make next years!! Cheers fellow levelheads! From: Julian Arnold Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 16:09:01 -0700 Saturday Greg Jamate offered us: "Are you sure you do not mean Bassist magazine, the English publication? Bass Player, the American magazine has no feature on Mark in July's issue and is planning to feature Jeff Ament next month. There were posts about Bassist hinting at a Mark King feature here recently. For those interested, BP's July edition has comparisons of inexpensive four string basses." I just got my copy of Bass Player and I was a little dissappointed but no worries Wal! I would dearly like to subscribe to Bassist and I would very very much like to get a hold of this issue about Mark King. I'll be in Ireland next month but if one of our UK friends could snake a copy I would pay for it of course!!! Please let know Level friends! It might help to ease the nastiness of not being at the ILF DAMMIT! ah well, I'll just keep repeating "serenity now" over and over and I'll be o.k. Loundy" Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 21:30:00 -0500 Hello! I just happened across this list in the course of my seemingly never ending struggle to find a copy of Mike Lindup's solo album... I was asked to introduce myself, so here goes. I am an attorney (but don't hold that against me) working in the areas of intellectual property and computer law (particularly Internet issues) living near Chicago. More than you'd ever care to hear about me can be found on my web page at http://www.Loundy.com/ . I have been a Level 42 fan for a bit over a decade. I would include among my favorite Level 42 songs: Hot Water (probably the first I ever heard) Kansas City Milkman Love in a Peaceful World Children Say My Father's Shoes Lasso the Moon Just about everything on "World Machine" Dune Tune As long as I have your attention, excuse me if this is a FAQ, but whatever has become of the Goulds? From: "Richard J. Reddick" Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 00:33:49 -0400 Wow! What a weekend, eh?!? Sorry I missed it! I've spent the past few months lurking out of fear that I'd lose time from studies if I posted anything. But that's all over, graduation June 4! Congrats to all of the other students on the Digest on finishing another year... I can't believe the ILFers got to meet Mark! You guys are mad cool because you have experienced the "Man" close up! I suppose the Digest has reached another high point. I look forward to hearing all of your stories... piccies... etc. I suppose the latest item of interest would be a) the re-issues... did anyone ask Mark about that? Of course, he may have little to do with them... but I am looking forward to re-stocking my collection! I'd like to start a thread about YOUR wish list for the re-issues. Extra tracks? B-sides? Remixes? Personally, I'd like as many remixes on the new albums as possible--case in point, if you're one of the "I hate SATS" contingent, you really *have* to hear the remixes of THC, TAL, HIMH... it gives you a whole new perspective on the album. You get the bass parts that are pretty much obscured on the album, and Alan's guitar work is mastery--particularly the solo bits that were edited out on HIMH. A few demos would be cool, so we can note the progress of the songs (Any Sting fans, sort of like the version of "We'll Be Together" on Fields of Gold). b), the Boon debate. Everyone seems to be on the right page with this one... it was a very bold and provocative statement to suggest that Boon wasn't all that! IMHO he complemented the band's make-up and direction while he was in the band. I love Boon because he's Boon, but I thought Al Murphy was a great new direction for the band. Instead of finding Boon mark II, our boys found a guy who was much more aggressive and punchy. That, to me, speaks about the power and talent of L42. Obviously Mark was always the main star in the show, but with Al on board, I imagine he was starting to pick up some of the attention. I can't overstate what a tragedy it was to lose such a talent. Holdsworth was incredible; his playing on Guaranteed is nothing short of magnifique!!! ATGD is perhaps the best track from this era--I can't believe that it was a B-side and tracks like "The Ape" were on the album. Jakko, I can't speak of, because I've only heard his stuff on Zaphod's disc, and it sounded pretty okay. If I were to critique FN--which I agree with most Digesters, grows on you with time, it's that there isn't enough guitar! Anyway... I wanted to know 2 things--first, are there any Digesters in the Central Coast region of California (San Luis Obispo and thereabouts)? I'm moving there in August. Incidentally, San Luis Obispo is the home of MusicMan... and I'm thinking of upgrading to a new bass that I can learn to slap on. My Korean Squier P-bass gives me a lot of buzz... so what are some good (inexpensive) models I might want to check out? I don't think I'll be getting an Alembic soon, with my student debt... Looking forward to hearing from you all, Rich. ------------------------------ Subject: Brilliant? From: Colin Campbell Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 02:31:02 -0700 So I'm flipping channels with my new TCI digital cable thingy, and I come across one of my new channels called BBC America. And I see all of six seconds, maybe, of the end of a comedy show called "Brilliant." And Mark King is on stage, and a man comedically is stopping the performance, which is then followed by an quick end credit card. So what the heck was this? I searched the digest archive, and saw no discussion. I didn't catch the year in the copyright, but it looked like Jakko was on stage, and the rest of the programming on this channel seems to be reruns (Blackadder the Third, The Young Ones, Antiques Roadshow) but what do I know about British television? Very little, indeed. Oh, and one other maddening note. This was the second showing this evening of "Brilliant," and undoubtedly a repeat (at 1:30am) of the 7:30pm showing. (This is the pattern followed by this channel.) Sigh. So had I seen it earlier, I would have been able to roll tape on the repeat. Sigh.
