Everyone who ordered one up to this point will receive it most likely by Friday. Once again, all Isle of Wight Levelfesters will receive them the night before the fest in London, or the day of if they are meeting us on the Isle, so you will have to wait. Bill Wilson and Matthew Blackmon, I'm still waiting to hear from you. How many shirts do you need? We'd like to send them out this week so that we don't have to worry about it. Anything that's going out will be going by Friday, because next week I will be preparing to leave and will not want to deal with this. Tomorrow I will post checks that I have received to confirm that for people. He admitted that he had contacted Mark and felt it was best to wait for Mark's cd-release before they featured him on the magazine. I inquired about transcriptions of L42 songs but did not get a clear response, so we'll just have to wait and see. The message that I got was that Bassist prefers to do a cover story based on the new direction that Mark is in after the split of Level 42. Lets hope that they give him the credit he deserves!! The first "dumper" that comes to mind is "talking in your sleep", although I must admit even this track is growing on me. I actually like the high-register Mike-ism in 1iaM, as it demonstrates his fabulous ability to switch from falsetto to, er, non-falsetto so smoothly. Besides, his singing range is quite similar to mine, so it's fun to "play Mike". From: Nick Brazier Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 14:43:51 -0400 Hi there levelheads!! Whilst reading my copy of bass player from a couple of months ago the bass player Jamiroquai (Stuart Zender?? - I bought it as he was on it and I can't even remember his bloody name!) and he mentioned that they both wanted to meet each other, and is desperate to do so..... So when is it going happen - Imagine hearing what them to could play to each other - funkeeyy!! Also, does anyone know who to get hold of the Midge Ure cd Mark was on.....?? not The Gift but a cd from about '89 ?? It's got Kate Bush on the same track if that jogs anyones memory :O ) Wecome To The House Of Usher......??? B-side line from the Forever Now single ? Can't think the song..... It must be hot, I can usually pick any line from any song and get it!!! And..... (god I must be boring you know!!!) Did the Remix of Starchild from that was on the B-side of Take Care Of Yourself ever get released on cd?? On a strage nearly Level 42 ish sort of thing.... Listening to Tori Amos' Boys For Pele cd, Tori yells out "its running in the family!" on the original of Professional Widow - cool eh?? > Does anyone remember the childrens' nature programme which used Pursuit Of Accidens for its title theme?? Its been bugging me for ages! Anyway Take of OY... "Mike Finn", I'd have to agree with what you're saying as far as Mark goes. People tend to not know how difficult it can be to bridge the gaps that Mark did. He kept the bass world on it's toes yet managed to fit everything within the context of "marketable" songs. Not taking anything away from the other greats (Marcus, Stanley, Pattitucci, Manring, Wooten, and Jaco), but I don't think many of them could've done what Mark did, whether it was because they didn't care to or they just couldn't. Also, who could forget about the singing and bass playing in real time. I know it's been discussed many times over but you still have to stand in AWE!!! You bass players out there know what I'm talking about!!! Another thing, many if not all of these greats listed are of the jazz and/or fusion genre, a category of music that has almost no limitations. The content of there songs never has to be user friendly so they can go flying wherever they want to. I could be in a fusion band 'til I croak and be right at home. But the real challenge for me is writing SONGS, not just the same bull you hear, but creative, new songs. (like a certain band we all know and love) And for those who don't think Mark is as great as the others, consider this. Say L42 stayed an instrumental fusion band, none of them concentrating on song writing, formats, lyrics.......etc. Think how much better they would have been as players. (and they're already some of the best in the world) If that was the case, nobody and I mean NOBODY could have hung with Mark. Ok, very few could have hung with him. It would've been interesting to see who though. SOOOOO sorry that this was SOOOOO long!!! Take care, T. From: brunkle @ bigreddog.com (Brian Runkle) Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 17:41:37 -0400 One song I think the Resurgence Version should have omitted is "Don't Bother Me". "All Over You" would have been a better track selection. DBM is an alright song, but the dance quality of AOY should have outweighed DBM. The House of Usher is a story by Edgar Allen Poe. Actually titled... The Fall of the House of Usher. Very good, eerie story. The lyrics to Past Lives are very similar to the story. Imagine the lyrics being told by the main character in Poe's tale and you have the story much like Cliff Notes! Cliff Notes...Those were the funk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ------------------------------ Subject: Mail Order Problems and Guaranteed offer From: Joseph Nevin Smith Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 17:13:38 -0500 Hey, man, I'm really sorry you had a problem with ordering from someone on the digest. I have been on the digest for quite a while (lurking lately) and have never had any problems with anyone. I hope everyone on the digest is here for their love of Level 42 and to help others who are less fortunate than themselves. On that note, I will pre-offer my services. I have a laserdisc of Guaranteed Live that I will be willing to copy for anyone who wants a copy. BUT!!!! I can not do this until school is out for me. I'm band director at Kirby High School in Memphis ,TN and we don't get out until June 1ST. If you want a copy all I ask is that you send me a tape that you want it copied on. The reason I do this is because if you don't have access to the laserdisc, you probably want the tape to last a long time and I want you to decide what tape you want it on. Here is the other part of the deal. Postage anywhere in the U.S. is $3 with that priority mail. You could either send me $3 for shipping or e-mail me and we could probably find something that you have that I would like a copy of. Anyone outside of the U.S. please send however much it cost to send the tape to me. If this sounds like a good deal to anyone, send me an e-mail and we will work something out. Just so everyone knows, I won't be able to start making the tapes until after June 1st. Talk to you guys soon!! Now that's where the flaming starts ;-) because I think Romance is a brilliant song and, had it been released as a single and properly marketed, it could have been a hit! Millers' best work in my >opinion is with artists like Bryan Ferry, David Sanborn where he lays >the groove and contributes to some great songs. If there is a difference between Mark and the influential players who are so obviously echoed in some of Mark's playing is that Mark was never 'high brow'. Many high-profile players lose sight of the groove in their attempts to push the boundaries of their art. No-one taps their feet to Jaco when I play Weather Report CDs, though 'Hot Fun' is a seminal funk slap track, much of Stanley Clarke's stuff (esp. RTF stuff) is pretty awful, reminding me of a tacky 70s rock opera, and players such as Miller and Wooten are too 'tight' and clinical. For me, Mark still rules on the groove stakes - his style oozes passion and enjoyment and the human touch - almost as though his thumbwork was an involuntary reaction when 'the force is with him'. The feeling really comes through to me like no other bassist - Mark's style is honest, up-front, aggressive, percussive and utterly inspiring. >certain great in Brit Bass playing circles, the former frontman of a >mega-selling eighties jazzpop combo, is about to return solo This is more exciting than I can describe, I am in a state of great agitated anticipation and must now stop typing in order to rest a while, gather my thoughts and come to terms with this momentous news....
