I just saw Titanic yesterday -- great film (in my opinion -- although my fiance was neutral about it). Anyways, I didn't make the connection to Wally B. right away (alot of it sounded like Enya), but I *did* liken it to the soundtrack from The Abyss, which if memory serves, was also directed by James Cameron. And a few years back at college, I was playing WOAM and someone said "hey, is that the soundtrack from Abyss?" So, in short, yes - I agree! And re: Wally's albums, those of you who've heard WOAM but not his first CD "Echos" will be pleasantly surprised. Go out and find Echos somewhere! It's somewhat different (a tad more mainstream), but very good & creative. Definitely what I'd call new age (i.e., Vangelis, Kitaro, David Arkenstone, etc.), with very little genre overlap with Level 42. BTW - Charl, "There Is A Dog" is that last track on Mark's solo album "Influences". Very jazz/fusion. -Eric -- Eric J. To cut songs shorter like "SAY", "It's Over", >"HIMH", "Children Say", "LMN", etc. is sacrilege. But I suppose it >has its merits considering they wanted to put at much as possible >hits on one CD. (18 tracks is a lot.) This is my biggest gripe about the Level Best album. My brother is the same way--one of his favorite songs is "It's Over." The Level Best version has a harmonica in the background, and since he first heard the version that appears on Running in the Family, he hates it. I can stand to listen to it, but I also prefer the version on Running in the Family over the Level Best version. The other thing that really bugs me is the into to "Something About You," which is shortened. "Something About You" is my absolute most favorite song by Level 42, and I was very disappointed when I heard it on Level Best. Just thought I'd jump on the bandwagon. >Talking of least favourite songs, I'd like to start a thread (it was >probably here before)... which is your least favourite track on every >album? Mine: (compilation albums excluded) > > World Machine - It's Not The Same For Us > Running in the Family - Fasion Fever > Guaranteed - The Ape > Forever Now - Billy's Gone I would have to say that on World Machine, I have no least favorite song, I like 'em all! Same for Running in the Family. I would agree with you on Guaranteed, I find "The Ape" to be very monotonous and boring. (I can hear the flame-throwers starting now....) On Forever Now, my least favorite would have to be either "Heart On The Line," or "Time Will Heal." >Subject: More romance I'm afraid !!! >From: Tom Brown >Date: Mon, 19 Jan 1998 10:38:51 +0000 > >Hi all ! > >Not to be out done at all, I thought I'd share a little something with you. I >too am to be married this year and all the proposing and stuff went off over >the New Year !!! With everyone sharing their romantic personal lives, I thought I'd add my own story (although it isn't exactly romantic:) Just before Christmas my wife and I were driving home from the in-laws, and my 2 month old baby was in the car seat, crying. We were trying to sooth her, but nothing seemed to be working. We were listening to Running in the Family, and just then "Sleepwalkers" started playing. My daughter immediately stopped crying, and she hardly let out a peep while the song was playing. =) I think she may become a Levelhead like her father. Mine: (compilation albums excluded) > > World Machine - It's Not The Same For Us > Running in the Family - Fasion Fever > Guaranteed - The Ape > Forever Now - Billy's Gone Geesh, it was hard enough deciding which songs were my "favorites" for the survey! I don't really have a "least favorite" Level 42 song, as I think everything they've ever done is pretty good. I will comment on these selections, though: INTSFU is actually one of my favorites from WM, a different twist on the anti-war song. FF I'm pretty neutral about. I always liked the groove of "The Ape" but would've hoped for a little more effort on the lyrics. BG is a good song, but I can't decide which of the two versions is better: the Resurgence version has improved lyrics, but the RCA has a better structural arrangement, no? Hey, it's snowing in Raleigh NC today - unusual here. Up to three inches already, and I'm happily snowbound! - Z. ------------------------------ Subject: Dawayne Bailey? Bass Player Magazine... Huh? I haven't been paying much attention lately (my email has been kaplooey for some time) but I was not aware that Dawayne was on this group. Or rather, probably has been for some time. I was racking my brain as to why that name was so familiar (even though I knew Dawayne was with Chicago for a while) when I realized what it was. I have one of his guitar picks! I was setting up a show in Pittsburgh back in '92, and in one of the trailers we were packing out I found two "Chicago" picks, one with Dawayne's name on it. I thought that was pretty cool, being somewhat of a collector of misc. "stuff," but had forgotten about it till I read the above post. Anyway, hi Dawayne! ***END DIVERGENCE FROM L42 TOPIC!