From: JDoody @ checkpoint.co.uk Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 11:55:07 GMT To: level42 @ worldmachine.com I've been sitting here for the last few days reading your humble opinions on which songs should be dropped. I can take it no more! Forever Now, is such a bloody stonkingly brilliant album, that IMHO, no songs should be dropped. In fact it should be made a double CD with the second CD being exactly the same as the first. The album exudes class, style, professionalism, beauty and poetry. It is uplifting as well as thought provoking. It is mellow as well as pure FUNK! IMHO in which my opinion is as humble as the next man\woman, they could not have left us with a finer album. Leave the album alone!!!!!!!!!......................apart from "Don't Bother Me" which is crap. FREEDOM FOR CORN NIBBLETS! Love Jon ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Digest Readers' Level 42 Top 10 From: Andrew Goodwin Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 12:16:55 +0100 As a relative newcomer to the digest it may well be that this has been done before, but I'm wondering whether there has ever been a survey of digest members to see what emerges as the favourite L42 album. The reason I am curious is that in many of the postings one can detect an undercurrent of disappointment with Forever Now, and approbation for Guaranteed, both of which are diametric opposites to my personal reaction to said albums. I'd be interested to know what the concensus of digest members is. If people would like to e-mail me their personal Top 10s privately (or to the digest) I'll happily collate the results and let you all know the outcome. If it's been done before, what was the result? Just to start the ball rolling (and make myself even less popular than I already am round these parts): 1 Level 42 2 Standing in the Light 3 Early Tapes 4 Forever Now 5 Pursuit of Accidents 6 World Machine 7 Running in the Family 8 Staring at the Sun 9 True Colours 10 Guaranteed To make a nice user-friendly 10 I've left off the live albums or different issues of various titles. I know that makes it hard for some people who would put the RCA FN lower than the Resurgence FN, but it would just get too complicated otherwise. So the ten basic studio albums is it. If people participate, I'll move on to a Top 20 songs - then the fur will REALLY fly! D'OH! Man, I don't know about that. I like the original lineup as much as the next guy, but that's a great album. >I vote for replacing....My Fathers Shoes. > >This song, in my opinion, is pants!! D'OH! I think that's my second favorite song on the album (next to Seven Years). >(I agree with Pat, can we remove "Fashion Fever" also?) D'OH! That's a great song (I think the main reason I like it is because it's a fun bassline to play). ____________________ PFPD -- newmedia marketing consulting a limited liability company PO Box 281, Granger, IN 46530-0281 v:616.663.2250 -- competitive business advantages through creative technology ------------------------------ Subject: Chairman of the Board From: "Bowman, Brian J. (McConnell AFB)" Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 09:42:12 -0500 The following is a non-level post ... I think we would be remiss if we failed to acknowledge the passing of perhaps the greatest singer who ever lived, Frank Sinatra. Anyone who loves music, whether they know it or not, was probably influenced by the style and delivery of a man who embodied the working class American. Even in his seventies, one can hear the clarity and passion of Sinatra in his two "Duets" albums, which introduced the singer to millions of new listeners - like myself - who only vaguely knew his music before then. In a world where the words "great" and "legendary" are so overused (just look at the Seinfeld hype), Sinatra was truly a legend. Thanks for the music. That's the freaky thing about this CD, whatever the strengths or weakness of the individual songs, you can listen to it multiple consecutive times and not get tired of it! This is one of the only non-jazz CD's I can stand to do this with (my roommate, however, will listen to the same 2 or 3 songs over and over all day- bizarre and annoying!). I guess it's a credit to the song pacing and ordering, at least on my Resurgence version. > ...I'd definitely drop Don't Bother Me... (and all similar posts) Hey, I think it's kinda cool in a retro-disco sorta way! I just bop right along to that great little lounge-disco bass line that comprises about 80% of the song. I could, however, deal w/out the off key whistling at the end... :^) > I like hearing the bass, but I'm so sick and tired of hearing the > Seinfeld funky bass theme that I could puke. This a general mail to everyone on this thread. My question is this. Why remove any tracks? Why not just add the demo's and "almost ran's" from the vaults (like Polydor should be doing any time soon God bless 'em!) This isn't a flame but with the demise of L42 wouldn't every existing track and new discoveries be rare and somewhat precious? BTW AYGB is PHAT! Cheers, Jules. P.S. A favorite insult of my father's, it means that the person being insulted has no aritstic or aesthetic "taste", rather only the sense of taste in one's mouth. Cute, huh? * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: While writing this post, FedEx came to my door with the pins! The Level 42 Digest 5th Anniversary pins are here, and they look great!!! I will be bringing about 50 of them to the ILF, so everyone there can get two. I thought 'singing and playing can't >be that bad'. Well, on a bass, it is. It's not too bad when the bass lines are simple like many songs...but not Level 42 stuff! The best way to approach it is to NOT segregate the learning of the bass line from the learning of the vocal line. As painful as it is, try to learn them simultaneously. That way it's not two different, unrelated lines from your brain's perspective. It's a bit like how a drummer learns a rhythm....they don't work on the foot bits and then later work on the hi-hat bits. The groove is a whole; composed of each limb doing a bit of it. Singing and playing funky bass is two parts of the whole funky package. I say all this but I still think Mark has two brains. ------------------------------ Subject: Cars scars 'n the stars From: Bilal42 Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 19:12:08 EDT > On a final note, any song containing the change that occurs after the > line 'and what remains is why you're crying alone' in Romance must not > be cut from any album!! ahh, undeniable! When I hear this song, I always imagine it being performed in a huge theatre on a big stage with a full orchestra in front of thousands of people...imagine... PS. a few words about Mark, scars cars and all that: From what I remember, (not that i am an officianado!!!). The scar was by the dog ('there is a dog' indeed!). The young Mr. King had a crash in a car with his young girlfriend soon after getting his license. (I remember that one because I have had a few bumps myself!!!) Later in his life, his Aston Martin (I think) skidded off the road into a ditch where he found a warning sign in the grass!!! ('Danger Go Slow' or something like that!). I'm not quite sure about this one (it must be in the biography: I think either Mark or Mike had a bit of bad luck in one of Earth Wind and Fire's cars during the recording of SITL. It may have been a Ferrari? (now how many people can say they did that in one of their cars?!!!) I remember reading these stories in the music mags when I was a young boy constantly on the look out for signs that Level42 were going to go on their next tour! Those were the days! A very British message for Level 42: "Oi you lot, COME BACK!!!" I have "mucho" jumbled thoughts so bare with me. What's up Adam? Your J.D. page was cool. "My Father's Shoe" is a beyond great song. Yet another example of L42's many facets. The country swing feel they pulled off nicely. And if ever there was song worthy of comparison to Phil Gould caliber lyrics, it's this one. From A to Z, that's one fine piece of lyric writing. Amen Willoshea. AOY isn't that great of a song but I'm thinking TOW is pretty good though. DonZip, Mike's best song? I'm thinking it's a toss up between "Lasso The Moon" and "Two Solitudes", two songs that are so great I don't know which is better. Not that anyone cares, but here's my list of the not so worthy songs from FN, all versions. 1. "The Bends" (almost weak all the way around) 2. "Heart On The Line" (although it does have it's moments, like the bridge) 3. "Learn To Say No" (also has it's moments, the bridge and pre-chorus Talk to y'all later, T.
