From: Andy Smith Date: Mon, 25 May 1998 11:19:40 +0100 Hi there friends! Yep, it happened - the main man actually turned up, I still remain speechless!! Lots of pictures to follow. All I want to say at this time " THANKYOU ERIC FOR STARTING THIS WHOLE DIGEST THING OFF. TONY SHARPE, WITHOUT YOU MY MAN - GOODNESS KNOWS!" An extremely big apology to follow - I'm the idiot who picked up the cassette tape 'The Level42 Connection Collection'. Whoever owns this, please email me personally and I will imediately dispatch it to you. Best wishes go the the attendees of the other fests - hope y'all had a great time! A very big please to follow - whoever owns the live recording of 'Love Games' that use horns throughout, please, please can I have a copy. L43 are looking at doing this at our next rehearsal - it would be absolutely fantastic to do this version. I will pay any expense involved. There is so much rare stuff that I heard at the ILF that I would like to have, but this version of LG is the most important. This was just meant to be a quickie!! I'm gone. I love you guys!!! Andy. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: ILF, MIDI files & MP3's! From: "Charl Mocke" <9413693 @ narga.sun.ac.za> Organization: Stellenbosch University Date: Mon, 25 May 1998 12:50:31 +0200 Hi there everyone, Re: ILF '98 > full report will be forthcoming, but the major news is the fact that > MARK SHOWED UP!!! He came to Jo's with Ria and his newest child, Marlee SERIOUS!! #@%$^*%#&!! Next year I'm THERE. This must have been SO cool, you guys 'n' gals are SO lucky! I WANT PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and a FULL report!!!!!!! :) :) Re: MIDI files Apologies to all that requested my newest MIDI file (LIAPW), you'll have to wait a while longer. Frankly I didn't spent much time this weekend to correct some nasty Pitch Bend errors in the file, rather I went out and drank all my sorrow away out of pity for not being able to attend the ILF' 98. I'm getting some other MIDI writers to help me with the problem, but once it is fixed, you'll get the file. Promise! And personally i think it is quite a piece of work, I spend DAYS writing it. Re: MP3's I see that there is quite a bit of talk about the legalness of MP3's. I would just like to say that it is the ONLY means and hope some people in forgotten, isolated countries have of ever getting some L42 stuff they can't find nationally. I live in South Africa and there is just about _NO_ L42 stuff here available except some compilation albums. I am sure that is the case too in many other countries. Importing is too risky and expensive. Also, the files don't necessarily have to be put up on a web site. They can be mailed to whoever wants them. ARJ, for example, can split up a file in whatever increments you want (so mail servers can handle the size) and attached to an ordinary mail message. For example, a 3 MB MP3 file can be split up in 6 500k parts and mailed as 6 seperate message attachments, no mess, no fuss, no shocking phone bills. Next, and last, after hearing all of the albums and watching most of the concerts, I've finally decided what my 15 fav. songs are: 15: As Years Go By 14: Good Man in a Storm 13: Hot Water (GL version) 12: You Can't Blame Louis 11: Billy's Gone (Resurgence Version) 10: You can't blame Louis 9: Running in the Family 8: Somthing About You 7: Two Solitudes 6: World Machine 5: The Chinese Way (GL version) 4: All She Wants 3: The Sundbed Song 2: All Over You 1: Lessons in Love (L.A.W. CD Version) Best Remix: Hot Water from the Remixes Honorable Mention: The Spirit is Free Best Album: Forever Now (RCA, yeah, but AOY, it's the better CD, IMO) Jake ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V98 #134 From: "Andre Huijts" Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 08:09:16 +0200 Re. Huh ? Now I think either you or me are misunderstanding some things. The 20 -bit remastering process has nothing to do with the final resulting CD from it. It only means that the remastering process itself has been done on 20-bit machines, and that there has been extra care regarding the whole mastering process. (I've read very interesting and detailed info regarding this on a JVC (Japan ?) site. Don't have any URL's anymore though). The final CD however _IS_ of course normal 16 bit resolution since you couldn't play it on any regular CD player else. I am not aware of any real 20-bit resolution CDs. You would need a special CD player or as you say some sort of decoder. Anyway the BVCP-7463 can be played on any regular CD player. So the mystery continues....... Alex wrote: >A good question. I'm always on the lookout for his Tin Man album in >hopes that it will answer that question, but can't find it anywhere. I have a catalogue somewhere here of the Resurgence company and there should be a URL too......but where is it ? I'll let you know when I find it. Be aware though: very expensive and Tinman doesn't really sound like Level 42. Some tracks are staring to grow on me now. However if you ever liked Anny's backing on L42 gigs, buy the CD anyway...... Terek wrote: >Just think if Boon was a showman as well as Mark!!! Phew!!!! I think the original line up would have lasted even shorter if there would have been yet another dominant personality in the band.