*** In the Level 42 vein, I would like to register my plea for a CD copy of the British "World Machine" release. I was disappointed with the one I got over here in the U.S.; it had 2 songs from older albums (Hot Water & TCHB) I already had, and was missing I Sleep On My Heart, Dream Crazy, and Coup D'etat!!! Damn. Also, is there any other way to get Tired of Waiting or All Over You since they're not on the American Forever Now? Re: Jerome Preston Great to see other digestmembers know this guy. During the solo I have on video he is really slamming the bass with two hands at time at the peak of the solo, very rapidly. Great fun. Re: Tracie Well.......I didn't really have to hear both versions again to make a decision, (but still I did). I prefer the single version. It just has that bit more power to it. It's not only due to the higher tempo, it's also Mark's singing wich is just more energetic and "engaged" (is that the word ?) on the single version. The album version just seems to mumble along..... Check out the part where he sings "countin' by the street lights to the phone box" on both versions and you'll notice. I agree with "Mighty" Bram that the extended version is the best of the three, reasons already explained by Bram. Duke Mock wrote: >I also think the video is one of the brighter clips L42 has put out. (Get >a look at that vest Mark's wearing.) It's interesting without the sensory >overload of "Heaven in my hands" Can't agree more:The video is great fun. Just because the guys are very relaxed and "themselves" which is in great contrast to the HIMH (God what a great video this song deserved, and what a louzy one it got) and Take A Look videos. There's a lot of humor in this video as well. Look at Alan's wondered face when Gary is banging the shit out of his hi-hats during the intro, while this isn't in the song at all....... And of course the "obvious" MK jokes. >BTW: What about that "Take Care Of Yourself" spot? Gary as Big Ben? Mark >as a punker? And the whole band as the Four Tops? I love that video for it's humor, and the way it very closely relates to the song. This is what really hate about the HIMH video. It just doesn't say anything about the song, it doesn't even "add" something. Talking about tempo differences: Hasn't anyone noticed the big difference between the "On the Level" and the (original ?) album versions of "Standing In The Light" ? Besides the different lyrics (strangely the "On the Level" lyrics are printed in the SITL album booklet) the tempo on the "On the Level" CD is much higher. It seems to me that the tempo was increased when mastering, because Mark's voice sounds a bit unnatural high to me. Almost like a Smurf ;) ! All instruments seem to sound higher pitched too, but I may be wrong. Maybe some musicians with an "ear" for exact tones can say something about this. I never knew about this A Cappella thing, and I am _VERY_ curious about it ! I wonder how Phil and Boon sound ! Another gem waiting for us, due to the efforts of the Level 42 digest members ! Congrats ! By the way, I think we should all thank Peter Ruechel as well, since he is very willing to listen to, and react on questions of us. It is very rare that people at TV/Radio stations are _so_ open to viewers/listeners questions, and always responding promptly and very fast too. I have send a couple of mails to him, and he never forgot to answer one. That's great. And now he is fulfilling another request by "us". Fantastic ! I've tried sending e-mails to Dutch stations (Veronica, AVRO) of which I know they have Level 42 material in their archives (AVRO made a "real" videoclip for the Love Games single at the time, much more interesting than the TOTP shooting that made it to the Level Best video, Veronica has A LOT Level material) but you are lucky when you even get an answer (which is mostly negative, of course).
