After all, it DID chart in the UK........ So put it on... Many interesting choices for songs to drop (I see Pat still wants to get rid of The Chinese Way... ;) )......... I'd have to disagree on The Sunbed Song. The fact that it segues into Turn It On makes it alright with me. Talk about returning to your roots....Besides, it has a great groove to it. Resurgence has done a great service for us by making the hard to find (in America anyway) b-sides and making them album tracks.... From front to back Pursuit Of Accidents has a thumping, driving groove. The level of bass in the mix is similar to the other early Level 42 recordings, out front and driving the songs. Pat wrote; > Actually, if they had to drop one track, I'd like to see them drop Chinese >Way from Pursuit Of Accidents and replace it with All Over You. :D I guess Chinese Way is one of those songs that people either love or hate. I've been prepped about the silliness of it by reading the digest and by a UK friend who immediately mocked Mark singing it, when I told him I dug L42. Take your mind off the lyrics, and listen to the groove. It moves! Better yet turn your stereo up loud, the louder the better. Good to hear Mark doing a non-slap groove that is infectious. I like the re-mix even more, and I usually despise dance track re-mixes. The Stuart Zender thread, Angel wrote: > To the person who said (or anyone who knows)Jamiroquai's bassist > was in a mag, what issue Stuart Zender was featured in and is it on > the internet? Bass Player mag did a feature on Stuart Zender in May 1997, about four pages long. BP has a good back order policy if you want it. Also, in an interview with Larry Graham in 'Bass Frontiers' he refers to Stuart Zender as a bass player he likes to take funk into the new millenium. Cool ;^) I also wanted to brag that I just learned the bass part in the middle 8 of "World Machine". If anyone has probs wit' it, I'll notate it and send it out (anyone know how to send notation or bass tab.....aside from the post, that is!!) For anyone in Europe and the States, watch out for an Oz band called "The Mavis's" who have just made it big here!! Their first big single has apparently pricked up a few big-name ears, and yours will too....if you love polished-pop tunes, that is. (McConnell AFB)" Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 08:37:30 -0500 Well, it's unfortunately official that I won't be able to make it to the IOL - but reading the email traffic has been fun. Somebody better post some pics on the web ... :-)! FOREVER NOW - This is the album(s) we all seem to agree to disagree on. I believe that, among digest members, it is the most controversial release of the band's career. For my money, Time Will Heal or Heart on the Line would have been cut to make room for All Over You. As for Romance, I have just three words - IT MUST STAY! (Lolita, I should get my t-shirt for being in your corner on this one :-)). Speaking of Three Words (segue), Why is it that this song was not on the Staring at the Sun album? It is so much better than some of the dark, mediocre fare of that release (maybe my least favorite album). ... Plus, why couldn't a song like that (or any song where Mike takes the lead) be released as a single? In the U.S. market of 1988-89, a song like Three Words has "Hit" written all over it. It is much superior than Tracie, which I believe was the A-side release where this song appears. NON-LEVEL STUFF - The two best songs I've heard on hit radio this year are "Anytime" by Brian McKnight and "Brick" by Ben Folds Five. Good stuff! Sometimes good music still has mass appeal. COULDN'T BELIEVE IT - I scratched my copy of Resurgence FN, but found a copy at a Walden Books in Wichita - the only copy of this disc I've ever seen in Wichita. Besides >Time Will Heal, this is my favorite song on the CD. Surely you find >OIAM and Romance better than Sunbed Song and Past Lives? Or better than >Model Friend, Talking In Your Sleep? Sunbed Song is one of the ultimate air-bass songs. Talking In Your Sleep is one of the few songs I can sing along to and not sound like I'm being strangled. Past Lives, I just can't get over the bassline. ____________________ PFPD -- newmedia marketing consulting a limited liability company PO Box 281, Granger, IN 46530-0281 v:616.663.2250 -- competitive business advantages through creative technology ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Oh, No!! I'm not sure what the accomodation situation is in my house at the moment, there's a possibility that I may have a spare room but unfortunately I'm not able to confirm this yet! I know this information is a bit late on, and to be honest I haven't had time to read through all the messages on this list, but I think Eric asked about the location of the ferry port.. For those of you taking the train to Portsmouth, get off at Portsmouth Harbour (not 'Portsmouth & Southsea' which is the main station). The passenger ferry (actually it's a catermeran - if that's how you spell it) leaves from the station itself. There is a walkway down to the ferry reception at the far end of the platform. The ferry leaves every 40mins or so and costs approximately £5 for a return. It's a quite a nice trip when the weathers' nice (and it is at the moment - lets hope it holds out!). If memory serves me right he was attacked by the family dog returning home late one night when he was in his teens. It seems the debate on "which track would you drop from FN" is hotting up. It's funny how many different responses there have been. Even though we all love L42 we still have slightly differing tastes within that same arena. Human nature, weird eh ? AOY is my favorite track on the FN album and DBM is my least favorite, so that would have been an easy choice for me. I mis-typed "the guy" as "the gut" (the T and the Y are next to each other on the keyboard and of course the spelling checker missed it!) when I was talking about the guy who did the Mark King impression on Stars in Their Eyes. My apologies to all. A quick question, does anyone out there know if "My Hero" from True Colours was about anyone in particular ? Was it John Lennon ? Looking forward to the Fest Cheers Ade. "The sap is rising ..." ------------------------------ Subject: Mark singing and bassing From: EMIKATIE Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 16:50:44 EDT Lolita mentioned the ability (or lack of ability) in playing the bass and singing at the same time. I only have a cursory knowledge of "right brain" / "left brain" theory but I'm sure it's got something to do with that. Certain abilities come from different hemispheres of the brain such as motor skills from the left and cognitive skills from the right. That's why it is important to keep up with right side and left side activities. Stroke victims with very developed left and right side brains fare much better in their recovery. I'll check with my wife for more of this tonight and see if she has a theory as to why someone like Mark King is champs at his craft and the rest of us, er, well, me at least, lack the ability. Believe it or not, someone who does a lot of crossword puzzels, Scrabble, math problems, etc and has a well developed and exercised half of the brain, fares much better in old age or after the aforementioned stoke. It's like the half of the brain the stroke zaps can be overcome or at least supplemented with the other half. Without droning on about this, here is an example of an exercise you all can do.... You get dressed in the morning and routinely put on you left sock first or your right leg into your trousers first. You don't think, you just do. You are using one half of your brain. Tomorrow, think about putting on the other sock first or your left leg into the trousers first, (don't trip) and you are using the other half of your brain. Listen to Level 42 music with your ears only and you use one half. Listen and read the lyric book simultaneously and you are using both halves. Don't you all agree this is fascinating stuff ? I'll see if I can get specific about the Mark King et. al. singing/bassing ability. What Mark plays on the bass while he sings is obviously a lot more complex than most other singer/bassists, so I think the best way to learn to play a complex part while singing is to learn the entire song at a much slower tempo, and build up speed to the original tempo gradually. I think that's the best way to develop two skills that complement each other. That sounds a little overly obvious, but it took me years to conclude that the spending the extra time would be worth it. It might not work for everyone, but it works for me most of the time. The other issue is.....trying to get your brain to go in two different directions at the same time. Sometimes that can be learned with enough practice, but not always. It depends on the individual. I think some people are born with certain mental abilities that others might not have, or might have to work at. I can't really prove that though. ~Wayne ------------------------------ Subject: TinTinOut From: John Earl Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 23:08:00 +0100 Hi all, Anyone notice that the strings at the start of "Where the story ends" by TinTinOut are almost exactly like the strings at the start of "Romance" by L42.
