I think Billy's Gone is a great song. It has an overall mellow feel, but really grooves underneath. I like songs where you can close your eyes and listen. You can hear all the instruments individually and how they mix together to make the whole sound. Billy's Gone does this for me - it's a great "small group" song. I think that the Resurgence version is a better representation of Billy's Gone as a song. The lyrics are indeed improved and they seem to have done more with the harmonies. However, as a bass player I would say that the RCA version is more indulgent as the bass and drums are quite a bit more forward in the mix. Also, if any of you like "meditative introspective" music with flawless production and sound quality and _great_ songwriting, let me recommend highly Shawn Colvin's "A Few Small Repairs". This CD has been around a while so many of you may have heard it already. Shawn has a great voice. She sounds especally good on the third track, with Lyle Lovett on harmonies. Really, really cool. Could anybody tell me what other Shawn Colvin recordings are good? -Will ------------------------------------------ Will Greer Empower Solutions LLC Denver, Colorado (303) 888-7154 Will_Greer @ empowersolutions.com http://www.empowersolutions.com ------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Subject: Re: a cappella & more RTV From: Henri.Blakenburg @ DUT.RWS.minvenw.nl Date: Tue, 20 Jan 98 15:14:44 +0200 Hey Starchilds, 2 Jenn: I didn't even knew about that a cappella thing. Carl wrote about that in Digest numba 7 (THANX CARL !!). And so i dropt another mail at the WDR redaktion. Right after the answer that they agree, i did mailed a "VIELEN DANK !! (thanx very much)" to Peter Ruechel as well, cos he always answers. So i am also very curious to! Maybe other digest members have already seen it and can describe that a cappella thing for us all!! Like Andre i have also dropt several mails to station "Veronica", but never got an answer. Maybe we must drop 543 mails to rerun some L42 stuff on RTV. On 10 dec. 1981 "Ferry Maats soulshow" of Dutch "TROS" radio was sending out a concert in real time. Our boys ended with "Love games" but it was not send out complete. About 2 weeks after that concert, "TROS" did send out the complete song as also "Wings of love" (whith a fantastic synchronice percussion break !) It ends whith a jammin' Mark and Mike. Well my tape ended at the middle of that jammin' session. I have also dropt a mail at "TROS" to rerun that concert on radio but there was no answer in replay. Well, i'll try it again, and again, and again and ............ Take care of yourselfs. Then yesterday, Eric wrote: > And re: Wally's albums, those of you who've heard WOAM but not his > first CD "Echos" will be pleasantly surprised. Go out and find Echos > somewhere! It's somewhat different (a tad more mainstream), but very good I agree; I've heard exerpts of it, which is why I was trying to find it. Well, I found it, and it was pretty easy. I just dialed up cduniverse.com. I hadn't tried them before, but to my surprise, they had it in stock, and for only $10.95! I'm looking forward to hearing it in its entirety. Just thought I'd pass that on. TC, Chuck ------------------------------ Subject: King Doofus From: "Dawayne Bailey" Date: Tue, 20 Jan 1998 10:48:41 PST Before I explain how I earned my title of King Doofus, I just wanted to say hi back to Chris Staunton. I can't remember the venue we played in Pittsburgh in '92, but if there were trailers for dressing rooms, it might have been an "in-the-round" show. What a small world, huh? Brian Runkle, are you still out there somewhere? Please contact me at your convenience. Thanks. Who is Jerome Preston and what is available, audio and video-wise? My King Doofus status was earned on many occasions in life but one was in 1987 or '88 when Chicago and I were playing a concert in Atlanta with a night off there as well. The road manager asked if anyone wanted to go see Madonna at the Omni on the night off. I was not a Material girl fan and could have cared less, plus I savored those nights off. The next day, on the way to our show I asked how the Madonna show went. They got to meet her and her opening act. I then asked our singer, Bill Champlin, "Did Madonna suck?" His reply was "She wasn't really my cup of tea, but Level 42 was great!" What an idiot I was. It equals the time when our British drum tech who had also worked with Level 42, opened his briefcase at the airport in 1994 to give me a copy of a Nik Kershaw DAT tape that Peter Wolf produced. Peter had just produced the new Chicago record and I'm also a huge Nik fan. As he opened the case, I saw a few rows of Level 42 board tapes on DAT. Not wanting to appear greedy, I figured I'd ask him for a copy of those later. Our tour ended and I haven't seen him since, but I'll find him! Pseudo Echo is now signing with a US label to make a > comeback. They may do it under a new name though...... Hopefully they'll do it with something better than that horrible remake of Funkytown they did a few years back. Actually, I think I've only heard one other song of theirs, I think it was "To The Shore" and I really liked it. > I'll tell you what, that Mark KIng can play a mean bass and he has > good fun during the concert as well. Well yes he does have fun during this video, but I found it interesting that he doesn't appear to be having nearly as much fun in the later concerts I've seen (Guaranteed Live, the live shots during Fait Accompli, and the home-video shot at their last performance). He seems to be just playing during these shows, and not enjoying it as much as during LAW. That and the chewing gum during the Guaranteed Live video is a bit distracting :) > 3 albums i have just bought are ....... 