(Besides Mark and Phil) Of course I don't know him personaly but from what I've seen from interviews it seems to me he's a very shy guy. That's the way he played. He never was a "stage animal" and I liked him that way. It wouldn't have fit with the band, nor the kind of music they played. Subtle is the keyword to Boon's playing, simple but effective. If you'd like to hear some rougher Boon, buy Tinman. >> You really don't understand Level 42 if you don't >> dig this song....you must hate the really old stuff too then. > >Here is more absurd writing...Brian, I too *hate* "The Sunbed Song". ???? But what clearer reference to "the old days" then The Sunbed Song do you need ? Maybe I got carried away, but I really don't understand why one would like the "old stuff" and hate The Sunbed Song. > And > for the record all I like of Level 42 is the old stuff, I believe the heavilt >tapered off after the release/semi-success of _World Machine_. >Understanding??? Well, we can't discuss taste can we, but sometimes I feel it's very popular to say "I only like the old stuff". I personaly like almost everything L42 ever did, with SATS and Guaranteed being the "least favorite" albums. Whatever way you look at it, it takes guts to change a bands sound on every album, and I personaly think we should credit Mark for that, even if he did try to make it sound more "commercial" (whatever that means). The quality never disappeared. Tell me how many bands can take a decision like: I want to sell more albums/have more/bigger hits and actualy do it, and do it with quality songs like SAY and the RITF hits ?? It probably would have been much easier to make albums that sounded just like the one before. For me SATS was a real shock when I had blindly bought it. I felt (and still feel) the L42 sound had disappeared, but wouldn't it have been much easier to make a "RITF part II" like album ?? Now that's one of the things I respect from Mark, innovate, don't repeat. No album was like the one before. That's why the band left Polydor. Polydor wanted an album "just like the one before" because it sold so well.....Mark said these (or simular) words in some interviews. This makes waiting for the new solo album so hard !! "What's he done this time ???" And about the "commercial" thing: Love Games, The Sun Goes Down, Micro Kid, Hot Water or The Chinese way were all "old stuff", yet they were either hits or sounded pretty commercial too. Groetjes, Andre ------------------------------ Subject: UNBELIEVABLE From: Bill Leslie-Miller Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 09:06:14 +0000 Levelheads It's now Tuesday morning....and I still can't believe I met and talked to Mark King himself !!!! It's still surreal.....and there was me being totally sceptical about him turning up..I have totally eaten my words !!!, I was totally flabbergasted that Mark would show up to see 35 Level 42 nuts....and he is SUCH a nice guy !! Can't wait to see all mine and the other digesters photos come out....... Firstly my sincere apologies to all the people I didn't introduce myself to, this was rude I know but as my fiancee had sat in JoeDaFlo's for 3 odd hours, drunk about 25 cappuccino's and thought I was a complete saddo I thought I'd better not get lost in Level 42 speak as I wouldn't have spoken to her for a few hours... Secondly...Lolita you are a star, without all this...well....let's face it, it just wouldn't have happened...thank you very much, it is a dream come true for me.... Thirdly Mark's album is being released in September through Eagle Rock, he did say he originally had trouble getting a deal....but everything is ok now..The album was co written with Boon Gould and will be called 'BARKING MOON' (very clever...rearrange the first letters of each word and what have you got...?? yes MARK KING BOON !!!!) he did mention some of the track names but I can't remember them, some of the other digesters have the complete video of Mark's appearance so they will know ! Fourthly, I asked Mark what Mike was doing with himself and he said that he saw Mike a couple of weeks ago and said he was 'writing' at the moment...so a new Mike Lindup album could be forthcoming.. Fifthly Adam and Tony....wonderful to meet you both at long last..hope we can meet again in the future..oh yes and Adam you never did buy me that drink... Sixthly...JoDaFlo's is a pretty cool place..... Seventhly....Mark did say he would play the bass with Level43...so maybe next year we will play...no not maybe!!!...definately... Eighthly....thanks to Paul Hammond for showing me Mark King's house, next year Paul rather than driving up 50 yards, we'll go up to the front door !!!!!!!!! hee hee !! Ninethly...thanks to everybody else who made this possible... Tenthly....Let's do this again next year STILL SHAKING Bill Miller ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V98 #136 From: Andrew Goodwin Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 09:46:59 +0100 > Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V98 #135 > From: Andrew Goodwin > Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 12:40:18 +0100 > > <<< No Message Collected >>> Does this mean I bodged, or was censored? Not surprising I suppose - all you missed was a mild attack on Alan Murphy, and a savage rant about London, which was both off topic and moderately offensive to approximately 8 million people. Oh well. AG
