I hope Greg doesn't mind! Greg Jamate wrote: > > I'd like to clear something up about MP3's. I don't know where > Adam got the idea that I'm into them. I don't know where Adam got that idea either, and I'm sorry for taking up your time. I was acting on his suggestion that I drop you a line, I should have realized that your name didn't show up on my list of MP3 enthusiasts! And that is, after all, what he and I (and a few others) are, enthusiasts. When I found out about MP3's, I got excited about them, and immediately downloaded all the resources for making/listening to them. I use them as a tool to "try before I buy", and I do buy (way too many, hundreds in fact) CD's. I encourage others to do the same as well. I have not yet uploaded, distributed or otherwise released from my possession any MP3's yet, though I have some that I made for myself that I will share if asked. > I am concerned though that this is at all legal. From Chris Barua's > post today I gather there is some organization shutting down > web sites with MP3 files of commercial recordings. Please be > careful guys. Are they illegal? Yes. Then why aren't the encoders? If the RIAA had wanted to crack down on the distribution of MP3's, they should have targeted the software people making the encoding software. It boggles the mind to think that any government agency would be insane enough to try to track down and punish all the end users of a standard whose developers they have completely ignored. I mean, which is easier to find? As a Music Business major I am all too aware of the implications of copyright and publishing rights protection, but folks, we have not been dealt with fairly. 4,000% markup on CD's. Confusing and ultimately self destructive internet music initiatives. The removal from print of many classic CD's in all genres due to political reasons. Planned obsolescence of bands who refuse to play by the industry's rules and "adjust" their music, members or sponsorships to become more marketable. When I started college I swore I would try to have a good influence on those around me in my future music career, by the time I graduated I swore I would never even work in the industry. Am I just a disillusioned crackpot? Probably, but I'll tell you this, I never had a defining "bad" experience that skewed my perceptions this way. My beliefs are the result of eight years of dealing with the industry from the perspectives of being a performing and recording musician, being in concert technical/production roles, and dabbling in the sales and marketing of music for fun. It is not a pleasant arena, and while I'm not unilaterally condemning people who work in it, I am expressing my frustration over the increasing amounts of unfair treatment and hypocrisy received by informed listeners and fans such as myself. All of this is not an attempt to justify the wide-spread electronic distribution of copyrighted music (or any kind of tangible media). I happen to believe very strongly that this is wrong, and have actually decided not to use an FTP site which was offered to us for these MP3's for this reason! However, until a dark suited man shows up at my door to question me about my musical activities I will continue to share with my friends any music I have that I'm convinced they either cannot get, or cannot afford due to bloated import pricing. I am in that boat too, and it's no fun. All this having been said, I will get with interested parties on an individual basis about the couple of rare tracks which have been discussed. Thanks for your time! Chris Staunton - The views expressed above are mine, all mine! Any attempt to apply them to anyone else or the digest in general will be met with severe taunting! ***ENORMOUSLY LONG NON-TOPIC RANT ENDS*** ------------------------------ Subject: Magazine features, synth guitar From: "Jamate, Greg" Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 13:56:00 -0400 Hi Levelheads, Bill, I've tried sending you private email about this but they keep coming back with undeliverable messages. You wrote: > Apparently there is set to be a huge feature on Mark King and his > forthcoming release in the July Edition of Bass Player magazine... Are you sure you do not mean Bassist magazine, the English publication? Bass Player, the American magazine has no feature on Mark in July's issue and is planning to feature Jeff Ament next month. There were posts about Bassist hinting at a Mark King feature here recently. For those interested, BP's July edition has comparisons of inexpensive four string basses. Winston - lots of laughs on how to identify a New Yorker. Jon - good follow up on the Boon opinions. I never realized the heavy chords in 'Running In The Family' were done by Mike on keyboards. Now that I think about it they do sound artificial. I am sure someone here versed in Level 42's history can offer reason as to why Boon wasn't playing on this. take care, Greg ------------------------------ Subject: LIve at Pompeii From: "Chris Safsten" Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 14:52:39 -0700 I was seaching http://www.borders.com on Level 42 and the music video Live at Pompeii came up.