100 degrees and rising > ...incognito Great album. Okay, they're all great albums. I'd say that over the past few months, Incognito has been catching up to Level 42 as far as being my favorite group. I still prefer Level 42, but I've found myself listening to Incognito much more often lately (particularly Beneath the Surface, Positivity and 100 deg...). You might also check out Jazz/Funk if you like The Early Tapes. Has anyone heard Maysa Leak's album yet? I keep hearing one of her songs on the local "adult-jazz" station and I really like it. I've been unable to find the album locally though and will probably check out cdnow... > Has anyone noticed the eerie resemblance between the Titanic > soundtrack and Wally Badarou's "Words of a Mountain" Similar > instruments and chord structures. Hmm, I just saw the movie last night (finally) and didn't notice any similarities but then, I wasn't focusing so strongly on the music. Words of a Mountain is fantastic though. I keep meaning to pick up some of his other albums... > "There is a Dog"? I have never heard of this L42 song. On which album > is it located?? Mark King's solo album. Excellent, excellent jamming hard-fusion-jazz tune. Definitely pick up this album. This tune, and The Essential (an almost 19-minute piece) are awesome tunes. I could live without the Cream remake (and generally skip it) though. Speaking about sequences, who controls the tempos/drum>machines? I think Phil should do it- being the drummer, but also I tend >to think Mike should do it with all the sequences he's got happening. >Anyone know of any Level Drum "tabs"? Phil was on the january 1988 cover of Modern Drummer. There he told that he was indeed controlling a drummachine (Linn). I think he used it only on the track World Machine. The rest of the sequences were controlled by Mike. A very intresting cover story with groove patterns of: Good man in a Storm, Lying Still, Lessons in Love and Children Say. Phil says about Hot Water: quote "When i play left-hand lead on the hi-hat, it is usually something straight: 8ths or 16ths. When I play with the right hand across, it's usually because i am looking for certain effects. For instance, in Hot Water I do a pattern that involves playing groups of three 16th notes, but the symbals are open on the middle note of each group. I can't get the same effect with the left hand so i cross over. Wether I, am playing on the hi-hat with sticks or not, I nearly always have my foot moving on the pedal. This gives a metronomical effect, and it also keeps the cymbals opening and closing slightly" unquote Well, check out this hi-hat part of Hot Water, it quite something. Phil is my fav. drummer because of his 'groove' I think his hi-hat technique is really what does it. Check out for example: leaving my now. Phil's best drumming can be heard on the Radio Dronten/Holland concert of 1981. I was always very intrested in Phil because I was a drummer at that time. I learned my drumteacher how to play Heathrow ! Well, than i changed to bass and stepped into another world ! See ya ! Erik Terheggen ------------------------------ Subject: But wait there's more... From: "phillip bolden" Date: Tue, 20 Jan 1998 13:48:15 PST Their video Fait Accompli was released here in the US only a few years ago. It has some concert footage and some informative interviews as well as actual videos(some of which are on Level Best video), but if you don't have the Level Best video yet hesitate no further. Most national music stores and the better regional chains should have it on the shelf. It (just like the album Level Best) goes from 1981 live on BBC to 1989-90 Starring At The Sun plus an extra video for the single Take Care of Yourself(hillarious video). I personally have never seen them live and unfortunately never will apparently, but those vidoes help to cure those blues. My goal now is to get some more of the BBC footage and anything from Guaranteed and Forever Now. By the way if haven't heard those two yet put those on your list they're pretty powerful platters. 42.When dangling, watch your participles. Reddick" Date: Wed, 21 Jan 1998 00:41:17 -0400 (EDT) One of the things I love about the boys is that there's so many different versions of their songs. Personally, I never listened to Tracie very closely, until I got the Connoisseur Collection--the remix of that song kicks ass! Likewise with the Spectrum compliation: there's the instrumental of Coup d'Etat, which I like tons better than the vocal version... To Charl--sorry 'bout not returning that mail to you back when... Harvard has a really bizarre system of starting finals period BEFORE Christmas, and continuing after New Year's. So it's just recently that I've been able to sift through e-mails. I wouldn't have been much use to you anyway; I'm a complete neophyte on the topic. Just download a few, shut off the other instruments, and learned the bass parts that way... It's great to see new faces (!?!) on the Digest, welcome all! Here's my list of not-so-great L42 tracks, album-by-album... WM: Dream Crazy RITF: It's Over--I don't dislike the song, I usually just skip it. SATS: Silence The Remixes: Lessons In Love remix (yawn!) Remix Collection: Hot Water (but the military rap-jody in the middle is cool!) Guaranteed: The Ape FN (RCA): Model Friend (again, not bad; I just skip it) FN (Resurgence): Time Will Heal & Past Lives (ugh!) The earlier CDs I have I don't listen to enough to really comment on. I am unabashedly a greater fan of the "poppier" 42 stuff. Hey, I'd like to hear more about what led to the departure of the Goulds from the band in '87. Boon had a breakdown (right?), and Phil said he was tired of touring. Is that the real story? People have alluded to friction between Mark and Phil--I even remember someone saying that "Don't Bother Me" is directed at Mark. Is this all true? If so, why? Also Jeff--you are spot on with giving Radiohead props for "OK Computer." It is brilliant, and I even can draw a slight parallel to Paranoid Android and Man--the song going through very different sections and such. Peace kids--let's chat! Rich Richard J. Reddick, Ed.M.
