Just catching up with all the mail and digest stuff, as I had to shoot over to Italy on business (lucky so and so!) Now I am full up with pasta, I can comment on stuff:- >A quick question, does anyone out there know if "My Hero" from True >Colours was about anyone in particular ? Was it John Lennon ? Hi Adrian, no, it was definately Hendrix (heard MK in an interview). "......playing black rock symphonies" would also seem to confirm that. Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 13:42:27 +0100 Hello friends, My Father Shoes is the one L42 song I don't like.... (pants! was a negative description, pants=underpants) Terek - You like it? seriously? I can't beleive they actually released it here as a single. "The first ever novelty L42 release" DonZ - save me a set of pins, I'll settle with you @ the ILF Pat - Have you just watched a Simpsons 24hr vidoeathon! WOO-HOO Adam P.S. I should have uploaded the Tired of Waiting MP3 by the time you read this. http://www.geocities.com/sunsetstrip/backstage/3883/mp3.html (If you haven't heard All Over You and Tired Of Waiting) ------------------------------ Subject: Fw: Friends TV show From: "Chip" Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 11:07:29 -0600 Hello All, I was a subscriber a few years ago and recently moved and picked up the list again. Glad to see there are still a good amount of Levelheads around.. Anyway... With all the reissues of songs because they were in a commercial, movie or TV show, wouldn't you just LOOOOOOVVE to see "Silence" used in the tv show FRIENDS at the season's end to sort of sum up the Ross/Rachael thing??? I mean the lyrics fit so well and it would expose tons of people to the band. Come on Warner Brothers, do it do it do it! Chip djell @ lakemac.net ------------------------------ Subject: Questions, questions, questions From: "janet.morgan" Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 02:35:56 -0700 Well,,,,,,,, I certainly opened up a can of worms asking about MK's scar! What fun! And being the impish little snot that I am, I think I'll do it again... So, now tell me where the name "Level 42" came from. I've heard 3 versions: 1) from "Hitchhikers to the Galaxy" - the machine that answers everything mathematically, and when asked about the meaning of life, the answer is "42". 2) Mark and Boon (?) went to New York, went on the subway, and landed at 42nd street. and 3) Mark and whoever were in New York on the subway, and saw a sign saying "Level 42" - alluding to 42nd street. Any other versions? Just a quick word about the NBA - congrats to Larry the Bird for winning "Coach of the Year". And I hope anyone but the Bulls win in the finals. My Phoenix Suns could have whipped some %#@$$ if they didn't suck so badly. Oh well, there's alway next year. Plus, we've still got the Cardinals, the Diamondbacks and the Coyotes (I'm getting depressed.....) Re Seinfeld's bass line - we'll be hearing it till the next full century due to syndication! We'll need to have MK offer up a version. The bass line for "Law & Order" isn't bad, but sadly isn't up to MK caliber. Now that would kick booty! Bye all, and again, have fun at the Levelfests. Someone please have a beer for me! And take lots of pics! While Frank certainly deserves the all the memoria he's getting, I have to say that I don't consider him to be THE greatest singer who ever lived. My vote for that would go to Nat King Cole - better voice, better style. If he had lived longer, and if the color of his skin hadn't carried the political stigma it does in this country, I think he might have been considered THE greatest. I'm content to call them the TWO greatest singers who ever lived! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Okay, top 10 studio albums - a fresh look: 1. Forever Now (Resurgence - it's important to differentiate) 2. World Machine 3. Guaranteed 4. Running in the Family 5. Level 42 6. Staring at the Sun 7. The Pursuit of Accidents 8. True Colours 9. The Early Tapes 10. For all of you Dutch digesters a question about this. Has Level 42 ever been on this show? If so, it could be worth while to watch the quiz. It's on every saturday night at around 22.15hrs. From: "Shannon Gallegos" Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 15:08:11 -0700 BUDGETFEST 1998 Here's the plan. If you are gonna be in the Southern California/Orange County/Fullerton area on May 23rd - join us! The day's itinerary goes something like this...... After 2 p.m., the fun begins. We start off with a BBQ listening/viewing gathering in Shannon's lovely outdoor patio (there will be an alternative El Nino plan, if needed) After, we walk to hear an incredible blues band at a great little pub. If that isn't enough - we depart for a blast from the past - we spend a little time in this fabulous arcade that features all games and music from the 80's. After speaking with the owner - he assures me that if we bring him Level 42 tapes - he'll play them for us! All this within walking distance. What a bargain!!! Please RSVP by May 21, so we can get directions to you. And remember - the Intl. Levelfest t's will be available as well. Hope to see you there! It definitely is hard to decide on just one album that is my favorite. This is the order I would put them in. 1. Level 42 2. World Machine 3. Running in the Family 4. The Early Tapes 5. Pursuit of Accidents 6. True Colours 7. Standing in the Light 8. Staring at the Sun 9. Guaranteed 10. Forever Now I saw the Running in the Family tour in Germany and the Staring at the Sun tour in Luxembourg and even though Alan Murphy and Gary Husband are both excellent musicians, I will always be true to the original line up. I'm so glad I have found this digest. I found out about the ILF too late for this year, definitely next year. Well, that was my 1/2 cent worth. Lee'Ann Have fun at ILF, I'm jealous. ------------------------------ Subject: Forty-Two Flambe From: jcvaeth @ juno.com (john c vaeth) Date: Sun, 17 May 1998 01:08:43 EDT Hello fans. I, like a couple of other lone souls must speak up in defense of Forever Now (both versions). To everyone who expects Level 42 to fit into their "vision" of the band I say PHOOEY! And what's all this screeching and squealing about "Don't Bother Me"? Are you waiting for them to redo "Something About You" (or if that is too SLICK for you, "Turn it On") or what is your deal? J. Arnold said something very very right on the Digest yesterday, and it bears a repeat today, just in case any of you have missed it or it hasn't sunk in yet: "This isn't a flame but with the demise of L42 shouldn't every existing track and new discovery be rare and somewhat precious?" You should have seen my face when I first got Forever Now (in '95). I was like a little kid. AND what is up with this flaming of "The Bends"???!?!??! This is a classic and I think it very strange that any Level 42 fan would diss it. My rant has finished. Thank you if you've read this far! John P.S. The "doodoodoos" in One In a Million are just so gorgeous! Please, no flames as to how I think Level 42's doo-doo is brilliant! ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V98 #129 From: tereknbobbie @ webtv.net (Terek Richie) Date: Sun, 17 May 1998 04:26:05 -0400 Hello everyone!! I don't know Bo. Sinatra was one of those "legends" who, in my book, weren't necessarily so legendary. Many singers have popular status and don't have that much to do with the songs that make them giants, other than singing them. A man has passed, and that's sad. Though he had a voice, I never could think of him as this Godsend. I think he was just a vessel. Mariah is a vessel. Whitney is a vessel. Celine is a vessel. They're all great voices, but just that. Music is music. And people love it for different reasons. But the greatest of musicians (I feel) are innovators. Visionaries musically and/or lyrically, not those who have a great voice but sing umpteen songs written by a team of others. L42 had more substance than half of these "legends" will ever know. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't take this as a Frank Sinatra bashing party!!!!!!!! All that aside, how many dues did he really have to pay as an artist, especially if he was tied in with the mafia. HHHHHHMMMMMMMMM!!??????? I've been known to take music too seriously at times. Maybe I'm just looking at it from a musician/aspiring songwriters standpoint and not just a music lover's standpoint. T. P.S. all of you Frank Sinatra fans, I'm sorry if I've upset you with all of this. I don't mean to make waves.
